T
he 2013 CBA Magnate Award was held on March 8, 2013 at the UNC Students’ Pavilion
as the highlight of CBA Day celebration. This is an annual event of the department which
aims to recognize both faculty members and students for their outstanding performance in
academic and non academic endeavors during the school year. This year’s theme, “Shaping the
Business Leaders of Tomorrow”, truly reflects the university and college objective: to transform
students through quality education into empowered leaders, competent professionals and pro active
entrepreneurs. The keynote speaker, a UNC – CBA alumnus exemplifies the vision of the school. He
is Mr. Jeremie Janssen Sy Lo, currently the Bicol Regional Governor of the Philippine Chamber
of Commerce and Industry. In his very inspiring talk, he stressed the importance of education and
encouraged all students to persevere in their lives while still young. The same meaning was the
content of the reflection message delivered by Ivy T. Apolinario, a fourth year CBA student.
The university personalities who graced the occasion were: Dr. Lourdes S.
Anonas, the Executive Vice
President and Vice President
for Academic Affairs, and
Dr. Eduardo H. Sison, the
Vice President for Administration. Dr. Nora Elizabeth
F. Maniquiz, the CBA Dean
and overall chairman of the
Magnate Awards marked the

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS AND ACHIEVEMENT
Editorial
The previous school year has been concluded and the new school year has dawned.
Once again, we are on the path leading to our dreams. Along the way, we became witnesses
to how success was designed. During our journey, we experienced encouragement, support
and happiness that pushed us to achieve more. However in the same journey, we likewise
encountered trials, difficulties and challenges that tested our patience, courage and
determination. In spite of these obstacles, we still managed to stay on track and succeed.
This special issue of the Tycoon is all about success and achievement. We have
carefully prepared feature stories of UNCeans who have won their own battles, in their
respective chosen fields of endeavour and shared with you their inspiring words to ponder
on. One is a story about a girl who never fails to smile in spite of the hardships in life
and has taken a giant leap through her college graduation.
Another is an epitome of a true – blooded business tycoon
Maria Sharon B. Reyes,
representing the private sector, and the last one is a highly

public sector. Various facets of success were carefully

TRUE-BLOODED
BUSINESS
TYCOON
True-Blooded Business Tycoon
More than 18 years ago, the alleys of the UNC High School Building (then Alba Hall), Students’
Pavilion and other parts of this University became silent witnesses to the development of this man. From his
college graduation in 1995 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, he has gone a
long way. Let us get to know the man who we consider as a “true-blooded business tycoon”, Mr. Jeremie
Janssen Sy Lo.
“J Lo” as he is fondly called, is the son of Mr. Jaime D. Lo and Mrs. Rosario S. Lo, both of whom
are successful entrepreneurs. He spent his basic education at the Saint Joseph School. Right after high
school, he entered the portals of the University to earn his college degree. His chosen course matched the
world he was born to…BUSINESS. At young age, he has held various significant positions in the familyowned business. So, while earning his degree in college, he was also meeting the demands from a young
entrepreneur. Since 1992 until the present, he is the Vice President of Bicol JL Agri Corporation, a familyowned firm. This gave him the hands-on training in business career.
From 2003 to the present, he is the President of Excelsure
Marketing Corporation, and from 2007 to present, the President
of Vast Agro Solutions Incorporated – Crop Protection, both
of which are owned by their family. Within the bounds of
his responsibility as a businessman, he has mastered various
facets of entrepreneurship: from initiating innovations, to the
application of strategies, ensuring profitability, and managing
people. Indeed, this man has really proven his worth; that
the path of success was not simply laid for him through these
family businesses.
Adding meaning to his endeavors is his own family. He
is married to Ms. Meline Ngo Lo, also an alumna of the CBA.
They are blessed with three wonderful children that complement
their blissful married life.
