New Legacy Society
Everyone leaves a legacy. W hat w ill your s be?
The Terraces at Bonita Springs Foundation Legacy Society is for anyone who includes a gift to the Terraces in
their will, trust or estate plan.
As a relatively new Foundation, we are very pleased to
welcome the first members to the society; Coach Charlie
and Shirley Hyke. We are grateful to the Hyke’s for
making plans to donate artwork and collectibles to The
Terraces at their passing. They’ll continue to enjoy the
items during their lives and rest easy knowing the
contributions will help to enrich the life of each senior we
serve when they pass away.
Members have the option of having their names displayed
in perpetuity on a new plaque on display at The Terraces.
What’s in your Will? Ther e ar e m any w ays to join
our Legacy Society. The easiest method is to bequest a
percentage, or fixed dollar amount, of your assets to The
Terraces at Bonita Springs Foundation in your will or trust. Visit our
website https://www.theterracesatbonitasprings.com/foundation/ and
click “For Advisers” for sample wording you can use in your plans.
View our Legacy Society brochure online or pick one up from our
pamphlet racks. You can join the society by naming the Foundation as a
beneficiary of an IRA or life insurance policy or by establishing a
charitable gift annuity with us.
Donors can restrict the gift in their estate for a certain purpose. For more
information, please contact Foundation Director David Kremer: mobile

When to Review Your Estate Plan
By Dennis Landfried
Question: How often do I need to r eview m y estate
plan?
Answer: Alth ough ther e ar e no h ar d -and-fast rules about
when you should review your estate plan, a good rule of thumb is
to do a review immediately after any major life event, once a
year for a quick review based on the economy or tax code changes, and every five years for a thorough review.
You should consider reviewing your estate when other
circumstantial events happen in your life, such as:

Your marital status has changed or the marital status of your children or
grandchildren has changed

There has been an addition to your family through birth, adoption or marriage

Your spouse or family member has died, become ill, or is incapacitated

There has been a substantial change in the value of your assets or in your plans
for their use

Your income level or requirements have changed

You have made a change in your estate plan (e.g., you created a trust, or
executed a codicil to your will)

The executor, trustee or guardian changes his or her mind about serving in that
capacity
Reviewing your estate plan will not only give you peace of mind, but will also alert you
to any changes that need to be addressed. If you have questions about your estate
plan, talk with your advisor.

The Terraces at Bonita Springs Foundation is actively seeking donors willing
to include a gift to The Terraces in their will, trust or estate plan.
Tired of Earning 1%?
Consider a Charitable Gift Annuity
A charitable gift annuity with The Terraces at Bonita Springs Foundation is a legal
contract between the Foundation and you, in which you agree to provide a gift and, in
exchange, we guarantee you income for life!
So, How Much Can You Earn?
The annuity will pay you a fixed amount for the rest of your life. To get the exact
amount you can earn, contact us with your name(s), birthdate(s) and the amount of
money you plan to fund the annuity with. We’ll get you a FREE proposal showing the
payments and tax benefits. Your charitable gift annuity may pay you as much as
4-to-9%!
You can set up the charitable gift annuity to make payments to either one or two
individuals (beneficiaries or annuitants), for their lifetime. Payments can start right
away or later. You can use cash, securities, and other real property to fund the annuity.
Tax deductions for this type of life-income gift vary with the number of recipients and
the age of the donor at the time of the gift. It may be beneficial to you to use
appreciated assets to fund the annuity.

