February Newsletter

As well as all of our school
activities which are on the provided calendars
and our website, we would like to remind you
of the ongoing “Help Plan Our Future”
meetings which are ongoing at various
schools throughout the district. All of these
meetings are posted on the district website
at www.cssd.ab.ca and they are opportunities
to provide input and feedback on everything
from new school naming and boundaries to
even the qualities and attributes of the
principal. Of particular interest to our school
community are the boundary scenarios for
the new SE high school in the community of
Legacy. On Monday January 30th, 2017 the
district presented 3 scenarios for discussion
and asked for public input. These scenarios
are outlined below and posted on the district
website. Please note that no decisions have been made on new school boundaries and all future
help plan our future meetings will be posted on the district website.
Questions specific to Blessed Cardinal School can be directed to school administration at 403500-2092 or via email at [email protected] . Alternatively you are always welcome
to attend our School Council meetings (next one is tonight at 7:00pm) where we provide further
information on an ongoing basis.
Thank you for all of your continued support!
MY CHILD’S LEARNING – CURRICULUM INFORMATION AT A GLANCE
Parents often ask questions about programs and curriculums. Alberta is
committed to creating an inclusive education system that inspires and
enables all students to achieve success and fulfillment as engaged thinkers
and ethical citizens, with an entrepreneurial spirit. Parents play an important
role in shaping the way their children view learning. As a parent, you
understand more than anyone else how your child learns and processes
information. This resource will provide you with a better understanding of
Alberta’s curriculum and related information for your child. This tool can help
you discover what your child is learning, how they’re assessed, and what
resources are available to help them be successful from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
School Council hosted a Teacher and Staff Appreciation Lunch on January 26th.
This lunch was well-received by the teachers and support staff. Thank you to
Tesoro Authentically Italian for catering the event. Check them out at
www.facebook.com/TesoroAuthenticallyItalian. Thank-you to the parent
volunteers who supervised the students during their lunch break. This allowed
all teachers and support staff to enjoy the lunch! Our local Davids Tea in
McKenzie Towne generously donated tea for the Appreciation Lunch. Thankyou for your community support!

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION
There are many opportunities for volunteering for spring field trips. All volunteers are required
to attend a volunteer orientation before volunteering
at the school. There will be a Volunteer Orientation
held on February 1st at 6:30 pm and on February 2nd
at 2:15 pm. These will be the last orientations offered
for this school year. To attend please RSVP to Vice

CORPORATE DONATIONS
A very special thank you to the Shell
Community Service Fund Program. They have
donated $1,000 to the Blessed Cardinal
Newman Education Society in recognition of
one of our parents’ volunteer efforts at our
school. Shell Canada believes that supporting
the communities where they operate is not
only important to their stakeholders, but also
the right thing to do as a responsible corporate citizen. We very much appreciate the efforts of
the parent who applied for this donation. If your company has programs similar to this, School
Council would be happy to help you apply for them.
FAMILY EVENT
This year’s School Council Family Event was held on
January 20th. The ‘80s-themed Family Dance Night
was a totally radical, fun-filled evening and it was
fantastic to see so many students and their families
bring back the heights of ‘80s fashion and dance
moves! Thank you to all those who attended! A huge
thank you to DJ David Hanishewski of Squiggly Sounds
DJ Services for keeping the beat going all night long!
We would also like to thank our event coordinators
Mary Rose Argonza-Oberhoffner and Leianne Turchak
and their committee for organizing this event for our
school community. We would also like to thank the
many parent and student volunteers who donated
their time towards making this a successful event.
Events like these can’t happen without help from our
volunteers, so THANK YOU!!!!!
GRADE 9 DINNER & DANCE
The dinner and dance is an optional parent-sponsored event being held on Friday June 9th at
6:00-10:00 pm at Sundance Lodge. The teachers or administration of Blessed Cardinal
Newman School do not organize this event. Parents will be needed to chaperone at the event.
Your support and interest is appreciated. If you would like to learn more about this event, please
contact Cheryl Schneider at [email protected].

