Guests: Jessica Samuels, Kelowna Gospel Mission (speaker), Nelson Bayford, Business Finders, guest of
Helmut Hubert, Ken Feist, guest of Rene Bernard, Bryan Jabs, guest of Walter Jabs and Santana, Lady
of the Lake candidate.
Exchange student Isa has had a quiet week, apart from a very early morning panic when she thought she
was late for school (she wasn't so she went back to bed). Next week she will be passing the 'hat' as she is
very bravely having her beautiful hair cut in aid of KSS Cancer Project. Please bring lots of cash for her
cause.
President Jim Belshaw starred on AM1150 again and told Phil Johnson all about his meeting with Mrs
Harper in Vancouver. She bought two bags of shoes from Sussex Drive to donate to Soles4Souls.
Vancouver South MP Wai Young also donated shoes and Soles4Souls is up and running in Vancouver.
Greig McPhee introduced speaker Jessica Samuels who is the co-ordinator for the Kelowna Gospel
Mission's 30K Club. The Mission provides support and change for the homeless, working poor and others
in need. They work closely with other agencies in the community.
Jessica told us that the 30K Club was set up during the 30th anniversary year of the Mission, four years
ago It started with 1000 members of the community committing to donate $30 per month. This money is
used to support the clients from dependence to independence. The Gospel Mission currently serves 3
meals a day 365 days a year, has 90 emergency beds, a dental clinic which has provided $1 million in free
dental care, clothing, barber services, a chaplain and the Helping Hands thrift store.
The 30K Club money finances the next step to independence in three main areas: housing, health and
hand-up. Jessica is raising awareness of the club and would be happy to hear from anyone interested in
becoming a member. Please contact her at [email protected] or on 250-763-3737 ext
212.

Paul Mulvihill has had a letter from Ruth Jackson, weekend she is going through the final stage of stem
cell transplant with stem cell donation from her sister. The procedure is not painful but the anti-rejection
drugs may have unpleasant side effects. Her children are keeping things going in Kelowna. Our thoughts
and prayers are with Ruth this weekend.
Rutland Hall Make-Over , this Saturday and Sunday from 8am. Dan Hilbrecht thanked everyone who has
volunteered to help. Please bring sunscreen, safety glasses, gloves and any tools you think would be
useful for surface preparation and painting. Lunch will be provided. On Sunday a parking area will be
reserved for Rotary so just let the person on the gate know you are involved in the make-over.
A few more volunteers are needed for Monday to Friday; 12 noon to 8 pm. Contact Dan if you can help.
Steve Goddard - Soles4Souls - shoes will be unloaded 9.50 Monday morning, May 7 at the warehouse,
2604 Enterprise (opposite Tim Hortons). The more the merrier to help with this. If you have any shoes to
donate and are unable to get to one of the drop off locations please bring shoes to next Friday's meeting
and Steve will pick them up. Sorting will be on Tuesday morning 10-12 as usual.
Don Martin - Rotaract are still looking for a venue for their Tuesday evening meetings, it needs to be able
to accommodate 15-20 people. The Good news is that Sean Misfeldt and Laurel D'Andrea have stepped
in as Rotary liaison with Rotaract, thanks to them.
Lady of the Lake candidate, Santana, told us about the Speech and Talent Night, June 5. She will be
singing at this event and would like to practise her song at one of our Friday meetings, we will look forward
to that.
President Jim has now got a wonderful display of Rotary pennants at his store and it is proving to be a
fantastic conversation piece. If anyone would like to have a similar display in their store or office we have a
large collection of pennants in storage.
Angela McLean-O'Heir presented Jim with a cheque for $1000 for Soles4Souls from Prospera Credit
Union.

Wine Draw was won by birthday boy Chris Murphy who was then treated to a 'tuneful' rendition of Happy
Birthday to You.
Linda Frandsen reminded everyone about the Big Bike Ride, Saturday May 26 12.15. We need lots of
pedalers/pedalees and a team captain.
Bruce Brown - Meals on Wheels are looking for a new board member, they meet once a month usually on
a Wednesday or Thursday at 1.30 although it may be possible to move the meetings to the evening if more
convenient. Meetings usually last up to two hours and this is the only time committment. Please let Bruce
know if you are interested.
Sheriff Gary Bowker used his informants (snitches) to fine Bill Reynolds and Sean Misfeldt for wearing
matching shirts and Jim Hunter -hands in pockets during O Canada. Chris Murphy was fined just
because it was his birthday and it reminded Gary that his younger brother is 50 this weekend. As it was
Star Wars Day (May the fourth be with you) a short competition was held between tables to name SW
characters - who knew there was a Storm Trooper called Jerry Sedmak? All those who had not bought
tickets to a Spring Wine Festival event were named and shamed (fined).
HAPPY/SAD
Chris Murphy - happy that his sons are doing exciting things with helicopters and boats.
Gary Bowker - would like someone to work with him as Interact liaison for the new Rotary year with a view
to taking over, Gary is finding it difficult to get to the meetings.
Craig Garries - many thanks to Dan Hilbrecht for all his work and time spent on organising the working
party for the Rutland Hall make-over, and to Sunrise members for volunteering.
Pat McAllister - has become involved in volunteering at the Kelowna Gospel Mission and they do fantastic
work.
Russ Grodzuik - happy to announce the birth of a baby son, Silas, who arrived a little early but is doing
well. Congratulations to Russ and Rebecca.
Laurel D'Andrea - made it through a family wedding with only a small amount of scotch. Kelowna Gospel
Mission has had many success stories. Laurel also encouraged Sunrise members to take their unwanted
sports equipment to Jane Fletcher's new sports consignment store - opening on Kirschner Road. The
proceeds from the sale of the items can be donated to Rotary if requested.
Ken Davidson - sorry he cannot help with the make-over but he is running the Vancouver Marathon on
Sunday. He hopes to beat 5 hours.
Graham Bell - confirming that Chico Newell's daughter is in a beautiful part of the world.
Jerry Sedmak happy that his Mum has come through her operation.
Chico Newell - is heading for Ottawa where his wife is being decorated with the Order of Merit from the
Police for her outstanding service.
Steve Goddard - thanks to the Starbucks collectors; they know who they are. Everyone - please consider
joining the 30K Club and supporting the Kelowna Gospel Mission.
Don Martin - is looking forward to finally attending a 'Santana' concert.
Jim Belshaw - the Rotary International convention is being shown by webcast from Bangkok (14 hours
ahead of us). The first RI Convention webcast goes live on Tuesday May 8 2012, 9.15 to 11.45 (GMT + 7
hours) Bangkok, Thailand. Join in English by clicking or pasting this link in your browser.
http://rotary2012.sessionupload.com/ . For the latest convention coverage go to www.rotary.org . Chico's
daughter and the other students will be performing a magic show there.
Meeting closed with music from Mary J Blige, Jessica's favourite performer.