Aside from his noteworthy accomplishments
in business, he has actively occupied positions in
various major organizations. He is a member of
both the Rotary Club of Naga and Junior Chamber
International. From 2000 to 2002, he was the President
of the Bicol Offroad Club and as Vice President for
Luzon of the National Association of Filipino Off
Roader. He was the President of the Camarines Sur
Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 2010 – 2012,
and the Regional Governor for Bicol of the Philippine
Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 2012 – 2014.
Aside from these private organizations, Mr. Lo is
also involved in the public sector as Private Sectoral
Representative for Camarines Sur in the Regional
Development Council from 2012 to present.
His numerous accomplishments make every
UNCean proud and inspired. His life is indeed
worthy of emulation and the College of Business and
Accountancy takes pride in his success. To share
4

his ideas and experiences, Mr. Lo
was invited as a keynote speaker
in the “CBA Magnate Awards” on
March 8, 2013 where deserving
UNCeans were recognized and
awarded. Let us once again
rekindle the encouraging words
he has addressed the honorees.
“To the University of
Nueva Caceres administrators,
faculty and staff, College
of Business and Accountancy
students, friends, ladies and
gentlemen, good evening.
I
stand
before
you
tonight, deeply honored and
humbled of the invitation to
give this keynote speech in
this celebration of yours.
Also I feel energized to be
among these young people, so
alive and full of power. It is
always a pleasant experience
to be with young people, the
youth of today with so many
ideas, so many dreams and a
lot of promising talents.
And with so much and so
many things ahead of you, do
not allow yourselves to be
lost in this frenzy. Do not
be swayed easily on what is
“in” and what the majority are
actually doing. Let us actually
get to the real thing.
And the real thing is,
learning and taking the full
advantage of your education.
Your stay in this institution,
mastering
the
skills
and
competencies will help you
become leaders of this nation
in the very near future.
You will become tomorrow’s
business leaders that will
significantly contribute to the
betterment of your respective
communities.
Our
world
is
rapidly
changing - and the changes
affect every business, every
industry and every country.
The future of our country
is in your hands.
So much
is expected from you. You
should be able to meet the
challenges ahead of you, both
professionally and personally.
It is not an easy task but I
am confident that the values
and theories that you learn
from this school will be your
armaments as you battle in
real business world.
As early as now, dream
big. Be inspired to be the
very best person that you
can be. Do not settle for
mediocrity. Always do things
with passion and never forget
your social responsibility.
As a Filipino, as a Bicolano,
you should always have that
sense of patriotism, a renewed
faith in our country, in our
people.
As
an
entrepreneur
myself, I have had my share of
valuable lessons in leadership
and management. Everyday, I am
faced with challenges that I
believe are experiences that
will make me really appreciate
success in the truest sense
of the word. In all these
challenges and trying times,
I am always amazed of how I am
able to hurdle them by simply
going back to what is real.
The real thing means hardwork,
passion for the things that I
do and never ever compromise
my principles.
These I believe are some
of the real things that we
should all possess in order to
make a difference. Again, good
evening to all and thank you
very much.
Let’s get to the real
thing… a mysterious line, a
puzzling statement. These are
just things that came to my
mind upon reading your theme
for this year’s CBA Day, going
to the real thing.”
Indeed, getting to the “real
thing” is something everyone
must start doing. College life is
a wonderful stage of our lives that
is full of great experiences and
people. However, we must always
bear in mind that “real” life awaits
after we leave the portals of our
university that served as our
“comfort zone” for several years.
We might have fully honed and
utilized our potentials through
the various activities within the
campus and off-campus, but let us
not forget that these are only our
training grounds…a simulated
battlefield that equips us with the
various traits, strategies and skills
to prepare for the world after
college…our stepping stones
towards success. This is clearly
stated in our University Motto,
Non Scholae, Sed Vitae, Not of
School, But of Life.
In the meantime, amidst
the difficulties and challenges
of finishing our degree, let
us enjoy every moment as
a student. Let the words of
Mr. Lo ring in our ears, “And
the real thing is learning and
taking the full advantage of
your education”. Let us seize
every opportunity that comes
our way to improve our being.
What matters is not the number
of trials that made us stumble,
but the number of times we
stood up and continued our
journey. A very notable quote
says, “Look well to this day.
