TB1-Butyl-Rubber-Strip-Sealants

Metal Faced Insulated Roof &
Wall Cladding Panels for

TECHNICAL BULLETIN 1
Title: Butyl Rubber Strip Sealants.
Date: 30 September 2004
In the past our Model Specifications and literature have made reference to a single
recommended sealant supplier i.e. Scapa Tapes Ref: 0311 or similar.
With recent issues on approvals/certification etc, we have now decided that in the future
our recommendation for the butyl rubber sealants will be based on a minimum performance
specification of Class A.
The NFRC (The National Federation Of Roofing Contractors Limited) published a
Technical Bulletin No.36, titled “Performance standards for butyl strip sealants in metal clad
buildings”, in June 2003.
The aim of this Technical Bulletin No.36 was to introduce a new performance classification
for butyl rubber strip sealants, which covers both “minimum performance” (Class B) and “
Higher performance” (Class A).
To enable butyl strip sealants to be classified as category A or B, a series of test methods
have been devised and also a minimum pass criteria for each of these test methods.
The tests for the standard are: 1. Adhesion before and after accelerated ageing.
2. Resistance to slump and creep.
3. Water Resistance.
4. Force to compress by 20%.
5. Shear strength before and after accelerated ageing.
Please find enclosed a copy of the NFRC Technical Bulletin No.36, which has a summary
of the tests and also the pass-fail criteria for further reading.

As a result of the above, all new specifications issued by the Technical Design Bureau will
incorporate these revised changes and also all new literature published in the future will be
amended accordingly.
Typical extract example of changes: Our current Model Specification for the KS1000RW Roof Panel reads as follows: SEALS & FILLERS
-------------------------Side Lap
All external side laps to be weather sealed along the full length by an unbroken bead of 6x5mm
butyl rubber sealant tape, Scapa Tapes ref:0311 or similar.
End Lap
All external end laps to be 150mm long, and weather sealed along the full width using three
unbroken runs of 6 x 5mm butyl rubber sealant tape, Scapa Tapes ref:0311 or similar.
Our new Model Specification for the KS1000RW Roof Panel will read as follows: SEALS & FILLERS
-------------------------Side Lap
All external side laps to be weather sealed along the full length by an unbroken bead of 6 x 5mm
butyl rubber sealant tape Class A, ref: NFRC TB 36.
End Lap
All external end laps to be 150mm long, and weather sealed along the full width using three
unbroken runs of 6 x 5mm butyl rubber sealant tape Class A, ref: NFRC TB 36.
We ask that you will inform our customers of these changes and should you require further
copies of this Technical Bulletin 1, please contact the Technical Design Bureau.
Should you have any queries on the above or require further information, please do not hesitate
