Early Years children went to Hatfield Forest
Following our ‘journey’ theme we went on the bus to Audley End Station, the train to Bishop’s Stortford and then the
bus to Hatfield Forest. We had an Art in the Forest activity run by the National Trust in the morning followed by a picnic
in the woods. In the afternoon we built dens climbed trees and had lots of fun!
Alexander “We jumped when the train driver beeped his horn”.
Lenny “The train was so loud”.
Deven “ I liked blowing the horn, buying the tickets and going fast on the train”.
Catherine Armstrong & Tiffany Johnson
Charlotte “I liked climbing the trees”.
Year
1 Trip to Ashdon Windmill
As
part
of our topic ‘Food and Farming’ Year 1 ventured to Ashdon equipped with
drawing materials, iPods and iPads. It was a glorious afternoon and after the
morning rain everywhere was fresh with the sun blazing down. The children
walked up to the windmill stopping where appropriate to draw the features as we
stumbled
across them. The fields had been recently ploughed but the heaps of
soil proved
as children
endeavoured to record what they saw.

fascinating
The Windmill was visible at the top of the hill so it made the journey more
enjoyable
to see it becoming closer and closer. The children were amazed to find a
man strapped to the sides painting it laboriously. I was very pleased with how all
children responded to this simple trip. They all were engrossed in their tasks,
the
working
well together, asking inquisitive questions and behaving beautifully. Well
done
Year 1.
What
did we think?
‘I thought
the trip was brilliant because I have never seen a windmill with a base
before’ - James
‘I liked drawing the pictures. It was superb’ - Charlie
‘We went through a tunnel of bushes. I heard noises. It was scary but exciting’ –

Poetry Fever!
Poetry fever is building as the children learn their poems before saying them in class on, or just before, Tuesday 14th
October. Kitty and Thomas's recitations at today's Harvest Celebration were magical! Award-winning poet, Tony
Mitton visits us on Monday 6th October to inspire us even further. Copies of his poetry collections will be on sale
then and he is happy to sign his books or real autograph books after school. To keep the process efficient, Tony
simply requests that children arrive with their name printed on a small piece of paper.

Where does our drinking water come from?
Years 5 and 6 visited the Affinity Water Education Centre last
week to discover more about where our drinking water comes
from and how it is processed. They were treated to a tour of a
water processing plant including high security doors, a tunnel of
death (the effect low levels of ozone has on flies), vast filtering
tanks and HUGE amounts of electricity. They investigated which
paper should be flushed down the toilet, the difference between
hard and soft water and how to solve a crime using
chromatography. As a result, we all understand more about why
water is a precious resource and that we should try to conserve it
in our daily lives.

Poetry about Rivers and River Creatures
In English
year 5 have been studying
in
personification
poetry.
They have composed their own poems about
rivers and/or river creatures:
He sprung from the rocks
Like a caged animal released from the trap
Picking up speed as he snaked around the bends
Ambushing and consuming siblings as he wends
Younger, stronger full of muscle
In his prime looking for a tussle
His sharp jagged teeth
Ensnare from underneath
Mottled green colours dance across the river bed
He stretches out changing the landscape as he fed
Tired of the river he struggles for supremacy
between fish and salt water of the sea
Sporting fixtures now underway
Thomas W
I am as excited as our children as we begin playing our regular fixtures and also have some brand new fixtures, so
we will face some fresh challenges ahead. We will play tag rugby this term and also, for the first time, we have
entered both U11 girls’ netball and U11 boys’ hockey teams into the IAPS regional tournaments taking place next
term. This provides a great arena for our pupils to showcase their sporting talent and ability.
Fixtures
The first fixture of the season was our Under 9 Football team v RAB. We lost to a strong team from RAB but were
kept in the game by an outstanding display in goal from Oliver C, saving shot after shot and an excellent goal from
Giulio S. The team played in great spirits, represented the school superbly and their grit and determination showed
great character and attitude. Man of the Match goes to Oliver.
We know that many other pupils have been excelling in sport outside of school at every level, and we wish them
the best of luck each week as they learn, improve and enjoy playing their chosen sports to the best of their ability.