Yesterday is but a dream and
tomorrow is only a vision. But
today well - lived makes every
yesterday a dream of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of
hope. Look well therefore to
this day.” (Francis Gray, http://
www.entrepreneurskorner.com)
Life of UNCean continues
beyond graduation… extending
to real world. Just like Mr. Jeremy
Janssen S. Lo, let us become
significant contributors to the
society…the way a true-blooded
tycoon should be.

CBA’s OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS…
A SELF – MADE MAN
Seeing a man who has gained huge
recognition through his achievements,
yet remaining humble and simple is very
rare. This is what best describes Atty.
Nelson M. Aspe, CPA. Atty. Aspe is
currently a Deputy Commissioner of
the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
From his humble beginnings, he rose to
the top through hard work and dedication
to public service.
He entered UNC High School in
1969, which he finished as 5th honorable
mention in 1973.
He then took up
his Bachelor of Science in Commerce
Major in Accounting where he acquired
the necessary knowledge and training
in Accounting. His perseverance and
competence paved way to his graduation
in 1977 with flying colors.
After passing the CPA Board
Examinations, he joined the Guzman
– Bocaling and Co., CPAs as a Senior
Auditor, then he became a Junior Partner
for V.M. Torres and Co., CPAs. Both
stints gave him the necessary exposure
and training in the private sector and in
his chosen field.
After a considerable time spent
in private practice, he decided to join
the government as an employee of the
Bureau of Internal Revenue. He started
as Revenue Enforcement Officer and
rose to become Technical Assistant
for the Office of the Commissioner,
Assistant Chief of the Legal Division
of BIR – San Pablo City and Group
Supervisor of Caloocan District. Being
a lawyer, his journey towards his career
path did not stop there. He was promoted
to Technical Assistant to the Office of
the Deputy Commissioner, Legal and
Inspection Group, then later as Chief of
Staff for the Office of the Commissioner,
Operations Group, and Regional
Director for the Revenue District of
Makati City. After years of hard work
and dedication, his biggest break came
in July 2007 when he was appointed as
Deputy Commissioner until the present.
Programs were initiated during his term.
One of which was “Oplan Kandado
Program”, involving closure of business
establishments who do not comply with
BIR laws and regulations.
To add to his very impressive track
record, Atty. Aspe is a member of the BIR
VAT Review Committee, responsible
6
Tycoon June.indd 6
for the formulation of VAT-related
regulations, ruling, memorandum orders
and circulars since 1977, and is also a
member of the drafting committee for
important revenue regulations. He was
assigned as the Philippine representative
to the 2002 tax forum in Seoul, Korea.
He was also sent as BIR head to the Study
Visit to the Swedish Tax Agency and
Statistics in Stockholm in 2008. During
the same year, he headed the Philippine
delegation in the Study Group for
Asian Tax Administration and Research
(SGATAR) in Guangzhou, China. His
years of meaningful experience plus his
competence in the taxation field proved
to be his greatest assets that made his
superiors confident to send him as head
of the BIR delegation to Tokyo, Japan
that took part in the discussion with
Japanese tax officials relative to audit of
large enterprises and selected industries.
In November 2011, he again headed
the Philippine delegation for the Study
Group for Asian Tax Administration
and Research in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah,
Malaysia. His knowledge, skills and
unfaltering experience made him a
favorite guest speaker to talk about
his work and profession. Recently, he
was invited to speak in the 67th PICPA
Annual National Convention in Butuan
City last November 28 to December 1,
2012.
To
honor
this
alumnus
and to recognize his significant
accomplishments, he was awarded by
the University as Outstanding CPA in
Government Service for 2011.
Indeed, Atty. Aspe is a self-made
man. From his humble beginnings
within the walls of the University, he has
strived and risen to where he is now…a
man of courage, determination and
honest public service.
The
following
was
the
commencement
speech
delivered
by Atty. Aspe to UNC High School
Graduating Class 2013. May this give
us inspiration to believe in ourselves
more and try working for a fruitful and
successful tomorrow.
