Males: Growth spurt, voice deepens, growth of body hair, genitals grow, sweat and oil glands become more active, should broaden, muscle development, ejaculation. Hygiene: Due to increase sweat and oil production: Bath/shower, wash hands, fingernails, deodorant, skin care, hair care, shaving, teeth brushing, dandruff, and sanitary products. Reproductive body parts and functions: Worksheet: Male: Vas deferens, bladder, prostate gland, urethra, penis, testicles, scrotum, erection, sperm, nocturnal emissions. Female: Fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, ovulation, menstruation. Basic information re: reproduction – intercourse -sperm, egg, conception. Video: “What kids want to know about sex and Growing up.” From children’s program, “3-2-1 Contact: on P.B.S. T.V. Reinforces above information. Questions and discussion: Emphasis on sexual activity is adult behavior, abstain until an adult. Kids aren’t ready to be parents. Students are told “Your parents are your best sources of information about puberty and sexuality. Use these lessons as a way to talk to your parents.” Class Schedule: 5 Days, 53 minute classes; usually the last days of enrichment cycle. 1. Worksheet puberty changes. Hygiene and video. 2. This unit is based on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Curriculum Frameworks, Pre K-12 STANDARD 4: Reproduction/Sexuality. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to make effective personal decisions that promote their emotional, sexual, and reproductive health. Through the study of Development, students will (4.5) recognize the emotional and physical changes as related to the reproductive system during puberty.
