April Fool’s Day ~ April 1, 2013
April Fool’s Day or All Fools’ Day is celebrated on April 1st in several countries around the world. The origin of the holiday is uncertain. Some believe the celebration may date back to 1582
France when Charles IX introduced the Georgian Calendar and
moved the New Year’s celebration from March 25-April 1 to January 1st. People who continued to celebrate New Year’s on April 1st were called
“fools” and had practical jokes played on them. Perhaps that’s why April Fool’s
Day is usually celebrated by playing practical jokes today.
Ching Ming Festival ~ April 4, 2013
The Ching Ming Festival is also known as Grave-sweeping Day. During this festival, Chinese families visit the graves of their ancestors to clear away weeds,
touch up gravestone inscriptions and make wine & fruit offerings. The official
date of this year’s Ching Ming Festival is April 4, 2013. However, people may
start visiting tombs on March 20, 2013 because this is the middle of Spring.
Earth Day ~ April 22, 2013
The first Earth Day celebration occurred on April 22, 1970 when millions of
US citizens demonstrated for a better environment. The protest
eventually led to creation of the EPA. Twenty years later, the Earth
Day movement went global and boosted worldwide recycling efforts.
