Dundee Rep’s 5-star, sell-out production of
John McGrath’s The Cheviot, the Stag and the
Black, Black Oil arrives in Inverness for one
week only this October.
The highly acclaimed production tells the
history and the tragedy of Scotland, performed
as a Highland ceilidh, with song, humour and
drama intermixed; creating a unique theatrical
event, that remains as vital and relevant today
as it was when 7:84 Scotland first presented it
over 40 years ago.
This extraordinary play looks at the
exploitation and economic changes in the
Scottish Highlands throughout history, from
the ruthless evictions of Highland crofters
making way for the more economically viable
Cheviot sheep in the 18th century, to the
development of stag hunts in game parks in
the 19th century and finally the exploitation
of resources during the North Sea Oil boom
of the 1970’s.
Written as a musical drama by John McGrath, it
explores stories and experiences of Scotland’s
land, sea and people across the centuries.
Once again, the Dundee Rep Ensemble has
been granted permission to present this pivotal
piece of Scottish theatre.

Original music and Soundscape by Matt Clifford
Guy Masterson (Shylock, Animal Farm) returns to
Eden Court for the fourth time in 20 years with his
solo tour de force of Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece.
Celebrating a day in the life of Llareggub - a small
sea town somewhere in Wales - all 69 ebullient
inhabitants in Dylan Thomas’ timeless masterpiece
are hilariously recreated in an amazing feat of
memory and virtuosity. Complimented by a stunning
original soundscape, it’s bawdy and beautiful, sad
and sensual and, through the music of language,
leaves indelible, unforgettable images of humanity.
Isosceles productions make a welcome to return
to Eden Court after the success of On our way to
Lisbon, The Haunters and many other great shows.
Made famous by Richard Burton’s legendary
recording in 1954, Guy Masterson (Burton’s nephew)
brings it to vivid life on stage. This astonishing solo
performance has played over 1500 times, enchanting
audiences wherever it goes.

In search of love to infinity and beyond.
A new adaptation by Mike Maran
An almost unabridged journey through Inferno,
Purgatorio and Paradiso in search of Beatrice.
Will Mike Maran’s adaptation be as blasphemously
offensive as Dante’s sublime poem? Will Mike get
Dante’s girl? A mad flight of mesmerising medieval
stand-up.
Written 700 years ago The Divine Comedy sits at
the pinnacle of Western civilisation, one of the most
influential works of literature composed by poetry’s
most powerful practitioner.
Mike Maran’s A Divine Comedy is a smart, bold,
irreverant one-man show which sees Maran join
Dante through Inferno, Purgatiorio and Paradiso in
the quest for the meaning of love.
If you have seen Mike before (Captain Corelli’s
Mandolin, Italia ‘n’ Caledonia) you’ll know what to
expect. If you haven’t seen him before you will
be spellbound.

Ireland 1922 - and the Ulster Boundary Commission
has drawn the new border straight through the small
town of Puckoon. With the church separated from its
own graveyard and drink now thirty percent cheaper
in one corner of the pub, life in the newly divided
village will never be the same. Based on the book by
Spike Milligan, this comic masterpiece is an irreverent
and hilarious story which takes the mick, celebrates
the absurd, and paints a picture of a simple life that
borders on the ridiculous. You’ll be screaming with
laughter at the Goonish blend of theatrical anarchy,
musical wit, and impossible plot
…an undeniably enjoyable piece of storytelling…

Fulfilling a long held desire to pay tribute to his hero
Stan Laurel, Jeffrey Holland’s brilliant one man show
tells the intriguing, funny and often poignant story of
one of Hollywood’s great film comedians.
Set in the bedroom of a sick Oliver Hardy, the
show takes place during Laurel’s visit to the dying
man. Recounting their past success as the comedy
double act Laurel and Hardy, this is a humorous
and touching look at one of the great cinematic
partnerships of the last century.

