Our Parish Lenten Journey
Resurrection Two Year Old Program
Fr. Robert Barron tells us that “the better we
understand Jesus, the better we
understand ourselves!”
He
believes that in using biblical
insights and engaging stories, we
will see Jesus most clearly
through the lens of the Old
Testament. Please join us as we
journey together with Fr. Barron’s Six Session
Study Program called, “PRIEST, PROPHET,
KING”. Each session there will be a twenty minute
DVD presentation followed by a discussion.
For your convenience, the same sessions will be
offered twice, in the morning (9:30AM) as well as
in
the
evening
(7:30PM), in the
Lower Church Hall’s
Nielsen Room. Sr.
Danielle will be
facilitating these meetings.
There are some spaces in our Two Year Old
Program for September
2015.
Our Twos
Program offers children
a gentle introduction to
nursery school. Classes
meet two or three times
a week. There are eight
children in each class with two teachers. The
children have an opportunity to socialize, learn to
share and to separate from parents and care givers.
They play with each other, listen to stories, sing
songs, create art and play outside. We are happy to
arrange a tour of our new facility. If you have any
questions
please

us

Votive Candles
Lighting Candles in Church to remember a loved
one or for a special intention is
a long time noble practice.
Our parish is considering
converting to real votive
candles produced by St.
Killian’s Candle Company,
Tipperary, Ireland.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral
converted to St. Killian’s votive candles a few years
ago. These new candles will possibly replace our
antiquated 25-year-old–push-button candles. They
are smoke free, eco-friendly, clean, safe and with no
soot damage. We have installed one new stand on
a-trial-basis in Our Lady’s Chapel. We invite you to
take a look at it and would appreciate your
comments and feedback. We will decide after
Easter if we will fully convert to these real candles.
Thank you.

Q and A:
What’s the purpose of Lent?
You can begin by understanding Lent’s purpose and
the Church’s requirements. Lent is the 40-day
penitential period to prepare our hearts to celebrate
the solemnity of Easter Sunday and the entire 50day season of Easter. It is modeled after the 40
days that Jesus spent in the desert preparing for His
public ministry. The Spanish word for Lent,
Cuaresma, means 40th. Our English word “Lent”
originally meant spring. The root for this word
means “long,” because the days lengthen during the
spring. As we emerge from the darkness of winter
and nature begins to blossom, our thoughts turn
toward
new
life.
We are called to
prepare our hearts for
Easter by prayer, fasting,
and almsgiving. On Ash
Wednesday,
the
beginning of Lent, we
are admonished to turn away from sin and to be
faithful to the Gospel. Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday are days of fasting and abstinence. Those
over the age of 14 must abstain from eating meat on
Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, as well as
on the other Fridays of the year. (In the United
States, outside of the season of Lent, another
sacrifice may be substituted for abstinence from
meat on Fridays.) Since Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday are also fast days, those from ages of 18-59
are required to eat less; one meal and two smaller
meals that, taken together
are not more than one main
meal. These are the things
that the Church requires of
us during Lent.
The Church also
recommends; confessing
our sins, praying more (for
example, attending daily
Mass and praying the Stations of the Cross on
Fridays), as well as making sacrifices or giving
something up during Lent. In fact, giving the
money saved through such sacrifices to the poor is a
beautiful way to practice almsgiving, which purifies
our hearts and makes atonement for our sins.
To sum up, what Christ desires most of us
during Lent is a contrite and humble heart, open
to His mercy.
Lent Family Calendar
Sunday, February 22
After Mass today, explain
the Gospel and the homily
in terms your children can
understand and relate.
Monday, February 23
Collect stuffed animals or
soft pillows, in good
condition, and donate
them to a local pre-school
or orphanage.
Tuesday, February 24
Invent a new family
prayer that you can say
together each day.
Wednesday, February 25
Take stock of how your
Lenten fasts are going,
and
refresh
your
commitment to them.
Thursday, February 26
Before eating your family
meal together, ask each
person
to
say
a
spontaneous prayer.
Friday, February 27
Abstain from eating meat.
Pray for the people in the
word who can’t afford to
have meat as a regular
part of their diets.
Saturday, February 28
Turn off the television,
unplug the computers,
and take the phone off the
hook for a half hour to
pray a family Rosary.
Help children make age-appropriate choices of
what to give up for Lent so that they stick with
their fast for the entire season.
