A message from Mr Arundell
The school is looking ‘greener’ by the day and we
welcomed over 30 people to school on Monday
for the Growing Devon Schools forum day where
delegates got to tour our school grounds, enjoy
talks about hedge planting, composting and
encouraging bats onto school sites. Alana and
Lara, two of our first crop of ‘little chefs’, cooked
up flapjack and a hearty soup to feed the
delegates on what was a very successful day.
Thanks to Mrs Martin, who did an incredible job
organising such a great event.
You may also have noticed that we’ve had some
work done on the school grounds over the half
term holiday with three conifer trees removed and
the front playground shelter demolished. This area
is under development and we hope to have a
raised bed going in over the next few weeks.
Thinking Day comes to school
Wednesday was ‘Thinking Day’ and we had a
great turn out of beavers, cubs, brownies and
guides. Here they all are in their fabulous uniforms!
Lost property
The mountain of lost property is growing…in fact
so much that our new ‘lost property’ cupboard,
situated in the Aviary is already full! It will be on
display next week, on Monday and Tuesday after
school in the front playground. If your child has
lost an item of clothing, please have a look. Any
remaining non uniform clothing will be taken to
the charity shop.
From Buckfastleigh to Hollywood!
We were thrilled to receive an email from ex
Buckfastleigh pupil Ian Bryce just before half term.
Ian attended our school at the same time as
Sandra, back in the late 60s before moving on to
King Edward VI School in Totnes. After leaving
school he visited America and liked it so much he
decided to move out there. He was very
fortunate to get a job working on the Star Wars
film- The Return of the Jedi. From there he went on
to produce many films including Speed (Sandra
Bullock and Keanu Reeves), Hancock (Will Smith),
the epic World War 2 movie Saving Private
Ryan(Tom Hanks), Spiderman and World War Z
and is now producer of the brilliant Transformers
movies. The picture above was taken last summer
in London, where Ian filmed parts of the latest in
the series Transformers: The Last Knight. The
children were amazed to see the picture of
Bumblebee, one of the ‘stars’ of the movies.
He wrote ‘I looked on your website this morning
and saw some lovely photos of the school and it
certainly brought back memories.
I noticed a couple of phrases “Aim high” and “Be
the best you can be”. These are simple but
important themes to keep in mind throughout life.
I have been fortunate that my journey has been
filled with hard work and a few adventures.
I am just an example of what can happen if you
study and work hard. If it happened to me it could
happen to any of your students and I wish them
all success and to always “Aim high”.
We look forward to seeing his new movie when it’s
released and hope that one day he will be able
to pay us a visit.
World Book Day Thursday 2nd
March
Children can come in costume,
dressed as a character from their
favourite book. (There is no
charge for this event.)
Jeanne will once again be
collecting the £1.00 books on behalf of the
children in exchange for their book tokens. She
will be in the Aviary on Tuesday and Wednesday
lunchtime taking orders for these books. Any child
not wanting one of the £1.00 books will get their
token on World Book Day. For a list and reviews of
the
books

We would like to thank Waterstones in Newton
Abbot for all their help with the books.
I’ve also been asked to share a
message from the town library:
‘Celebrate World Book Day straight
after school on 2 March in
Buckfastleigh Library (3-5pm). The first 17 children
through the door will get a goody bag and
everyone will get a chocolate. Tell us why you
love your favourite books and enjoy book themed
colouring and drawing.
Organised by the Friends of Buckfastleigh Library.
The Hometown Hoedown
Next Saturday there is a fabulous event taking
place in the town hall organised by a group of our
parents who are raising money for our playground
project. Tickets can be purchased in advance or
on the door. Please try to support this great event.
The Seed invites you to a celebration of Spring,
community and food, on Saturday 25th March
12:30pm – 3:00pm.
Come and have an amazing lunch at the town
hall with live music, local resident chef and free
children's entertainment. Get it in your diary now
as it will be lots of fun for all.
Garden Ground Force Work Day
Just a reminder also that next Saturday 4th March,
starting at 9am, we will be running a ground force
morning. We would like to invite as many parents
(and accompanied children) into the school to
help us with some of our garden projects. We are
looking for people to help us create a forest
school area and make our pond safe to enable
more time outside in our vegetable garden
please pop into the office and let us know if you
can help. We can offer you a bacon
sandwich and a cuppa to set you up
and a mug of soup at 1pm for anyone
who turns up to help. If you can only
spare an hour or two, please pop in,
together we can make a difference to
our school grounds.
Just a reminder we now have a
Facebook page.