In 1795 and 1805, Park led two expeditions to
West Africa to chart the River Niger and investigate
tales of vast gold wealth. Park died on the 2nd
expedition, along with nearly all of his party. His
journal survived. The play is a tragi-comic retelling
of the story, with the 18th century figure of Park
interacting with two young men from today. As
the story moves towards its latter stages, the folly
of Park’s project, its development into an ever more
crazy and violent colonial adventure is exposed. A

Once there was a time with no mobiles, no online
dating and no Facebook, when teenage girls waited
with bated breath by the letterbox for their weekly
issue of Jackie Magazine. In JACKIE THE MUSICAL
we revisit those heady days, and tell the story of a
recent divorcée who seeks advice once more from
the pages of her old Jackie annuals.
The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts
on first date’ and above all the Cathy and Claire
problem pages are all eagerly devoured by our
plucky heroine as she revisits the dizzy world of the
teen bible.
Starring Janet Dibley (The Two of Us, EastEnders,
Fat Friends), Olivier Award nominee Graham Bickley
(Ragtime, Bread) and Nicholas Bailey (EastEnders,
The Archers), JACKIE THE MUSICAL is accompanied
by a pulsating sound track of classic 70’s hits played
live including What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?,
Puppy Love and I Beg Your Pardon. Thrill once more
to the unmistakable sounds of pop idols Donny
Osmond, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan and many more.

The team behind 2013’s smash hit The Pirates of Penzance returns with
another Gilbert & Sullivan comedy classic. A stellar cast, in the hands of
director Martin Lloyd-Evans, brings the fun to life with a delicious mix
of cheeky English Music Hall and exquisite Japanese tradition.
The Mikado has decreed that flirting should be punishable by death.
But when his son Nanki-Poo falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum, it looks
like someone might be heading for the executioner’s block…
Packed with anti-Establishment silliness, and full of larger than life
characters including self serving politicians that are all too recognisable
today, this playful show features some of G&S’s most popular tunes,

A riveting, dark-hued work that casts a
swarming, scurrying group of dancers.
Emergence presents the full Company
on stage creating spectacular formations
and is set to a hypnotic electronic score
by Owen Belton.
For the first time in over 20 years, Scottish Ballet
will bring Swan Lake to the stage. This world
premiere adaptation is a modern and imaginative
retelling of the timeless tale.
Swan Lake portrays the love story of Siegfried and
the beautiful swan queen Odette. As fate has it,
Siegfried betrays Odette as he mistakenly declares
his love for Odile, the dark seductress. Eventually
Odette forgives Siegfried, but the trust between
them has been broken and Siegfried is forced to
face life without her forever.
Sophie Laplane
A New Work (World Premiere)
Scottish Ballet dancer Sophie Laplane
has increasingly been making her mark
on the dance world by creating delightful
and unique works. Laplane’s Maze was
performed as a curtain raiser for Scottish
Ballet’s Autumn Season 2015 and wowed
critics and audiences alike.
Choreographed by the award-winning British dance
maker David Dawson, Swan Lake will demonstrate
his visceral and daring work which has made him
one of the most innovative dance makers working
in classical ballet today.
Laplane’s singular style mixes humour
with inspiration from everyday emotions
and situations. The shapes she creates for
the dancers are as surprising as they are
distinctive and hugely entertaining.
With ethereal and stylish sets and costumes, and
Tchaikovsky’s iconic score performed live by the
Scottish Ballet Orchestra, don’t miss an enchanting
Swan Lake for a new generation.

Where do you begin to tell the story of
Scotland? With the myths, the legends and the
battles? Or by building a castle in your granny’s
back green.
Tales of a Grandson is one man’s re-telling of
Scotland’s history - but this is no straight and
dusty history lesson, this story is told by Andy
Cannon, formerly of Wee Stories and one of
Scotland’s finest story-tellers.
Andy takes us on a time travelling adventure
with his grandparents through Scotland’s past
to piece together the myriad of Kings, Queens,
friends and foes that make up our nation’s story
(and unearths just why our mountains are so
small on the way!).
Composer and musician Wendy Weatherby
joins Andy and adds to the Tales with music
specially composed for the show.

Niggle is a painter. Not a very successful one, partly
because he has so many other things to do. For
some time he has been obsessed with one particular
canvas - a curious picture of a tree with a vast
landscape stretching out behind it. The painting
keeps getting bigger and bigger, but Niggle has
a journey to make. He doesn’t want to go, but he
cannot get out of it...
In 1939 Tolkien was despairing of ever bringing his
great work The Lord of the Rings to a conclusion.
One morning he woke up with Leaf by Niggle
complete in his mind and wrote it down.
Surrounded by ladders, bicycles and heirlooms,
Richard Medrington (Jean from The Man Who
Planted Trees) recounts Tolkien’s miniature
masterpiece, with music specially composed by
Karine Polwart and Michael John McCarthy.
With thanks to the Tolkien Trust.

