WA Education Awards: CVC Teacher Anita Piccioni One of the Best

Term 3 2016
WA Education Awards: CVC Teacher
Anita Piccioni One of the Best
Lunchtime games, mentoring students and creating
engaging lessons were among the reasons CVC teacher
Anita Piccioni was nominated as 2016 Beginning Teacher of
the Year.
Ms Piccioni, who has been teaching at CVC since 2014 is a
Multimedia and ICT teacher. Her passion for photography,
IT and game design has seen her build excellent
relationship with her students based upon common
interests, trust and rapport. She said she was driven to
incorporate the technological landscape into her
classes. “My focus is to harness the importance of utilising
technology in the classroom to help students explore
concepts relevant to our changing world.”
The winner of 2016 Beginning Teacher of the Year will be
announced at an award presentation ceremony on Monday
November 28.
The following CVC staff members also received nominations
in the WA Education Awards:



Cindy Van Der Wal (School Psychologist) for
Support Staff Member of the Year
Crystle Challinger (Circus) for Secondary Teacher
of the Year
Debbie Oorjitham for Manager of Corporate
Services of the Year
The WA Education Awards are an annual event that honour
and reward the dedication and passion of staff in public
schools who are committed to providing the best possible
education to children and young people across Western
Australia.
Ms Piccioni is among four WA finalists recognised for their
commitment to their roles.
Ms Piccioni‟s expertise has led her to present at local
universities and later this year she will be travelling to
Kathmandu University in Nepal, where she (and fellow CVC
teacher Miss Sarah Eve) will present at the first
International Conference on Transformative Education
Research.
She has also been selected as one of two teachers at CVC
who are being trained intensively to enable them to provide
one-on-one coaching for all staff at the school to harness
the power of Apple devises to improve student learning.
Head of department Aaron White commented on her ability
to improve curriculum and build the capacity of others. “For
a beginning teacher, Anita has demonstrated a high quality
of leadership. She will share her experience with other staff
and up skill them where appropriate,” he said. It has been
said teachers can learn more from her in a classroom than
any one hour professional development session.”

RUOK Day
Thursday the 8th of September was RUOK Day, a day
dedicated to remind people to ask family, friends and
colleagues the question, "R U OK?", because connecting
regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to
make a difference to anyone who might be struggling. With
1 in 4 young Australians experiencing mental health
problems every year, checking in with someone to help
prevent the situation from getting worse could be life
changing.
Throughout the week of RUOK Day CVC ran a number of
events for students. Members of our Junior Circus Troupe
who are in partnership with Act-Belong-Commit performed
at various year group assemblies throughout the week.
On Friday the 9th of September the Student Councillors ran
a before school pancake breakfast for all students and
staff. Life City Church provided entertainment with live
music throughout recess. Headspace, a National Youth
Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention
mental health services to 12-25 year olds, came along to
hand out information and provide advice to students.

CVC Circus Troupe Primary School Tour
In Week 7 of Term 3 the CVC Circus Troupe went on tour,
performing at local primary schools. The show was part of
an Air Grant that the troupe secured last year. The students
have been working intensely with a number of professional
artists to add a new level to their performance. This year‟s
show had a building & construction theme and showcased
the troupe‟s skills in acting, mime, juggling, gymnastics,
dance, balancing and music using props such as water
bottles and wheelie bins, as well as real instruments
including ukuleles. The primary students loved the
performance, with schools ringing the troupe‟s praises:
“The response from your visit to our school was
unanimously BRILLIANT! Our students were inspired to try
some new hoop and diabolo tricks during our circus time,
and the staff were still talking about how amazing it was
several days later! I personally was impressed with the
teamwork and how well the students all worked together to
create a well presented show.” - Wilson Primary School.
“Once again the CVC Circus group put on an entertaining
and skilful performance that thoroughly enthralled students
from Kindy to Year 6. The feedback from students,
teachers and parents was 100% positive. A
great story, a great group of students who represent their
school magnificently.” - Huntingdale Primary School.
“I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate your
students on the wonderful circus performance that they
provided for our students. The Act, Belong, Commit
message was clearly delivered by a group of students who
really demonstrated just what this means. The combination
of enthusiastic drumming, rock music and circus was highly
entertaining and inspiring for our students. It was also
fabulous to see some of our ex-students as part of the
circus troupe. Once again, thank you.” - Campbell Primary
School.
“Thank you for sharing your circus with us – most
enjoyable. Remembering that kids can be the harshest of
critics, this from a Year 5 girl: I really liked the way they
incorporated the music into their story line and I was really
impressed with the way they acted. I also liked the way
they set the theme on a construction site, instead of a
boring house theme. I had so much fun watching the
circus. They were funny and silly.” - Excelsior Primary
School
“We can't possibly express fully how much our classes
enjoyed your circus. It took our breath away and the
children's eyes were as round as saucers. They really took
home the intent of the message to Act, Belong and Commit
and we were able to discuss this back in class time. What a
wonderful springboard for discussions about resilience!” Canning Vale Primary School
The following week, the circus troupe also put on two night
performances for family and friends.

Gosnells City Football Club Win
Congratulations to CVC students Jack Kiama, Darryn Mitton,
Joe Knox, Connor Griffiths and ex-student Tyler Phillips,
who recently won the 2016 under 18 soccer league for
Gosnells City Football Club.
Sam Tucker (another ex CVC student) was worthy captain.
Both Jack and Darryn scored in a 2-0 win.
It was euphoric night in front of the traveling blue army
and they celebrated the win as any team would. This is the
third year in a row the team have won the division 1
league, and considering most of our CVC boys are 17 years
old; it‟s a great achievement.
Great to see our Year 11-12 students excelling as young
men and members of their community!

