FARM ANIMAL DISPLAY WAYNE HOWELL, Superintendent – 472-6955 / 529-7093 (cell) The Farm Animal Exhibit has developed into our most popular agriculture exhibit at the fair. It is open to all ages and everyone is invited to participate. This is a fun or hobby exhibit of a variety of farm type animals. There is no judging or competition. All animals must be in good health and condition. All horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules on exhibit must have a current health certificate showing they are negative to equine infectious anemia. The fair provides guards around the clock, pens and cages for the animals, and attendants to feed, water and clean up. However, exhibitors are encouraged to help take care of the animals as you visit the fair. Each qualified exhibitor will receive a week-long pass good for two (2) admissions daily. Absolutely NO PARKING by exhibitors or guests on either side of the road in front of Animal Barns – SAFETY HAZARD! ** IMPORTANT NOTICE ** Announcement Concerning Avian Influenza Commonly Called "Bird Flu" Due to the ever increasing Avian influenza virus warnings from the state veterinarian office, federal authorities, Clemson Extension Service and the IAFE governing body, the Piedmont Interstate Fair has decided not to have chickens or fowls of any kind in the Farm Animal Exhibit. The Avian Flu is an infectious viral disease of birds that spreads very quickly and if even one bird shows symptoms, all birds in contact have to be destroyed. Even though we all love to view the beautiful, unique and interesting chickens displayed every year at the Fair, the risk is just too great for the animals, their owners and other farms involved. This policy is in line with almost every fair in South Carolina, North Carolina, and indeed, across the nation. The fair industry stresses there have been no outbreaks of the virus at past fairs and that the risk of infection in humans is low. Although the risks of any problems are low, the Fair believes this change is necessary out of an abundance of caution and is in the best interest of the exhibitors and the public. Hopefully by next year the Avian Flu will be in check and at that time the chickens will return for all to enjoy. This space in the Farm Animal Barn will not be empty or idle. The Sam's Path Petting Zoo will bring additional exotic animals to display for your enjoyment. 6
