Morse- Helped invent telegraphic communication (Morse Code). 1. U.S. Markets Expand • specialization- The raising of one or two cash crops that could be sold. • Market Revolution- When people began to buy and sell goods rather than make them for their own use. A. The Entrepreneurial Spirit • capitalism- Economic system in which private businesses and individuals control the means of production (factories, machines, and land) and use them to make money. • entrepreneurs- A person who organizes, operates, and assumes the risk for a business venture. • Entrepreneurs provided the money, property, machines, and factories that fueled the expanding economy. B. New Inventions • Charles Goodyear created vulcanized rubber in 1839. • The rubber didn’t freeze in the cold or melt in the heat (tires) • Elias Howe created the sewing machine in 1846. • I.M. Singer invented a foot treadle that allowed for clothing to be mass produced in factories. C. Impact on Household Economy • Technology made items less expensive allowing more people to purchase goods. 2. The Economic Revolution • New inventions made life more enjoyable or fueled the economy. A. Impact on Communication • telegraph- Carried messages, tapped in code, across copper wire. • Businesses could communicate prices and railroads used it to keep trains moving regularly. B. Impact on Transportation • The inventions of the Steamboat and canals linked the regions of the U.S. • This expanded the markets for farmers and industry. New Markets Link Regions • Growing links to each region led the different regions to specialize in certain products. A. Southern Agriculture • The South thought factories led to overcrowding • Wealthy Southerners had their money tied up in the land. B. Northeast Shipping and Manufacturing • Investments in canals and railroads helped the Northeast become a center of trade. • The rise in manufacturing also contributed to the Northeast becoming a center of trade. C. Midwest Farming • John Deere- A blacksmith that invented the first steel plow. • The steel plow cut through heavy soil faster than existing plows. • Cyrus McCormick- He invented the mechanical reaper. • One farmer could do the work of five hired hands.
