Home Insurance Important Information

Important
When you take out a mortgage with Nationwide,
you’ll need to arrange some insurance too.
Your responsibilities as a mortgage holder
When you take out a mortgage, it’s your responsibility to make sure the building is properly insured and that a buildings
insurance policy is in place at the appropriate time. You have to keep a buildings insurance policy running for the life of
the mortgage, and it needs to cover the full cost of rebuilding the property, including associated professional fees and
site clearance. If the property is leasehold, the landlord may be responsible for insuring the property under the terms of
the lease.
This is when your cover should start:
• If you’re taking out a mortgage, cover should be in place from the exchange of contracts (or conclusion of missives
in Scotland), unless you are buying a brand new property, in which case it should start from the completion of the
mortgage.
• If you’re remortgaging, it should be in place from the completion of the mortgage.
If you choose to take out Nationwide buildings insurance
As you need to have buildings insurance when your Nationwide mortgage starts, if you’ve chosen to take out
Nationwide insurance make sure you tell us that you want the policy to start on completion in addition to providing full
payment details and this is when we’ll provide cover:
• If you’re taking out a mortgage, your cover will start from the exchange of contracts (or conclusion of missives in
Scotland). This won’t apply if the property is leasehold and the landlord is responsible for insuring the building in
accordance with the terms of the lease. If you’re buying a brand new property, cover will be provided from the
completion of the mortgage.
• If you’re remortgaging, cover will be in place from the completion of the mortgage,
unless you have asked us to start cover before your Nationwide mortgage completes.
If you’re taking out buildings insurance with us and you need proof of cover before your mortgage completes,
please call us on 0800 30 20 10 as soon as you know the completion date.
Additional information
• In order to complete your mortgage, you’ll need to have buildings insurance in place. This can be arranged through
Nationwide or other providers. This is not the only thing that could delay your mortgage completion, other factors
such as missing documents, e.g. waiting for salary details from your employer, or simply due to the volume of
applications being processed.
• It’s not compulsory to arrange insurance cover with Nationwide, if you’d like Nationwide to arrange your cover,
we’ll be pleased to do so. Please see over the page.
