UW SUMMER DAY Class Highlights - Construction Zone: Caution—Hard Hat May Be Required! July 10-21, 2017 Groups: Huskies and Bulldogs Drama/Storymaking with Dora Lanier “Hey Buckaroos, I’m building a ranch house.” “Greetings Dahhhhlings, I’m designing a high rise condo.” “My family bought a fixer upper in Greenwood.” “I’m constructing an extension on my castle; the knights need armor storage.” “Vrooom…my home is my RV – let’s hit the road good buddy.” All kinds of people make and live in all kinds of houses. In Storymaking we’ll write about these people and create stories to learn about their lives and the homes they build. In drama we’ll use drama games and improvisation exercises to create a play that celebrates ourselves and our dwellings. Art/Science with Andrea Johnson DANGER ZONE! Are you ready to rev up your imagination and get your hands dirty?!? We will be “under construction” building all sorts of homes from various materials. Where do materials come from to build homes? Dirt, rocks, sand water… mudpies. We will investigate the natural rocks and minerals of our earth that help create amazing buildings. All ages can be engineers, so bring your creative thinking caps and get ready to explore at Summer Day! Groups: Bison, Tigers, Rams and Hawks Art with Amanda Amsel Creative minds and designers come together for a week of building, drawing, and collaborative design! We will look at everything from buildings, to city structures, neighborhood designs, discuss accessibility in architecture, and work together in designing a new light rail station and neighborhood public space. Join our 2 -week Construction Zone with Urban Sketching, Printmaking, Sculptural model building and more! Drama with Angela Kelley What does it take to raise a barn, build a castle or design a town? Sometimes it takes a whole community of people working together. This session we will focus on working as an ensemble through some fun drama games and exercises. We will also rehearse and perform a presentation for family and friends on the last day of the session, inspired by community and castles! Storymaking with Emily Rich Get ready to read, write, draw, and learn all about construction! Each day we will work on creating stories of our own through fun projects that can be kept as a camp souvenir. Campers will try their hand at writing and illustrating their own books. They'll also explore the concept of construction by building their own 3-dimensional trioramas. Science with Barbara Purn Come on in, we have lots of building to do! We’ll try our hand at using STEM challenges to build bridges, towers, water pipe systems, earthquake-resistant structures, and maybe even an escape plan for Rapunzel. Then teams will create an ideal community with all the necessary elements to make it a perfect place to live. Creativity and fun is encouraged in all our scientific work! Groups: Bears, Panthers, Eagles and Lions Art with Amy Beck Welcome architects, contractors, artisans, designers and artists of all trades! In this class, we will explore the different elements needed to build innovative yet functional structures. Students will learn about design perspective, discuss what makes a building accessible, and work collaboratively to construct a city block. Bring your creativity and ingenuity; it’s time to break ground! Creative Writing through Music and Song with Arni Adler Come explore the art, craft and process of singing and writing. In this class we will sing and study inspiring songs that demonstrate the basic concepts of songwriting. Working in small groups, students will make patterns of rhythms and rhymes, learn to include feeling/emotion, and invent their own melodies. This class will encourage imagination and creativity as students write and sing original lyrics and melodies. At the end of the session we will share original songs for friends and family. Drama with Terence Kelley A Castle made of Coral you say? Built by one man? Impossible. How did he do it? Little is known of his childhood, he received only a fourth-grade formal education. Edward was a sickly boy who often spent time reading books, which helped him to develop an inquisitive mind and life-long yearning for the unknown. Physics, weight, balance and Arcane knowledge! Ed is the Wizard of Magnetism. Join us as we unlock his secret of the sweet sixteen Coral Castle! Science with Julie Schmick Calling all engineers! Bring your cyber tool belts because we will be constructing gidgets and gadgets using our coding skills with Scratch, designing structures with SketchUp, and building with WeDo Construction ™ from Lego. Hard hats not required! Out-of-the-box THINKING CAPS are a daily MUST!! KIDS IN MOTION with Regan Wessman (All Groups) KIM class will consist of group games that will involve teamwork, cooperation activities, and respect. It will be a fun-filled two weeks with lots of exercise, fresh air and hard (but fun) work!