SHROVE TUESDAY - February 28th
Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent. Historically,
Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to indulge yourself, and
consume perishable foods that were considered forbidden.
Pancakes are traditionally eaten on this day because they
contain, milk, butter and eggs. These items were once
considered indulgences during the Lenten period. On
Tuesday, February 28th, all students are invited to our
pancake breakfast at 8:00 am hosted in the large gym. Due
to the size of our school, this event is for students only.
Thank you for understanding.
Our Ash Wednesday Liturgy will be held on
March 1st at 1:00 pm in the large gym.
Parents are welcome to join us!
Please Note: There will be no school:
Thursday February 16th, Friday February 17th, and Monday
February 20th

PROBABILITY FAIR
On Thursday, January 20st, our grade 7 students hosted the Annual Probability Fair in the large
gym. It was a day full of math, games and problem solving. The weeks
leading up to the big event entailed the grade 7 math students
creating and building carnival games using the lessons learned in
their probability math unit. Our elementary students were then
invited to test and try their luck at the carnival. This event raised over
$900.00 which will be put towards local and global charities.

Future – A Grade 9 Guide to High School. In class, students will receive information specific to
their designated high school. Please note that Calgary Catholic School District has designated
boundaries for all high schools. It is the expectation that students will attend their designated
high school (please refer to pages 51-57 of Footprints to Your Future for specific boundary
information). High schools will be hosting Open Houses to assist in your decision-making process.

Program directly from students on a first come first served basis at the school, beginning

By March 3rd, I will require students to submit their course selection working copy, complete with
a parent signature. This will prepare us for the final online course selection to take place in
school mid-March. Although there is a lot of detail and paperwork that goes into the process of
high school registration, it can be a very exciting time to work with your children in the
development of their goals and plans.
GRADE 9 P.A.R.T.Y. PROGRAM
It is unfortunate that on January 19th, 2017 we were made aware that we are unable to bring
the P.A.R.T.Y program to our Grade 9 students this year. Over the last few months, AHS and
representatives from the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic
School District have worked together to move forward with the vision to transition the P.A.R.T.Y.
Program into a community-based program that operates in schools. They have been looking for
a new community partner and donor to take on support of the program and will continue to
explore this in 2017. Right now there is no P.A.R.T.Y Program offered by AHS. While they
continue to pursue a partnership, there are several options that offer similar programs and
resources for our students. We will be sure to let the parent community know when we find the
program that best suits the needs of our students. Thank you for your patience.

CATHOLICISM: JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD & DEEP INTO FAITH
Catholicism is a groundbreaking documentary film series with Bishop Robert Barron. Come
& rediscover your faith with other members of St. Albert the Great’s Parish community in a twopart program facilitated by Elias, [email protected] and Ann, [email protected].
Part one will begin on Monday February 6th at 6:45pm for 10 weeks at St. Albert the Great
Church. For more information and registration, please contact Elias or Ann.
FR. JULIAN’S RUBY JUBILEE (40th ANNIVERSARY OF PRIESTHOOD)
Fr. Julian Studden of St. Albert the Great Church is celebrating his 40th Anniversary of priesthood.
We would like to extend an invitation to all for his 40th Ordination Anniversary on Monday,
February 13th, 2017. The celebration will begin with a Mass at 6:30pm, followed by refreshments
and fellowship in the basement hall of St. Albert the Great Parish. All are welcome!
FIRST COMMUNION REGISTRATION
Have you had a chance to register your child for First Communion at St. Albert the Great Church?
It's not too late! Please visit the parish office as soon as possible to fill out a registration form.
When coming to register, please also bring a copy of the child's baptism certificate and the $40
registration fee, per child (if able), payable by cash or cheque. Contact Dan D’Agostino for more
information: [email protected]. Preparation will begin in March; full schedule may
be found here:

GROWTH MINDSET
Often we try to engage our child to discuss their day at school. Many times we get
one word answers, good, bad, boring, fun, or sometimes nothing at all. Instead of
asking “how was school today,” this link provides some conversation starters that
you can use with your child to get them thinking about their day and challenges from
a mindset perspective. To find more articles about mindset please visit: mindset
online.
Another great way to develop a growth mindset is through literature. The following
books are great stories that foster a growth mindset. Most are available in our
school and Calgary public library.

CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT MONTHLY NEWS

Thanking Bishop Henry for his service
As you may have heard, Bishop Fred Henry will be retiring after 19 years of service with the Calgary Catholic Diocese. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Bishop Henry for the strong
relationship and spiritual guidance he provided our district. As our leader in faith, Bishop Henry
worked collaboratively with our district on many of our faith-based events and initiatives and his
support has been invaluable. We wish Bishop Henry all the best in his retirement and we look forward to working with his successor, Bishop McGrattan. Bishop McGrattan comes to Calgary from
his previous position as Bishop of the Diocese of Peterborough. He will be installed Monday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. in a ceremony at St. Mary’s Cathedral.