Normally a donor makes a gift
for a certain purpose, The
Terraces thanks them and the
money is spent on that
purpose. With endowments,
the donor makes a gift for a
certain purpose, The Terraces
thanks them and then the
money is invested. Only the
earnings are used each year for
the purpose the donor chose. A
minimum of $10,000 is
required to establish an
endowment fund. Contact

NEW: An Easy Way to Make a BIG Difference!
By David Kremer, Foundation Director
Some residents at The Terraces at Bonita Springs have a new way to
donate. Th ey can fill out on e of two sim ple for m s to m ake
a charitable donation to The Terraces at Bonita Springs
Foundation…and use the refundable portion of their entrance fee to
do it!
This may be a way to make a sizeable gift without jeopardizing the
resident’s current financial status and without updating a will or
trust!
Most residents signed residency agreements which stipulate a percentage of their
entrance fee is refundable to their estate at their passing. The Florida Office of
Insurance Regulation has approved two new forms we created which allow our residents to donate all, or a percentage of, the refundable portion of their entrance fee to
The Terraces at Bonita Springs Foundation.
The donor can choose the purpose of the gift and can decide to make it either
revocable or irrevocable. The revocable form can be changed at any time just like a
gift in your will.
Some may want to consider making the gift irrevocable. That’s because irrevocable
gifts from an entrance fee may be counted as a gift to charity now for tax purposes.
Donors may be able to spread out this sizeable charitable deduction over five years.
It’s Simple!
1. You pick the gift amount and decide if you want it to be revocable or irrevocable
2. We prepare the form for you to discuss with your family and advisors
3. If you decide to proceed, you sign the form and that’s it!
This is a convenient option for those who don’t want to update their will or trust.
If this gift option interests you, please call me today at (mobile) 352-262-6510 to learn
more.
Thank you!
Preventing Elder Abuse
As part of our mission to enrich the life of each senior we serve,
we want to share helpful information with you about preventing
elder abuse. One common form of elder abuse is financial
exploitation.
The Florida Department of Elder Affairs has this advice on how
to prevent it:
Stay
Socially Active—isolation increases your risk of becoming a victim
Get
to Know Advisers—establish relationships with the professionals who handle
your money, they can help detect changes in your activity that may signal a
problem.
Understand
What You Are Signing—before you assign a power of attorney, understand the scope of the agreement and the authority you are giving your agent.
Be
Cautious of Joint Accounts—both parties are equal owners of the account and
both have equal access to the funds.
Document
Financial Arrangements—by putting these in writing, you not only protect yourself but you also reduce the likelihood of legal proceedings.
Ask
for Help—Financial matters can be confusing. Ask your own trusted advisers
and family for help.
Use
direct deposit for checks.
Don’t
sign blank checks allowing someone else to fill in the amount.
Don’t
leave valuables in plain view.
Don’t
sign anything you don’t understand.
Be
aware of scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Don’t
give anyone your ATM PIN number and cancel your card immediately if it is
stolen.
Check
your bank statements carefully for unauthorized withdrawals.
To report elder abuse, neglect or exploitation, call the Adult Protective Services
Abuse Hotline at 1-800-962-2873. For m or e infor m ation:

What does ‘Advancing Exceptional Associates’ Mean?
Along with caring for seniors in need, providing vital services and programs and
ensuring state of the art homes and technology, The Terraces at Bonita Springs
Foundation accepts gifts for ‘advancing exceptional associates.’
Associates is the word we use to describe our employees. The Foundation has two
ways it helps our exceptional associates to advance.
1. ASSOCIATE ASSISTANCE FUND
An associate experiencing an unexpected financial
hardship due to an accident or another emergency
can seek help from the Foundation’s associate
assistance fund. A committee of associates meets to
review requests for help and make decisions on the
amount provided. Your gifts make a difference.
2. ASSOCIATE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Five associates were given educational scholarships
of $1,500 each this year to help them pursue their
dreams. A committee made up of residents and
management met to review the applications and
make award decisions. Generous donors throughout
the year who specify a gift for this associate
scholarship fund helped make these dreams come
true!
Donors, of course, may choose how they want their
gifts used. Contributions of any size, large or small,
to either of these funds are welcome year-round.
Easy Monthly Giving
You can fill out an easy form to set up automatic monthly gifting to The Terraces at
Bonita Springs Foundation. You simply choose the amount and what account the
money should come from. This might be a quick and easy way for you to help!