As part of their own assessment requirements, and to
provide some exposure to other schools music programs,
our Year 10 Certificate II and Year 11 Certificate III
students also performed their recent repertoire for these
visiting students.
Newton Moore‟s teachers passed on very positive
comments about our staff and students. “Our students had
the best day, which ended a very successful 3 day music
camp on such a high note. The quality of the student‟s
performances and the way they handled themselves on and
off stage is a reflection of the quality education facilitators
you have at CVC.”

Numero Challenge Competition
A BIG congratulations to the whole Year 7 NUMERO gang
who travelled all the way to Ellenbrook on Tuesday 23rd
August to participate in the annual NUMERO Challenge
Competition. This year the competition was held at
Ellenbrook Secondary College, with 18 teams participating
ranging from Year 7 to Year 10. Our two teams not only
performed extremely well, but received a special mention
from the coordinator of the competition for their
outstanding sportsmanship. The competition includes
several individual and team games where points are gained
on the results of each „take‟.
The CVC Calculators came 4th overall, and The CVC Clan
came 7th. The CVC Calculators were the top Year 7
competitors. Both teams came top in some individual and
team events throughout the day.
We are all looking forward to next year‟s competition. If
you would like to be part of next year‟s competition, keep
an eye out for the NUMERO Club starting soon.

Canning Vale College has just signed a „Memorandum of
Understanding‟ with Murdoch University Arts and IT
Faculties. After working on the project for the best part of a
year, Teacher in Charge of Media, Ms Lennox said it is a
fantastic opportunity not only for students but also for staff
at CVC. This new agreement will see CVC and Murdoch
working closely together on three key areas:



Professional development for teachers
Student experience and enrichment
Outreach (lecturers visit CVC)
Visit to the ICT Faculty
So far, this agreement has seen a group of excited CVC IT
students visiting the university to do workshops with the
Dean of IT and other lecturers. They were surprised to
learn that Virtual Reality (aka „gaming) can also have
serious uses. Students explored how Virtual Reality is being
incorporated into an „app‟ for stroke patients to make
exercising more appealing.
Lecturers come to CVC
Already John McMullen, Lecturer in Charge of Screen and
Television has come in to advise on the set up of our „Live
Studio‟ where we‟ll be filming the news. Lecturer in Charge
of Radio and Sound, Leo Order was able to offer
professional help in assisting us to set up our high spec‟
sound recording equipment.
Murdoch University Mentors
Our next adventure will see students from the university
taking on a mentor role with our students, an excellent
opportunity for our current and future media and ICT
students.

National Science Week
Well done to the 30 enthusiastic students who battled it out
in the first National Science Week competition on Tuesday
th
16
August. Groups attempted to build the tallest tower
using only straws and plasticine. In the end it was Year 7's
Amber, Georgia and Isaac who constructed a 203cm
leaning tower and took away first prize. Not far off were
Joshua, Marcus and Ronan with their solid structure
reaching 178cm.
Skills West Expo
As part of the Year 10 subject counselling process at
CVC, students attended the Skills West Expo at Perth
Exhibition Centre on Friday 12th August to investigate
the world of work, training and further education.
With over 70 organisations exhibiting their services, the
excursion was particularly useful for students to gain
access to information from a wide variety of
organisations. Our students were exceptionally well
behaved and were able to use the opportunity to gain
valuable information into their future career paths. More
importantly through attending the Career Expo, students
learned about the various opportunities available to
them, encouraging them to achieve their goals.

students. All students received their TISC login details
during this time, required to access the online TISC process
for entry into university for next year.
On Saturday the 2nd of July CVC Autism Specialist Program
(ASP) students attended their final session of the Curtin
University Autism Academy for Software Quality Assurance
(AASQA) and received their certificates of participation.
Over the past 9 weeks students in the ASP have had the
opportunity to work with mentors from Curtin University
and industry partners to gain an understanding of software
quality assurance testing practices, and develop an insight
into the skills required to gain university entrance. The
results have been fantastic, with a significant increase in
student confidence – we can see these students
transitioning well into tertiary studies in the tech area and
be very successful at that!
The program which was recently awarded winner at the
Western
Australia
Information

Pokemon G(e)o
If you have seen an overly excitable group of Year
7's walking around the school grounds in groups
armed solely with phones and a map, fear not as they have
been investigating mapping using Pokémon Go. A tenuous
link to
the
Geography
curriculum
some
might be mumbling... however if we think about it:







They use our school map
They draw their grid lines and plot their eastings
and northings
They apply BOLTS to the map
They work in groups
They plot in the little Pokémon critters
They use area reference to locate them on the
map
They use grid references to locate them again
They then summarise their field trip using direction/ area
reference and distance in paragraph structure. It was great
to see the boys leading the charge which isn‟t often the
case! Thanks to the tech savvy, Pokémon inspired, Mrs
Pratt and the ever eager Mrs Bonilla Cerna for inventing the
task. The kids loved it!

Winter storms and cold nights are a harsh reminder that
many people in our community are in desperate need of
help. Throughout Term 2, the CVC student council were
collecting non-perishable items (canned foods, pasta, rice,
baby food, cereal etc.) as part of the Foodbank Food Drive.
This year Canning Vale College collected enough food to
provide 13,054 meals to Western Australians in need,
almost double what we raised last year! As one of the 51
WA schools taking part in the appeal, we knocked last
year‟s collection out of the park by together collecting
6,527kg of food across metro and regional WA. A great
effort by all!