“When I received a text message
from one of my former classmates
in high school inviting me to speak
before all of you today, I was both
honored – and humbled. It is
always a great honor to be asked
to speak before young people such
as yourselves – idealistic, hopeful
and full of enthusiasm for the
life ahead of you. I know you are
so eager to begin a new phase in
your life. What, indeed, can I
share with you that can be of help
to you as you write a new chapter
in the story of your lives?
Thinking back on the years
since my own graduation from
secondary schooling exactly forty
years ago, I can say that life has
taught me many lessons. So, with
your indulgence, let us talk about
what I like to call “Some Things
Every Graduate Should Know
About Life after High School”.
1.
You may not find the perfect
course in college. The next phase in
life – college level - is a fiercely
competitive environment, and
there will be many other young
people out there whom you will
meet coming from other schools
and places.
They may have
credentials as good – or maybe
even better – than your own. But
you must not, however, let this
thought intimidate you.
Every
person has his or her own unique
qualities, and it is your unique
strengths that will set you apart
from your peers. You may have
to work very hard to find a place
at the collegiate level, and it may
not even be the course you really
want. But you must always look
at every aspect as an opportunity
that will bring you closer to the
goals you have set for yourself.
Remember, success is usually
more a matter of hard work,
determination and commitment
than luck. Do not be afraid of
taking the hard road, of studying
long hours, and even that of
sacrificing a few weekends, as
you build your careers in college.
Many believe and agree that
the goal achieved after many
sacrifices and long hours of toil
is definitely more fulfilling than
the prize won through a stroke of
luck.
2.
Remember that what you have
learned in school is just a drop in the
bucket when compared to the knowledge
that is out there. What you have
learned within the walls of the
school is not the sum total of all
June 2013
8/29/13 11:30 AM
knowledge in the fields you have chosen – it is merely intended to prepare you for the greater lessons of
life. Education is a never-ending process because there will always be new concepts, new perspectives, new
insights, that will change the landscapes of your chosen professions and open every sector of society to new
developments. For instance, forty years ago, doing research meant spending days at the libraries, reading
through dozens of books and journals, which at times are not accessible. Today, research means sitting
in front of a computer and clicking on a mouse, while the marvels of information technology take us to
websites created and maintained by people half a world away. All these changes in life as we know it are
proof that we must never stop learning new things, and that we must always be open to new ideas and new
approaches in our chosen fields. For, it is only the fool who thinks that he knows everything.
3.
Eventually, you may land a job and when considering job offers, remember that not everything comes down to money. It
is often far too easy to grab at a job prospect because of the tempting salary being offered. But while it is
only natural for you to consider how much you will be paid for a job, you must also remember to take into
consideration other factors, such as the kind of work that you will be asked to do, and whether you may –
somewhere down the line – have to compromise your principles in order to get the job done. Remember that
a good name and an honourable reputation are things that can never be bought, or measured in financial
terms. Success that comes at the price of your self-respect and your values is no success at all. In the same
manner, your health and well-being are far more valuable than any compensation package. No one can
blame you for considering a job offer with a substantial salary – but just remember that success should also
not come at the price of your health. After all, it would be a great shame if you were to end up spending
your retirement benefits on a hospital stay, instead of on a relaxing vacation in a place that you’ve always
wanted to visit.
4.
And last, but certainly not least, always have conviction. Life will teach you that people ultimately have little
respect for fence-sitters, those persons who never take a stand on issues, who never have the courage to speak
up for what they believe in, who can never seem to make a decision, or who are content to follow other people’s
opinions. It is, of course, understandable for you to seek the advice of your parents, relatives and friends –
indeed, it always helps to consider different perspectives in an issue. But you must always be able to make a
decision for yourself, taking into consideration what you know in your heart is best for you, and ultimately,
what is the right thing to do. This builds character and helps you to
face the challenges of life with courage and serenity. Remember
that no one can live your life for you – it is you who must take
responsibility for your life and the direction in which you will go.
