Divide the class into groups of four. Pass out two Recipe Problems sheets to
each group. Challenge each group to solve the recipe problems on the activity
sheet. They may use the measuring cups, plastic pitchers and water to help
solve the problems. The following are the answers to each problem:
1. They fill the 2/3 cup a total of 6 times to make 4 cups
2. They fill the 1/2 cup a total of 6 times and the 1/3 cup twice
3. 16 1/4 cups
4. They fill the 3/4 cup 4 times to make 3 cups
5. 1 1/2 + 3/4 + 2 3/4 = 5 cups
6. Drink 2/3 cup a day

1. You are making Tang and you only have a 2/3 cup measuring cup. How
many times must you fill this measuring cup to obtain the required 4 cups of
water?
2. You only have a 1/2 measuring cup and a 1/3 measuring cup and you need
3 2/3 cups of flour. How many times must you fill up each of the cups?
3. You have 4 cups of yogurt, each one of your friends gets 1/4 cup. How
many friends can you share with?
4. You only have a 3/4 measuring cup. How many times must you fill this
measuring cup to obtain the 3 cups of water needed for the Kool-Aid?
5. You want to make a punch mix that uses 1 1/2 cups of apple juice, 3/4 cups
orange juice and 2 3/4 cups of ginger ale. You have a container that holds
5 cups… will this be large enough for the punch?
6. You love root beer. You buy yourself a bottle that holds 3 1/3 cups of
root beer. Wanting it to last as long as possible, you decide to drink only
part of the root beer over the next 5 days. Assuming you drink the same
amount each day, how much root beer will you drink on each of those 5
days?
