Sewing Machine Elias Howe’s invention of the sewing machine helped people everywhere sew faster. Machines like this had already been invented, but Howe’s really got the job done. After Elias Howe invented it in Massachusetts and then he patented the sewing machine in 1846, he encountered major problems marketing his machine and defending his patent. So, Mr. Howe took the next nines years trying to have people show interest in his invention and then trying to protect his patent. He finally succeeded, but the sewing machine didn’t go into mass production until the 1850’s when Isaac Singer produced the successful one. Sewing machines still help us get jobs done quickly today in the 21st century. Check out these other great exhibits about the Civil War!