Kay (though ruder and cruder and with an extra
sprinkle of danger) Billy delivers universal tales
of childhood nostalgia in a show that throws the
script out and unleashes a wave of frantically funny
comedic nonsense!
Having previously supported Frankie Boyle
on his record-breaking national tour, Craig
Campbell is a formidable stand-up and one of
the most charismatic and inventive performers
around. He’s appeared on Michael McIntyre’s
Comedy Roadshow, Russell Howard’s Good
News, Alan Davies’ As Yet Untitled and Dave’s
One Night Stand.
Don’t miss this sneak preview of his forthcoming
show at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

New Horizons represents composers at points of
departure or venturing into new territory. Mozart’s
Dissonance quartet can surprise even 21st Century
ears, whilst MacMillan’s third quartet demonstrates
an astonishing range of expression. Dvorak’s
American string quintet illustrates how new
surroundings can influence and inspire.
Scotland’s flagship string quartet provides
intimate, vivid experiences of some of the world’s
greatest music.
Drama and darkness sit alongside lightness and
good humour in energetic young German conductor
Clemens Schuldt’s concert of contrasts.
The evening’s performances were vivid
and fresh, and the programme bold, full of
contrasts, and expertly delivered... brimming
over with energy and intensity.

Astonishing young British-Taiwanese pianist and
Alfred Brendel protégé Kit Armstrong is the soloist
in Mozart’s tempestuous D minor Piano Concerto,
K466. The concert begins with the wild, gripping
emotions of the Olympie Overture by Joseph Martin
Kraus, a contemporary of Haydn.
By way of complete contrast, Schuldt concludes
his programme with the warm-hearted Intermezzo
from Richard Strauss’s final opera, Capriccio, and
the graceful, sometimes mischievous playfulness of
Beethoven’s high-spirited First Symphony.

Travelling around Europe aged 23, Mozart was no longer the cute boy
wonder that had initially caught Europe’s attention, but this period of
his compositional life was hugely productive. SCO Leader Stephanie
Gonley and Principal Viola Jane Atkins join forces to perform Mozart’s
heartfelt and virtuosic Sinfonia Concertante, considered by many to be
his crowning achievement.
Experience the joy of youth and the freedom of the countryside in
Prokofiev’s First Symphony, which he wrote aged just 26 whilst on
holiday. We close with Beethoven’s ebulliently experimental and lighthearted Eighth Symphony, full of musical jokes and twists and turns
that delighted and challenged the audiences of the 19th century as
much as they do us today.

Tiny Ruins is an alias conceived in 2009 by
songwriter Hollie Fullbrook. Traversing early
influences of folk and blues, her sound draws on
ethereal and grungy soundscapes alike. Sometimes
likened to Nick Drake, Mazzy Star or Nico,
Fullbrook’s voice and guitar work evades cliché,
making use of alternate tunings by way of her own
self-styled fingerpicking. Lyrically one of a kind,
stories are laced with a dark humour that’s at times
disarmingly confessional.
Tiny Ruins has opened for Calexico, Sharon Van
Etten and an eclectic array of opening slots, from
Beach House, Joanna Newsom and Father John
Misty to Neil Finn, Ryan Adams and Leon Bridges.
Her voice, somewhere between Karen
Dalton and Nathaniel Rateliff, is filled
with contradictions - fragile yet forthright,
vulnerable but fiercely determined - the lyrics
allusive and elusive as dreams.

Together Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham have
established themselves as the epitome of
excellence in the world of traditional music.
Mike Russell has described them as probably
the best traditional musicians you are ever likely
to hear.
With their musical magic and quick-witted
humour they will pull your emotional strings
one moment and have you falling off the seat
with laughter the next. 2016 sees Aly and Phil
mark many milestones. This will be their 30th
year of working together, Aly turns 70 (hard to
believe!) in May and Phil also celebrates 40 years
as a professional musician. To celebrate they
plan some surprises on their annual trip round
Scotland including a nostalgic backdrop
of images from all those years and the release
of a new album.
