ESU FOR KIDS 2016 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS All courses are available for enrollment up to TUESDAY, MAY 31, 2016. Scroll below to see each time slot, how many courses are offered during it, and what each course is about. 8:00-9:00 a.m. courses (6 offered) • (A1) Art, Art, and More Art (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Jessica Massee NEW!!! Explore arts and crafts using different materials, including paint, tie dying, and Paper Mache. You will be able to create masterpieces and lasting experiences! • (A2) Beginner Tennis (ages 7-11) - Instructor: Stacey Brescancine 3rd YEAR OFFERED!!! This course is geared for kids who have never picked up a racket before! They will first learn the rules of the game in addition to the numerous tennis moves used to ace opponents. By the end of the course, kids will be able to play full tennis matches! Requirement: your own tennis racket and water bottle • (A3) Creative Writing (ages 8-14) - Instructor: Carlin Todd NEW!!! Do you love to write? Come to Creative Writing, where you will be given your own personal journal! You will be given hilarious writing prompts, play fun writing games with friends, and you’ll even write your own storybook! Join us and bring your creative writing skills with you. • (A4) Doodling is Good for Your Brain (ages 12-18) - Instructor: Heide Molinaro NEW!!! Studies have shown that doodling is GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN! “Applied visual thinking” (doodling) increases information retention, creativity, and attention span. Most of our Presidents have been doodlers, as well as Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. In this course we will make a variety of fun and fabulous Doodled Works of Art taught by a professional art teacher. Come test your powers of perception and deduction as you twist and turn your way through the mountain passes, dark alleys, asteroid belts and underground ant tunnels of Amazing Mazes! Try to beat your classmates as you race through real 3-D Labyrinths designed and built by YOU in this creative and fun course taught by a professional art teacher. • (B2) The Animals in Your Backyard (ages 6-12) - Instructor: Carlin Todd NEW!!! Come explore the diverse animals that are living in your own backyard! Learn about their habitats, how they live, and create art for each animal you learn about. We’ll even get hands on with some turtle shells, animal pelts, deer antler, and more! • (B3) Beginner Guitar (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Dave Libecap 14th YEAR OFFERED! Have you ever wanted to learn guitar? This course starts with the basics – chords, scales, fingering, & tuning. By the end, you’ll learn how to play simple guitar songs! We will make butterfly crafts, explore what butterflies eat, where they travel, and more! • (B5) Comic Book Villains Role Play (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Scott Hnasko NEW!!! Work with the instructor to choose a comic book villain you’d like to be – Green Goblin, Joker, Reverse Flash, Catwoman...you could be from Marvel, DC, or any other comic universe. From there, you’ll work together with classmates to problem solve and go on exciting role play adventure • (B6) Crafty Gift Making (ages 10-16) - Instructor: Christina Abel NEW!!! Bookmarks! Magnets! Picture holders! Beaded pens! Decorative pins! You’ll design and create all these and more! Your friends and family will love the gifts you make…if you don’t keep them all for yourself!!! • (B7) Intermediate Field Hockey (ages 8-14) - Instructor: Becca Perri NEW! The game of field hockey is fun-filled, action-packed and a great confidence builder. You will learn skills, be active, make new friends and have a blast! Prerequisite: Prior field hockey experience. Requirements: Shin guards, cleats and/or sneakers, water bottle, mouth guard • (B8) Intermediate Tennis (ages 9-18) - Instructor: Stacey Brescancine NEW!!! Intermediate tennis will allow students to become better tennis players! More intense drills and more tennis shots will be taught. Prerequisite: Beginner Tennis or related tennis experience. Requirement: your own tennis racket and water bottle • (B9) Pixar Pictures (ages 8-14) – Instructor: Brittany Moloughney In this class we will get inspired by the popular Disney's Pixar movies to create works of art. This class will go "INSIDE OUT” by recreating the characters of these famous films. 3 The children will get to create and show off which INCREDIBLE superhero they want to be and perhaps stumble upon some funny MONSTERS along the way. One thing is for certain, there is no limit on where this journey will take us, but we hope it will go "TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!" 9:10-10:10 a.m. courses (10 offered) -- continued • (B10) Track and Field (ages 10-18) - Instructor: Maury Molin NEW!!! Get ready to sprint 40 meters…then up to 100 meters. You’ll use shot puts (baseballs) and long jump skills. Stretch and run your way to a healthy workout each day on the ESU track! Requirements: Sneakers, water bottle 10:20-11:20 a.m. courses (11 offered) • (C1) 3-D Design and Printing Workshop (ages 14-18) - Instructor: Jocelyn Kolb-DeWitt NEW!!! This ESU for Kids course will introduce students to Adobe Illustrator and Rhinoceros 3d design software. Students will get to experiment with laser cutting and 3-D printing to produce functional design objects like rubber stamps and keychains. No prior experience is necessary, just an interest in art, design or technology! • (C2) Advanced Tennis (ages 10-18) - Instructor: Stacey Brescancine NEW!!! Advanced Tennis is designed for students who want to take their skills and experiences to the next level! With your hard work and guidance from a patient instructor, ESU could be your gateway to Wimbledon! Prerequisite: Beginner Tennis or related tennis experience. Requirement: your own tennis racket and water bottle • (C3) Caribbean Cooking (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Trishana Thomas NEW!!! This is a fun and exciting class where students will journey to the Caribbean by exploring its flavors. Kids and young adults will learn about nutrition and basic kitchen skills while creating Caribbean treats, and working on projects such as TV food commercials, and