People:
Dear Reporters,
The circuit board would like to invite you to the 2017 LWMS Capitol Circuit Spring
Rally being held on April 22 at Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel. The address is 220 West
Gilman Street, Madison, WI 53703. A school bus has been reserved to bring people to
the rally, since parking can be an issue in downtown Madison. The bus will leave from
Lakeside Lutheran High School and make a stop at Eastside Lutheran Church. More
details regarding the bus will be sent to you soon. The circuit board is suggesting a
$5.00 donation per rider to help defray the cost of the bus. Please send a list of riders to
President Kim Gartner at [email protected] so we can get a good idea of
how many riders there will be.
The rally will begin with fellowship and sign in starting at 8:30am. Opening
devotion will begin at 9:00am. This will be followed by various mission reports as well as
a short business meeting, which will include elections. We are excited to have a full
slate of candidates this year. Our main presentation will begin at 10:45am. Pastor Scott
Wolfram will be speaking about WELS Campus Ministry using their theme verse, 1
Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” Pastor
Wolfram works with the Campus Ministry program at UW-Steven’s Point. Following the
presentation, lunch will be served. A bulletin insert will be sent to you later this month
that you can use to share this information with your congregation.
Mission offerings should be sent to Treasurer Kristi Twohig by April 10th. Her
address is W9035 Cty Road B, Waterloo, WI 53594. These offerings will be split
between the Pastoral Studies Institute and Repatriation Conferences as well as mission
projects voted on by the international LWMS membership.
We hope you can join us for this day of fellowship and mission support. You
provide the link to share this information with your congregation and we value your work
in doing so. May God continue to bless and keep you as you carry out the work as
Reporter for your congregation.
United to Serve Jesus,
Jill Doering

We can be forgetful like the disciples sometimes. We all believe God is there, but fear can
make that faith blurry and unclear. We can be foolish and forget that Jesus, who died for
our sins, is and always will be there for us.
God will always be there like a star in the night sky. “God has said, ‘Never will I leave
you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not
be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’ ” (Hebrews 13:5,6).
We can be confident that God will always be there for us. Like a star, he guides us out of
the grip of fear and darkness. God shines through the clouds and lights up the night sky.
God is there for us and always will be.
Now every time I wake up in fear or loneliness, I can look outside and remember to pray to
my Lord. I know he’s there and always will be there for me like a star shining in the night.
So now when I sleep, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me
dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).

PASSION READING: MATTHEW 26:1-35
NIV
The Plot Against Jesus
1When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know,
the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high
priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill
him. 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him
with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was
reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This
perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done
a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always
have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for
burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she
has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and
asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out
for him thirty pieces of silver.16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand
him over.
The Last Supper
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and
asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
18 He
replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My
appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your
house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they
were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean
me, Lord?”
Page 10
Page 3
23 Jesus
replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.
Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays
the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and
gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink
from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for
the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now
on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is
written:
“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
33 Peter
replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will
disown me three times.”
35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all
the other disciples said the same.
HYMN: 102 “Enslaved by Sin and Bound in Chains” (in the red book under your chair)
Sometimes fear makes us forget that we can come to God anytime.
Holly Backus
Fear, confusion, and loneliness. Sometimes these can be things that run through your head
after a nightmare. All you want to do is forget the scary things that woke you up and go
back to sleep.
It’s natural to be afraid when you’re alone, especially when it’s dark and you can’t see
anything. When I was younger and I awoke from a nightmare, I would have a routine. I
would sit up, turn on a light, and read for a while so I could fall back to sleep. I read so I
could forget all the things that popped into my head.
One night, after waking up from a nightmare, I sat up like usual. I looked around my dark
room and started to head toward my light. But before I got there, my eyes caught a glimpse
of something else. My window was open, and a slight breeze came through. I looked out
and saw the stars and moon in the dark night sky. All of a sudden I didn’t feel so alone. I
felt comforted. I continued to look outside until I thought of something better.
I folded my hands and prayed. That night I fell back asleep quickly and happily.
Sometimes when we’re afraid, we forget that God is there watching over us. This
even happened to Jesus’ disciples. They forgot Jesus was watching over them when a storm
threatened their boat (Matthew 8:23-27). They had forgotten about trusting Jesus. They
became afraid. When they finally woke Jesus, he scolded them for not trusting him. Then
he calmed the storm. Even when the disciples were with Jesus and had seen what he could
do, fear still got in the way of their faith.

SERMON TEXT: MATTHEW 27:1-5
NIV
Judas Hangs Himself
1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans
how to have Jesus executed. 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to
Pilate the governor.
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with
remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have
sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged
himself.
SERMON
BASED ON: MATTHEW 27:1-5

Turn to Jesus; Do Not Turn Away
Questions to consider while hearing the sermon:
Why is the account of Judas one of the most terrifying accounts in all of Scripture?
How might Satan try to wriggle in to your heart?
What was Judas' fatal error that we must at all costs avoid?
Save the Date!!
