Holy Trinity Parish Evangelization Column 10.30.16 By Erin Stuvek God Is Not Like Us: Part I We’ve been taught since our youth that we are made “in the image of God.” Unfortunately, we often “make God into our image” as a result of life experiences, past hurts, poor catechesis and so on. We make the mistake of thinking that God is like us: that He looks like us, lives like us, and loves like us. We must stop thinking so “small” about God! God is so much more awesome (in the truest sense of the word) than we can possibly conceive. There is a particular danger in thinking that God loves like us. We have all been hurt by people we love – it is, unfortunately, inevitable that our imperfections reveal themselves even in the healthiest relationships. But the Love of God is not imperfect like our love. God’s love for us is perfectly free, faithful, total, and fruitful. This week, I’ll shar e some thoughts on the fir st two attributes of Divine Love. I was mind-blown when I first heard about God’s free love for us. Most of us are used to working for love – to be loved according to achievement. The truth is this: you cannot, no matter how hard you try, earn God’s love. God will never love you any more or any less than He does right now. No matter how hard you pray or how terribly you sin, God’s love for you is always overflowing. It is not possible to win more of God’s love, or to lose it. This kind of love – love that’s truly unconditional, with no “reason” or self-serving purpose behind the love – makes us uncomfortable. We aren’t used to it, and it can be a critical source of ongoing conversion for us, or a source of ongoing struggle. Either way, it is good that we call to mind that God gives Himself to us freely, over and over again. His love is faithful. When the everything around us is crumbling, God remains steadfast. In an ever-changing world, it is critical to remember this. Even if the candidate we vote for doesn’t win the election, even if we lose everything we have, even if we are forsaken by everyone we love, we are NEVER forsaken by God. God’s love is committed, and He is in control. Jesus became human, in part, so that we would know the depths of God’s faithful love for us. In our own trials and suffering, we can be assured by a God who has freely chosen to suffer through the same things during His own life – even unto the most horrific death in history. We must remember the cross, and not lose confidence in His faithful love! I invite you to reflect this week on the “unfairness of grace”: That God loves you freely, no matter what you do (good or bad), and that He’ll never abandon you. Do you (or does someone you know) have quesƟons about God? Looking for resources to learn more? Curious about Catholicism? I would love to talk with you. Feel free to email me ([email protected]) or call to set up an appointment. Page 6 HELPSUPPORTHOLYTRINITYSCHOOL WITHTHEPURCHASEOFGIFTCARDS!