magazine cookbooks. You’ll make rasta pasta, fritters, island smoothies and more! • (C4) Crayon Creations (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Heide Molinaro 4 NEW!!! Crayons aren’t just for coloring in this fun and exciting course! We will be shaving, melting gluing, painting…all with crayons! We will even be creating art using the crayon wrappers! We are taking art to a whole new level! You will create beautiful pieces of art with nothing but items from nature. You’ll be ditching the paint, because in this course, we use mud! This course will help bring out the natural artist in you. • (C6) Disney Comes to Life (ages 8-14) - Instructor: Brittany Moloughney NEW!!! This is an arts and crafts class dedicated to all things Disney. Put on your mouse ears as we explore the heartwarming themes of popular Disney movies and create art based on those movies. Can you just not wait to be king? Let start off by creating your perfect crown or tiara for the occasion! Not all stories begin with "Once Upon a Time," but this course will definitely live "Happily Ever After." • (C7) Have a Ball Reading! (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Jessica Massee Don’t fall behind! Practice your reading skills with fun games with us this summer! We will play balloon toss, twister, soccer, bowling, and even fishing while we work on our reading skills! Run around, have fun, and read! • (C8) Marvel and DC Comics Card Game Adventures (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Scott Hnasko NEW!!! Explore the exciting worlds of DC and Marvel Comics as you play strategy card games that are both cooperative AND competitive! Guide your heroes to victory against some of their greatest foes. Save innocent bystanders as you learn about heroes and villains you never knew before! • (C9) Pirates Roleplay (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Dave Libecap 2nd YEAR OFFERED!!! Set sail for adventure and treasure on the high seas. This roleplaying class will put you on a pirate ship with a crew of pirates just like you. You’ll have swashbuckling excitement each day! This is an introductory course to expose children to the Spanish language and culture. Students will experience language through songs, rhymes, bingo games, and a variety of hands on activities. 10:20-11:20 a.m. courses (11 offered) – continued • (C11) The Zoologist in You 2 (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Becca Perri NEW!!! This course is the sequel you demanded to last summer’s popular course! In this class, you will become a zoologist and learn about some of the most interesting and wild animals in the world! We’ll write in our Animal Logs and make animal crafts! We’ll conduct experiments to learn about the animals! 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. courses (10 offered) • (D1) Beginner Piano (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Dave Libecap This basic course will show you how you to play piano. You’ll start with harmony, fingering, scales, and rhythm. You’ll read music. You’ll play simple songs for friends! Equipment requirement: You must bring your own Piano Keyboard each day, which we can store for you if you choose to take other classes during the day. • (D2) Beginner Soccer (ages 6-9) - Instructor: Stacey Brescancine NEW!!! Children will learn the various soccer techniques in a friendly environment. They will understand scoring and various positions so they can play with family and friends. Equipment requirement: a filled-up water bottle and shin guards are needed each day. • (D3) Eye-Poppin’ Art (ages 12-18) - Instructor: Heide Molinaro NEW!!! Do you like Bright Colors and Shiny Objects? Do you enjoy Fun Shapes and Big, Bold Designs? Then this is the Art Class for you! In this course, taught by a professional art teacher, you will create your own eye-popping paintings, posters, drawings and sculptures in the Pop Art Style. 6 • (D4) Home and Community Class (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Trishana Thomas NEW!!! Students will become well-rounded individuals and grow more helpful around the house as well as on a broader scale. Students will improve on manners, housekeeping skills, basic sewing skills, and will learn to work together creating outreach projects for those who are in need. 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. courses (10 offered) • (D5) Learn to be a Master Chef (ages 10-18) - Instructor: Becca Perri NEW!!! Do you love food? Do you love to eat? Do you love to cook? If you said, "Yes!" to any or all three, then, this is the class for you! Learn to cook just like a chef! In this class, you will learn all the techniques and basics a chef has to know to cook meals that will "WOW!" their guests! Don’t go through summer without keeping up with your reading skills – come read with us! • (D7) Math Games Extravaganza (ages 10-14) - Instructor: Jessica Massee Keep your math skills strong this summer. This class combines math practice with motivating games for a fun educational experience. Are you interested in learning how to create healthier eating habits? In this course, you will learn how to create delicious and nutritious snacks that you will actually taste on a daily basis. Discover the difference between organic and nonorganic food. Learn what happens to your body based on the things you choose to eat. For the artist, there’s hardly anything more basic than PAPER. In this course, taught by a professional art teacher, we will be using paper, and ONLY paper to create a whole variety of amazing kinds of art! Working two and three dimensionally, we will cut, tear, fold, curl and collage paper into animals, buildings, trees and even lit disco-balls! You will learn how to talk to other by using your hands. At the end of this course, you will be able to teach your friends and family how to sign things such as basic needs, food, feelings, actions, the alphabet, and more! 3:00-4:00 p.m. courses (8 courses offered) • (G3) Chess for All Ages and Abilities (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Scott Hnasko 17th YEAR OFFERED! Sharpen your logic & broaden your mind! Whether you’ve played chess before or you’re just a beginner, Chess for All Ages covers chess basics and challenges experienced players.
