Cut your risk for heart disease.
Know your blood pressure and blood cholesterol. Keep
track of your progress!
What Your Blood Pressure Numbers Mean
A blood pressure of 140/90 or higher is considered high blood
pressure. Both numbers are important! If one or both numbers
are usually high, you have high blood pressure. If you are
being treated for high blood pressure, you still have high blood
pressure even if you have repeated readings in the normal
range.

Blood Pressure Level
When systolic and diastolic blood pressures fall into different
categories, the higher category should be used to classify
blood pressure level. For example, 160/80 would be stage 2
high blood pressure.
What Your Cholesterol Numbers Mean
Healthy Adults, age 20 and older, should see their doctor for a
complete fasting cholesterol test (lipoprotein analysis) every
five years. Your doctor will determine your individual risk
goals.

My Blood Pressure Diary
Because blood pressure varies throughout the day, your “usual
blood pressure” is a range rather than a specific number. Your
“usual blood pressure” is actually an average of several
readings taken over a period of several weeks.

Scoring 10 or more points
You are at high risk for having diabetes. Only your
health care provider can check to see if you have diabetes. See
yours soon and find out for sure.
Scoring 3-9 points
You are probably at low risk for having diabetes now.
But don’t just forget about it. Keep your risk low by losing
weight if you are overweight, being active most days, and eating
low fat meals that are high in fruits and vegetables, and whole
grain foods.

What is Stroke?
Everyone has some risk for stroke. Many risk factors are
preventable or can be controlled. But a few stroke risk factors are
beyond your control.
Risk Factors for stroke:
Increasing age - People over age 55 are at greater risk of a stroke.
Gender - More men than women have strokes in certain age groups,
but more women actually die from stroke.
Race - African-Americans and Hispanics have a higher risk of death
and disability from stroke.
Diabetes - If you are diabetic, follow your doctor's recommendations.
Heredity - A family history of stroke can increase your risk.
Previous Stroke - History of a previous stroke may increase stroke
risk by up to 10 times.
Previous episode of Transient Ischemic Attack or TIA ("mini-stroke")
High cholesterol
High Blood Pressure (hypertension)
Heart Disease
Atrial Fibrillation and Carotid Artery Disease - An abnormal heart
rate or rhythm. This type of irregular heartbeat occurs for 15
percent of all strokes.
If you have one of these risk factors, it is even more important that
you learn about the lifestyle changes you can make to prevent a
stroke.
Lifestyle risk factors for stroke include:
Smoking, Overweight or obesity. Physical inactivity, Heavy
drinking, and Excessive stress
You can control these lifestyle risk factors by quitting smoking,
exercising regularly, watching what and how much you eat, and
limiting alcohol consumption.
