E8 Sunday, March 24, 2013 Hometown EDUCATION NEWS Bridgeport High School Students of the Month Bridgeport High School Students of the Month for January are Ashley Driscoll and James Jesmer; February’s are Lexi Pinti and Brett Hathaway. Driscoll is the daughter of Paul and C o l l e e n Driscoll of B r i d ge p o r t and the granddaughter of James and Dolores Driscoll and Ralph and Irene BeckDriscoll er. She has been an honors student throughout high school and is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Academic Letter and Lamp of Learning. Driscoll has been active in a variety of school activities, including the French Club, the French Honorary, the Key Club, Science Bowl and the school orchestra. She also attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security. She has been selected to the West Virginia All State Orchestra the past three years and was recently recognized as the top high school cellist in West Virginia. In addition, she has been a multi-year member of the West Virginia University’s Honors Orchestra and has performed as the orchestra’s principal cellist. She has played in many venues, including the Philadelphia International Music Festival and Gov. Tomblin’s holiday party at the Governor’s Mansion in Charleston. She also was the cellist for the Simpson Creek Baptist Church’s Christmas Cantata the past two years. Driscoll was selected and attended both the Governor’s School for the Arts and the Governor’s Honors Academy. She also co-composed and performed a musical composition at the Clay Center in Charleston as part of the West Virginia Department of Education’s Arts Alive program. Her efforts resulted in Bridgeport High School being awarded a $1,000 grant to support the school’s arts department. She has been active in the community throughout her high school career. She has been a substitute catechist at St. James Church and a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help youth group and has played the violin and cello during services at both churches. She also participated in the Relay for Life, assisted patients at the Heritage Nursing Home and performed cello musical pieces for residents of multiple nursing homes. She received the PROMISE and West Virginia University Presidential scholarships. She plans to attend WVU in the fall and double major in music education and cello performance. Jesmer is the son of Mark and Anita Jesmer of Bridgeport. He has been an active member of Key Club for the past four years. He has received Jesmer the award for Key Clubber of the Month twice for outstanding service hours. He served as the Club Bulletin editor and public relations chairman his junior year. For his work in this position, he was recognized as a Distinguished Bulletin Editor at last W.Va. Wesleyan receives $100k scholarship gift West Virginia Wesleyan College has received a $100,000 gift from William and Mary Conner. The donation will be used to establish a scholarship in memory of Richard K. Wol- year’s District Convention. He is currently serving as the District Bulletin Editor for the West Virginia District of Key Club International. As district Bulletin editor, he serves on the executive and public relations committees. Jesmer has been a member of the high school swim team since his sophomore year. He has received a varsity sports letter and has been a state qualifier each year. He also was chosen as second team All-County sophomore and junior year and second team Big-Ten his junior year. He has also been a member of the YMCA’s swim team for four years. He is also an active member of National Honor Society. He also has received an Academic Lamp and Letter every year of high school. Jesmer represented the school at Mountaineer Boys State last June and was sponsored by the Bridgeport Kiwanis Club. He plans to major in architecture at Fairmont State University in the fall. He has received the four-year Charles McClain scholarship to FSU. Pinti is the daughter of Mark and Kelly Pinti of Bridgeport. She has been an active member of Student Council, Key Club, Young Life Pinti and Campaigners, along with participating in Shop for Tots. Pinti has been involved in high school athletics, including danceline, cheerleading and swim team. She was named Big 10 cheerleader in 2011-12. She was chosen to attend the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Conference her junior year. She represented Bridgeport High at West Virginia Rhododendron Girls State in June 2012. She attends Horizons Church. She is a member of National Honor Society and has been a recipient of the Academic Letter and Lamp of Learning. She plans to major in occupational therapy at West Virginia University. Hathaway is the son of Jeff and Janet Hathaway of Bridgeport. He is the grandson of Bill and Shirley Hadorn and the late Durwood and Vivian Hathaway. Hathaway has played football for B r i d ge p o r t for four years. He has been selected to the first team AllState football twice, as a junior and Hathaway as a senior. He has also been a first team selection for two years as a junior and senior to the All Big 10 Conference, All Harrison County and All Mon Valley teams. He was also the winner of the Frank Loria Award his junior year. Hathaway finished fifth in voting for the Kennedy Award as a junior. He was also selected as a McDonald’s State Player of the Week during his senior year. He has been selected to play for the North Team in the North-South AllStar Classic in June. He also has played baseball and was a member of the freshman basketball team. He has always been an honor roll student and has been the recipient of the Academic Letter and Lamp of Learning. He was also part of the Teacher Cadet program at school. He is a member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church. ford, the stepbrother of Conner. The newly-endowed Richard K. Wolford Scholarship will be awarded to students with financial need who pursue a major in the natural sciences at Wesleyan. Wolford was a 1953 chemistry graduate of Wesleyan and enjoyed a distinguished career in the field. The Exponent Telegram LOCAL NEWS Bandland Center announces student of the month Bandland Education Center’s Student of the Month for March is Riki Satterfield. In addition to studying bass guitar at Bandland, he is in eighth grade at Washington Irving Middle School, where he plays drums and bass guitar in the band. Satterfield, along with his two brothers, participated in Bandland’s fifth annual Rock Camp. He was an original member of the first Garage Band in Summer 2012, which performed to a standing-room- only crowd at Buffalo Wild Wings in Bridgeport. His guitar instructor at Bandland is Walt Mick. He is the son of Jim and Melissa Satterfield.
