We had gotten in a fight, about this house we have always dreamt about. We couldn't
afford a move like this just yet but she just wanted to get away from her family and
wasn't listening to reason. I said she was sounding like her father, because I
thought that would snap her out of it and help her hear how crazy she was sounding.
But instead, she look off. When she didn't come back T went looking for her. I knew
where she would be, it's where she always goes to think.
When we were in high school, we weren ' t allowed to see each other, so we got to
school early and would hang out at the street behind the school. When T went looking
for her, I went there and sure enough she was there. She came over apologizing and
before I could say I was sorry ...a car whipped around the corner, I said look out! And
shoved her...the car missed her, and clipped my hip. I thought she was ok, but when I
craw led over to her...I realized she hit her head on the curb and was out.
JENSON
(Approaching cautiously)Good morning honey, how are you feeling?
JANE
I have a massive migraine. What are those?
JENSON
I just came by to bring you your favorite flowers ... the doctor told me I should show
you some stuff, to help you remember.
JANE
Who are you again?
JENSON
Jenson Dean at your service My Lady.
Salutes and bows
JANE
Well, aren't you a charmer
(smiles coyly}
JENSON
Why yes I am, Jenson's the Name, Charming's my game
JANE
(laughingly)Well Jenson Dean, you got my attention, now what's that you got there in
the bag?

