Kokanee Salmon: Something’s Fishy (Preschool-Grade 12)
Offered September to early October only.
Students will learn about the many challenges Kokanee face at every stage of their life cycle; the
Kokanee’s place in the food web; why they swim upstream to spawn; and the role they play in the
Okanagan ecosystem. Offered at Mission Creek or Hardy Falls.
Walking Nature’s Way (Preschool-Grade 12) Offered year round.
Each Regional Park is made up of many different ecosystems. Students will go on a guided
nature walk and learn about the ecosystems in the chosen park. They will learn about important
plant and animal species in the unique Okanagan ecosystems.
The Power of Habitat (Grades 2-12) Offered year round.

Owls of the Okanagan (Kindergarten-Grade 4)
Did you know that 12 species of owls call the Okanagan home? Students will learn about
Okanagan owl species, how owls differ from other birds and what owls have in common with other
birds of prey. Optional owl pellet dissection available at $2 per pellet.
Tadpole Tales (Preschool-Grade 1)
Little ones love this fun and interactive story time! Nature-themed stories and songs are followed
by a craft and/or nature walk. Available themes include Caterpillars & Butterflies, Animals in the
Park, and Tadpoles, Toads & Frogs.

Food. Water. Shelter. Space. Four essential components that every animal needs to survive in its
home, or habitat. Students will identify some North American animals, including predator and
prey animals, carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. Classroom activities explore ideas around
food webs/ food chains and how animals adapt to habitat change and loss.

Bears (Grades 2-12)
Pond Study (Preschool-Grade 12) Offered April to October.
Bears call many of our Regional Parks home. Learn about the black bear’s life cycle, its
behaviours and characteristics, as well as its place in the Okanagan ecosystem.
Explore the depths of Regional Park ponds at either Mission Creek, Kaloya or Shannon Lake.
What is a pond? What types of vertebrates and invertebrates live in and around a pond
ecosystem? What determines a healthy pond?
A Look Back at Gellatly Nut Farm (Preschool-Grade 12)
Offered year round but best in the fall.
Students will tour heritage buildings and examine how life a century ago was different from, or
similar to, life today and how the Gellatly family lived on and farmed the land. The tour then
heads into the heritage nut orchard for a closer look at nut varieties and how nuts are useful to
humans and animals.
What’s the Buzz? (Preschool-Grade 12) Offered April to October.
Bees play an important role in the production of the food we eat. Through exploration of the food
forest at the EECO, students will learn about the process of pollination and the role of bees and
other pollinating insects. Students will also observe a beehive and learn the bee roles within the
colony. Program offered at Mission Creek Regional Park only.
