5 JANUARY/2009 Nadia Bosi Pucci sales Dirctor PUCCI 11 « First of all Happy New Year! Especially for 2009 our wish intends to be genuine and free from any trace of rhetorics. It goes without saying that this is likely to be an uphill struggle, and not just in Italy. We all can rely, however, on some stable elements that enable us to look forward to the future, namely the solidity of our company and the ideas we are working on; the motivating force which in time of trouble prompts all Italians to give their best and the positive acceptance of the new products introduced on the market, a demonstration that innovation does work when it satisfies the demand expressed by the public. Aware that it is just during difficult times that it is fundamental to be positive, let us all roll up our sleeves, each in his own sector, and 2009 will surely be a better and more successful year! » THE QUALITY OF THE ITALIAN ENVIRONMENT EDITORIAL Let’s all bet on and look forward to A SUCCESSFUL ITALIAN 2009 IS STEADILY IMPROVING Italy is growing more concerned about the quality of the environment but there are differences between the North and the South. This is the picture given by the ISTAT report, which analyzes the most relevant urban environmental indicators: population and territory, water, air, energy, waste, noise level , transportation, urban parks and gardens. From the data collected it appears that the differentiated waste disposal has reached a good level, air pollution is decreasing and the areas dedicated to parks and gardens are growing. Domestic consumption of water has also decreased by 2.4%: all cities analyzed have shown a general decrease and the positive record has been reached by Naples with –15% . 1 Pucci Montaggio Rapido® sara Pucci Montaggio Rapido® eco CLOSE-UP 31 The current success A RAPID RESTART! A useful innovation solves problems, satisfies requests, either expressed or latent, and meets the actual needs of the people with whom a product regularly interacts. We once again feel comfortable in talking about Rapido Pucci, the suspended bowl frame, because it was one of last year’s “positive achievements”. It was in fact well accepted by both the installers and the general final consumers; such good acceptance on both levels is therefore the secret of its success. PUCCIPLAST SPOT Widely known are already the plusses that make Rapido a frame ideal for a quick and precise installation: it is already preassembled, it requires just two steps and it is ready for assembly. Rapido makes work easy for all professional installers. For those instead who are planning to use it in their bathroom, Rapido means quicker installation and as a consequence a reduction of assembly time and costs, let alone the inconvenience of having the bathroom all in a turmoil, which of course is never a pleasure! 1 4 CLOSE-UP with rapido’s plusses MANY ADVANTAGES FOR YOUR BATHROOM Since Rapido is pre-assembled and the tank is already mounted, installation is easier and more precise and, since it is used to install a suspended WC bowl as well as a suspended bidet, it makes for a better and easier cleaning, hence a much better hygiene of the entire bathroom. Last but certainly not least is the solidity. When mounted on a frame as 51 sturdy as Rapido, the WC and the bidet can be subjected to the roughest use without suffering any damage (they are childproof!) and their sturdiness is guaranteed for many years to come. We thank all those that have appreciated Rapido and have encouraged Pucci to continue along the road to innovation. 1 6 DOSSIER A different point of view EVEN VIRTUAL WATER HAS COSTS HOW MUCH WATER IS NEEDED TO PRODUCE: 120 l 71 135 l 2.000 l 2.400 l 215 liters is the quantity of water used every day by every Italian, part of which is surely wasted. Little attention is furthermore paid to the amount of water used for production of foodstuffs and industrial products. 120 liter of water is for example needed to produce a glass of wine (the water needed to irrigate the vines); for one egg we need 135 liter (that’s as much as a chicken needs to produce it); 2000 liters are required for a cotton T-Shirt (to water the plant); for a hamburger we need 2400 liters (needed to feed and quench the thirst of one cow or bull). Experts of the WWF call the water used to produce other goods “virtual". Based on the above every Italian consumes 6500 liters of water a day (second in the world, first are the United States) and only 30% of such quantity comes from our territory: the rest is used to produce the goods that we import. Furthermore, if the goods come from countries with limited water resources, our life style contributes indirectly to the consumption of this precious resource in places where it already is scarce! From a global standpoint only Brasil, Mexico, Japan and China import more water than Italy. 1 8 DOSSIER 1 9 consumerist italy GOODS, SERVICES AND WATER CONSUMPTION The “consumption mark” of a country is represented by the volume of water it requires to produce the goods and services needed by its inhabitants. It is based on four factors: the quantity and typology of consumption, the agricultural techniques, the climate. Let’s take for example the consumption of foodstuffs: a vegetarian diet requires a virtual consumption of 2000 liters of water a day while a meat-rich diet requires 5000 liters of water a day. The Italian consumption mark is among the highest in the world. The 2003 climate and draught caused a hydrological crisis. The result was a conflict between agriculture and hydroelectrical stations on the exploitation of water resources even in water-rich Northern Italy. Northern Italy has a lot of water, which is however often used in a reckless way. Southern Italy can count on minor water resources, partly wasted because of leaky aqueducts. The market price is definitely lower than the value of the water and therefore the level of consumption and waste continues to be underestimated. Leaflet dedicated to a recent WWF campaign on water wasting, titled: “WATER IS LEAKING OUT ALL OVER THE EARTH” 1 10 FORUM An exhibition distributed among five different locations ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF CREATIVITY IN PIEDMONT An important and quite interesting exhibition titled "900, One Hundred Years of Creativity in Piedmont" opened on December 5, 2008 and will close on March 28, 2009. Distributed among five different locations the exhibition is sponsored by the Società Palazzo del Monferrato and by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio of Alessandria, in collaboration with the Municipalities of Alessandria, Novi Ligure, Acqui Terme and Valenza. Shown here are 250 works by 150 artists "who have left a deep mark in the XX Century History of 1 11 Art” and in modern painting, sculpture and graphics. In Alessandria, at Palazzo del Monferrato, one can find the early ‘900 Piedmontese art with works by: Morbelli, Pellizza da Volpedo, Carrà, Chessa, Casorati; at Palazzo Cuttica, the works originated from the province of Alessandria with paintings by Bozzetti, Morando, Dina Bellotti, Fallini, Porta, Marchelli, Maddalena Sisto. The Museo dei Campionissimi of Novi Ligure exhibits late XX Century works by Spazzapan, Merz, Mastroianni, De Maria, Salvo. Alessandria Acqui Terme Novi Ligure Valenza 1 12 FORUM 1 13 between local and global AN EXHIBITION OF XX CENTURY WORKS OF ART At the Movicentro of Acqui Terme can be admired the contemporary sculpture and installation with works, among others, by Mainolfi, Grassino, Viale, Bolla, Todaro; at the Oratory of San Bartolomeo in Valenza are exhibited wash designs, water colour paintings and drawings by Bistolfi, Pistoletto, Boetti, Cremona, Paulucci. '900 is an expo of international importance which works quite effectively on a “local” level: in fact Piedmont, probably like no other Italian region, has contributed to the growth of personalities who have given impulse through the XX Century to artistic movements such as Pointillism, Futurism, Methaphisics, Modernism, Abstractionism, Pop Art, Poor Art and Conceptual Art”. The tour makes it possible to appreciate in addition to the most renown names, less famous artists as well, who have contributed to the recent history of the Italian Arts. 1 14 Many of you have written to our editorial office after the publication of our first issue using thr form on the last pages, and it's been a pleasure to answer you all.