Synopsis
Vietnam veteran Mike Morris is spending his golden years stuck behind a cash register hawking jewelry
at the Herington's department store. To make matters worse, his manager is the obnoxious J.R.
Herington, heir to the family fortune. Amidst the chaos of Black Friday, J .R. avariciously plans on
pulling an inside job at the jewelry department in which Mike is the fall guy. But things don 't exactly
work out as planned.
Characters
Mike Morris: Age 64. A former sniper during the Vietnam War and current jewelry salesman at
Herington's. He' s not happy to be taking a low wage job near retirement age, but he puts in his
best regardless of his feelings. He resents being subservient to J.R., and the two clash- at least,
they go as far as Mike is willing to push his luck.
J .R. Herington: Age 18. The son of Jim Herington, the CEO of an upscale department store to
which J.R. is the heir apparent. Nearing the end of his time in high school and the beginning of
his stint in college, he wants his adolescence to go out with a bang. There' s just one problem:
his dad has recently taken away his allowance and made him work as a 2"d story floor manager at
the local Herington' s. He now makes minimum wage and can no longer satisfy his expensive
tastes.
Chase Kuo: Age 18. J.R.'s best friend. He knows that he and J.R. will likely not be seeing each
other after they ship off for separate colleges, so he' s hatched a plan for them to acquire the
money they' ll need for their expensive romp.
Jim Herington: Age 44. The patriarch of the Herington family. Though he's often miffed at
J.R. ' s antics, he is genuinely proud of him for taking the job and believes he is teaching him a
lesson in responsibility. Spoiler alert: he isn 't.
Amy Kaplan: Age 36. A detective for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department assigned to the
Herington' s theft.
Blonde Customer: Age 27. A young woman who has chosen to buy a watch at Herington' s,
much to her misfortune.
Elderly Woman: Age 63. A mysterious senior citizen who is conducting a late night shopping
spree at Herington' s.
Monologue (Black Friday)
Well, for starters, don't short us three hundred bucks! I know you wanted to make a sale, but
come on. For Christ's sake, you had the bitch in the bag. If she wanted something cheaper, find
it; you don't open the door to something cheaper. There are some things you simply don' t do as
a salesman. Michael, listen. I know you don't want to do this job, alright? I understand this
probably isn't where you envisaged yourself thirty, forty , fifty years ago. I understand that. But
please, don't let your feelings come between you and your paycheck. If James does something
that really impacts things- impacts the business- we can talk. Until then, all I can say is .. .learn
to live with it. Are we clear?
Dialogue (Black Friday)
MIKE
Mr. I lerington, I'm not one to cause trouble. You know me.
JIM
(JIM shifts hi s focus to MIKE's nametag rather than his face.)
Of course, Michael.
MIKE
But I find it difficult to work in an environment like this with somebody like him. I don ' t mean
to impugn your skills as a father-don't take this the wrong way. But I feel like J.R., James- he
acts like he runs the place.
JIM
In my absence, he pretty much does. That's why I hired him; I can't be at every location at once.
MIKE
I don't mean "run the place" in the sense that, say, he's managerial. I mean, he's obviously
entitled. Just the other day he pushed over Tuco 's bucket and kicked me out of my station,
forced me to clean it up.
JIM
Well , wh 1 did James do that?
MIKE
Because he was angry that I tried to pitch a woman a three hundred dollar Seiko over a six
hundred dollar lnvicta.
JIM
(Laughs heartily)
Oh my god. That's actually pretty funny. Oh, god. Sounds like me when I young.
MIKE
You don't think there's anything wrong with that?
JIM
It' s a little excessive I' ll admit- a bit of youthful excess, if you want to put it that way. But I
didn't know the kid had such gusto. I mean , I was worried he was going to half-ass the job or
something. Hell , maybe you could learn a thing or two from him.
Aftermath
Written by
Zerina Ramirez
Synopsis: Two detectives investigate a suspect after a murder, but not all is as it first appears to
be. Truth, bravery, and sacrifice will earn the ultimate rewards to the most deserving.
Character descriptions:
Suspect- He or She is a young adult, 21-23, with a very traumatic and rough childhood. A lot of
their time in grade school was missed, and a result, they are not very social. Their father was a
monster who was sent to prison for domestic and child abuse when the Suspect was roughly, 811 years old. They are very close to their mother and sister, and the suspect puts them before
anyone or anything else. The suspect has a very submissive and defeated air to them, watching
their mother and sister take beatings to protect them has made them feel worthless. The suspect
has a small handful of friends, but most of their time together is spent getting drunk.
Detective Mal- He or She has very strong sense of compassion, and integrity. Mal works hard, to
rise up in ranks despite how poorly their superiors treat them. Mal spends their life trying to
correct a mistake once made, in hopes of being deemed worthy enough of a new and better life.
Mal's overall character is kind, and sincere, but injustice moves Mal to speak up to it, knowing
very well it could be the end to their climb to the top. Age does not matter.
Detective Bonum: He or She is a cocky, condescending, short and vain. Bomun believes that
their way is best. Being "born" with a golden spoon in their mouth has lead them to forget that
even the top dogs can fall behind the pack if they forget their place, to which Bonum has. Age
does not matter.
Detective Mal: Hello, My name is detective Mal, I've been assigned to your case. I understand
the last few hours have been very ... chaotic, but I can promise you that I'm here to help sort
things out, I just need you to be very honest with me okay?
Suspect: (stares in a gaze and unresponsive)
Detective Mal: Look kid, the only way this is going to work is if you cooperate, these next few
hours with us will determine what happens to you next, and it's very important that you just tell
the truth. Can you do that for me?
Suspect: (Nods in agreement) Yeah, I can do that.
Detective Mal: Good, my partner should be here soon, has anyone offered you anything to eat or
drink yet?
Suspect: No, but I'm fine.
Detective Mal: You'll be here awhile, let me know if that changes okay? (smiles, just then
Detective Bomun enters from the right)
Detective Bonum: (to Detective Mal) Sorry I'm late, the chief wanted to brief me first hand on
the case. (To the suspect) I'm detective Bonum, I'd like to make this short and quick okay? So
here's how this is going to go ... I'm going to ask you questions and you're going to answer
them, got it?
Suspect: Okay ...
Detective Bonum: Great, let's start with how much did you have to drink tonight?
Suspect: I'm not really sure, 5 maybe 6 beers?
Detective Bonum: How long after your last beer did you decide it was a good idea to drive
home?
Suspect: Uh ... maybe 20 minutes later? My sister. ..
Detective Bonum: 20 minutes later?! Not the brightest are you?
Detective Mal: (coughs and glares at Detective Bonum) You were saying ... Your sister what?
Suspect: (not noticing the tension between them) She called me, and I thought I heard her crying
then hang up which isn't normal for her . .. I tried to call her back and she wouldn't answer so, I
got in my car and I drove home to check on her ...
Detective Bonum: Let me get this straight, you drove intoxicated because your sister was crying?
Suspect: That's what I just said ... I was only 15 minutes away from home, and I made it there
just fine okay? Why does that even matter? That's not why I'm here and you know that.
Suspect: I saw my dad's car, so I ran to backyard and grabbed my moms hunting rifle from the
shed. Our back door to the house was left open, so I snuck in and looked for my sister. I could
hear pacing and rummaging up stairs, I though it was her so I started to run up there when I saw
her ... She was laying on the floor, bleeding, there was blood all over her face, I called 911 for an
ambulance, but he must have heard me because he came flying down the stairs ... the rest
happened so fast I just. .. don't know! He pushed me, tried to get a hold of the rifle, he said he
was going to kill both of us ... and then wait for my mom to get home and kill her too, and before
I knew it all the memories, of the beatings they took to protect me as kid just came flooding in,
and I knew, that I couldn't let him ever hurt either of them again, I owed them, I was bigger this
time, and stronger, and I just, I couldn't let him hurt them, then the gun went off. .. and the rest
really is a blur. I heard sirens, the paramedics came, then the police took care of the rest, I was
taken away . .. and ... I mean I couldn't have had that much to drink ... but now that I thfok about
it, I don' t remember how I got here . ..

