Miguel Gonzalez Parochial Vicars: Rev. Serge Pardo Rev. Martin Nguyen Today is the last Sunday of Ordinary Time. With the Solemnity of Christ King of the Universe, our Jubilee Year of Mercy has also come to a close. Christ King of the Universe, is the King of Mercy and Compassion. Next week a new liturgical year begins in our Church, as we welcome the Advent Season. In preparation for this season that leads us into the celebration of Christ’s birth, it would be a great opportunity for us to recall how this jubilee year was able to prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus Christ, the King of Mercy. We need to prayerfully consider how we allowed Christ’s powerful gospel to penetrate and transform our lives, by starting a new life with Him and with others. Let’s take time today and ask ourselves the following two questions: Did we experience His forgiveness and loving compassion? Did we extend that love and compassion towards others? The Solemnity of Christ King of the Universe draws us into an awareness of our need to recognize how important it is for us to strengthen our relationship with Christ. Christ will always be our strength and our hope. Deepening our relationship with Him helps us to surrender with joyful trust our lives, to a King that fills our lives with tenderness and love. Fully aware of the magnitude of His love, I am able to express my most sincere thanks and my deepest desire to reciprocate His unconditional friendship. This can only be done by extending that love and friendship with the people I encounter daily whether at home, work, school, neighborhood, or in my own parish. As we begin a new liturgical year, we take advantage of the invitation our King of the Universe extends to us all, by approaching the Eucharist. It is at His table that we are drawn into the mystery of His love and the invitation to share His love with the world. May His Body and Blood sustain us as we persevere in our desire to make Christ’s Kingdom a reality here on earth. Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we can’t do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to acquire “things”. Try putting God first in all things instead. We humble ourselves before the majesty of Christ the King and we await His return with eagerness and joy. We look forward to the beginning of another liturgical year with Advent, which is also an anticipation and longing for Jesus’ return in glory. The Carmelite Order is a “call” for those whose hearts are drawn ever deeper into a life a prayer, contemplation, and sometimes even a mystical immersion into the ineffable encounter with the Triune God. This is a lifelong journey of desire, of discipline, of humility, of love and service, in a community of others whose desires are the same. If you are drawn to seek out a deeper encounter with Christ, whether in an “oasis” of experience, or the great gift of dryness and desert, the Carmelite Order may be the “home” for you. The St. James Lay Carmelites meets the third Saturday of each month after the 8 AM Mass in the Parish Council room. Anyone interested is welcome to join us.