All this time I’ve been blaming you, but it’s been nobody’s fault but mine. Every time you leave

Oh Yeah. I have to brush and floss after every meal. Kids at school used to make fun of me
because I always had a packa floss in my pocket. But whenever they had something stuck in their

RHIANNON
Do you expect me to not see other people? You certainly are.
ERIC
Is that what this is? You’re trying to get back at me? You know how hard this is for me and
you’re throwing it in my face?
RHIANNON
You would think this is about you. Have you ever thought about how hard this is for me? Never
knowing when I’ll see you next, wondering if we will ever go on an actual date, the constant
reminder that I’m second best. I haven’t even seen you in weeks and you just show up at my
doorstep and start judging me? How can you be such a hypocrite?
ERIC
A hypocrite? I actually care about you. Meanwhile you’re hooking up with random strangers just
to spite me!
(Beat.)
RHIANNON
Do you really care? Or are you just afraid of being alone?
(Beat.)
ERIC
You know I do. You know that it’s complicated. Why are you asking me these questions all of a
sudden?
RHIANNON
All of a sudden? Its been almost three years! Did you think I was just going to always be here,
waiting for you to make up your mind?
It’s a simple choice, Eric: me or her. I can’t do this anymore.
(Beat.)
(ERIC looks away.)
RHIANNON
You tell me “I’m perfect”. I’m “simple and sweet”.
But that’s not what you want. That’s not what anyone wants, even if they think they do.
People want complicated and messy, because messy feels real and genuine.
Simple is…boring. Admit it, I’m boring. And that’s why you never stay.

be more than it actually is. The type to help someone in need, and
ask for their number afterwards.
FAE
No, I mean, it’s what we’re all thinking, right? Avery’s gonna go off to
University, we’re gonna be stuck here, and nothing’s gonna be the same
ever again. No more blanket forts, no more stories, no more anything
because we won’t be together. We’ll just be names in the back of each
other’s minds. Maybe we’ll sit together at our 20 year high school
reunion. Maybe we’ll try to keep in touch for a year, maybe even two,
but then things will change again, and we’ll get busy, and we won’t talk.
We won’t even be friends.
FAE
The floor... it’s covered in lava! (Pause) Um, you should be way more concerned right now.
SAM
Dude, the floor is LAVA.
AVERY
I am not building this thing alone.
SAM
We must save the king! He doesn’t even know the terrible death that’s coming for him!
AVERY
I’m going to call your mothersFAE
Oh my gosh, Sam.. Is that..
AVERY
I swear to god, you twoSAM
No... it can’t be!
AVERY
Guys!
FAE AND SAM
LAVA MONSTER!!!
SAM
Bro... You gotta do the thing.
AVERY
You do it.
SAM
But... it’s your thing.
After a slight pause and a sigh, AVERY changes to be the lava monster and roars mightily
FAE
It’s overtaken the king! We’re the nation’s last hope! CHAAAAAARGE!

Pear Blossom Garden Monologue
Larry
The power to turn heads. The power that makes you want to look at
them. (Pause) I saw this woman once when I was workin’ on my car, and
she was coming up the street. She sauntered with a confidence that
amazed me. I wanted to look. There was some kinda power to her. She
wore this low cut blouse with her boobs just giggling slightly as she
walked, she knocked me out. She was beautiful and she knew it. (Pause) I
refused to look at her as she passed. Just kept working on the car. Tried
to make her think I didn’t care. But I did. (Pause) I wouldn’t give her the
satisfaction. (Pause) I knew she wanted me to look.
Pear Blossom Garden Dialogue
Bill (puzzled)
I thought you needed my help with something? I don’t have a lot of time right
now. I gotta get goin’ to work. (Looks at his watch) But I’ll do what I can.
Ginny (sweetly)
This won’t take long Billy, I have these two situations, one immediate and the other
long term.
Bill is intoxicated with amour.
Bill (playful)
Let’s look at the short term project first.
Ginny (playful)
I think we should examine the long term issue. Then we can take our time and
enjoy the short term issue.
Billy (confused)
I don’t understand.
Ginny (sweetly)
You will. (Pause) (Serious) the long term issue is Frank. We can’t keep going on like
this. All he does is sits around all day playing video games. The house is always a
mess. He isn’t helping out (pause) and I’ll tell ya something else, even the sex is
suffering. He’s just isn’t into it sometimes and he’d never been like that before.
(Pause) and, I have to move on.