My dear graduates, I will be honest – life is always going to
be challenging, especially now that you are about to become
professionals, earn your own living, and make your own decisions
as to what direction you wish to take in life. It is not an easy
road by any account, but it is a road that I know, from personal
experience, can bring you great fulfilment. All life asks of you is
that you should have the courage and the commitment to live each
day fully, and to give your best in everything you do, whether it be
at work or at leisure.
If there is one thing I will ask of you, it is to remember these very
wise words of Pope Benedict XVI:
“All people desire to leave a lasting mark. But what
endures? Money does not. Even buildings do not, nor
books. After a certain time, longer or shorter, all
these things disappear. The only thing that
lasts forever is the human soul, the human
person created by God for eternity. The fruit
that endures is therefore all that we have
sown in human souls: love, knowledge, a
gesture capable of touching hearts, words
that open the soul to joy in the Lord. So let
us go and pray to the Lord to help us bear
fruit that endures.
In everything you do, therefore, seek to fulfil the
Will of God, and to be an instrument for His Plan of
Love and Goodness for all mankind. In this way,
your life will truly be a success. Congratulations,
and may God bless us all.”
Atty. Aspe emphasized the importance of the
knowledge and training gained within the corners of this
University. However, one must grab the opportunities
offered by the world outside. Our college degree is but
a key to open the doors of success. To quote a line from
his speech, “Remember that what you have learned in
school is just a drop in the bucket when compared to the
knowledge that is out there.” Prospects are just waiting to be tapped. All we have to do is fully utilize our potentials.
Truly, Atty. Nelson M. Aspe, CPA, our outstanding CBA Alumnus is a self-made man.

A Lady Who
Always Smiles
A popular quote says “The journey to a
thousand steps begins with the first one.” These words
aptly describe the preparation laid by a young lady
who has an insurmountable amount of willpower
in life. Ivy T. Apolinario is a March 2013 graduate
of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration,
major in Operations Management . She has hurdled
numerous difficulties and still emerged victorious.
Finishing her degree is her “BIG LEAP” towards a
better future, says Ivy.
Following is the speech she has delivered
during the CBA Magnate Awards in March 2013. May these words leave good thoughts and inspiration
to everyone. Life is not a bed of roses…but along the way, we learn from the lessons and people we meet.
“If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it away from him. An investment in
knowledge always pays the best interest.” – by Benjamin Franklin.
CBA Magnate Awards happens every year to give recognition to students who have excelled in their
academic and non-academic pursuits. For me, this event is not just a day of recognition but also a realization
of dreams. Yes, a realization of dreams. It was two years ago when I first witnessed a student who gave her
insights and reflections on this stage. Her name was Sheena Pagsuyoin, she was the first honors then and she
graduated as a Summa Cum Laude in this University. As I listened to her, I got inspired and started to have
a dream. A dream that one day, I will also be able to stand in front of the CBA Achievers, CBA faculty and
guests, with all eyes on me, sharing my victory, my joy and my story. Finally! The dream I’ve been waiting for
has come. I am here in front of you. God is really good.
My journey in college life has never been easy. There were times when I thought that I could not make
it anymore. Fate had tested me so much. I’ve encountered a lot of hardships and pitfalls. There were times
when I had to stop schooling because my family could not afford it anymore. I worked as a cashier in a food
chain and in a department store. There, I learned how to deal with different kinds of people. I was able to
realize the value of every centavo that my parents had spent for me.Thus, I promised to myself that I will work
hard to become worthy of all their investments in me.
Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve been to different schools in my college journey. I’ve been to University
of the Philippines, Los Banos in Laguna, Mabini Colleges in Daet, Jose Rizal University in Mandaluyong,
University of the East in Manila and now here in the University of Nueva Caceres. I took up Forestry, Nursing,
Accountancy and now Business Administration Major in Operations Management. You may be wondering
why?The reason was that I didn’t know what I really like then. I was confused because I still didn’t know what
my real purpose in life. But you know what? I don’t have regrets for what happened to me.I believe that God
had put me in that situation because He has a better plan for me. He let me experienced the wrong courses and
He brought me into the wrong schools because He wanted me to appreciate the right one. He allowed me to
explore in order to have a better view of who I really am and what I really want. Now, I’m here in the College
of Business and Accountancy at the University of Nueva Caceres and I could say, that it’s here where I truly
belong. I believe everything happens for a reason. Because of what I’ve been through, I learned that in life, God
8

will not give you what you want
but He will give you what you
need. It may not be on the time
that you want it, but it will come
on His perfect time. All we need to
have are patience and faith.
I did not grow up in a
wealthy family but I could say that
I am a rich person. I am rich not
in materials and luxurious things
but I am rich because I was blessed
with beautiful, caring, supportive
and very loving family. My family
is my inspiration. They are the
reason why I am still striving to
achieve all my dreams. I am just
sad that they cannot come here
tonight because my Grandmother
is in the hospital right now and
that they had to take care of
her. Anyway, I will just wait for
our graduation day since they
promised that they will all come
to celebrate the realization of our
dream – my college graduation
day. To my loving family, thank
you and I love you! You are the
wind beneath my wings and
there’s nothing I can’t do because
I have you.
God has been really so
good to me. He never let me
down. During my darkest despair
when I thought I was all alone,
He was the one who gave me all
the hope and encouragement. My
faith in Him keeps me alive. Yes!
He is the one giving us all the
trials, challenges and difficulties
that we are facing everyday. But I
want you to know that He is not
doing that because he doesn’t care
for us, or because He just wants
us to suffer. His purpose is for us
to become better and stronger
persons. He also wants us to
realize tha He is REAL, that we
just have to look and ask for His
help because He is just waiting for
us. We must not be afraid to face
life every day. Every day is a gift
from God. Every day is beautiful.
Every day brings new hope. If we
will only nurture our relationship
with Him, you will see that God
will give you all the strength and
courage that you need in order to
win all your battles in life.
I would also like to take
this opportunity to honor and
thank all our professors in the CBA
Department, most especially our
very supportive and caring Dean,
Dr. Nora Elizabeth Maniquiz.
I will not mention the name of
each and every professor that I
had been with in this University,
but I want you to know that I
am very grateful for all the time
you’ve devoted in sharing your
knowledge and expertise to us.
My dear teachers, you
played a vital role in enriching
our minds and in shaping our
characters. Wherever we may go,
you will always be part of who we
are and we will forever cherish the
moments we had with you. We’re
sorry for the times we made you
feel mad and disappointed with
our behaviours and be assured
that we don’t have anything
against you. We understand
that you just want us to become
responsible, competent, morally
upright, socially responsible and
productive individuals who are
ready to participate actively in
nation building. In behalf of all
the CBA students, I would like
to say thank you so much, we
love you and you will never be
forgotten! We hope that one day,
you’ll be proud that we were once
your students.
And of course, how can I
forget to thank all my friends here
in the University. Thank you for
giving me a space in your heart.
Thank you for making me smile,
laugh, cry and making my stay
in the University never a dull
experience. All the thoughts I have
with you, I will treasure. I love you
and stay happy.
Before I end, let me sing
you a verse of a song which always
inspires and helps me surmount
all the challenges I face in life. This
song is entitled “SMILE”.
“Smile, though your heart is
aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
you’ll get by
That’s the time you must keep on
trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You will see that life is
worthwhile
If you’ll just SMILE.”
Thank you and May God
bless us all.
Cheerio! And till we meet
again.
Those were the inspiring
words from a young lady who is
full of hopes and dreams. Seldom
do we find a person who is as
determined as Ivy. Dreaming is
easy…but doing what it takes to
achieve such dream entails a lot
of patience, valour and fortitude.
We might find ourselves in
various situations that will test
our willpower and strength to
move on. We might meet people
who are not supportive in our
quest for success. But throughout
all these, let us not forget that it is
we who make the choices in our
lives. There may be obstacles,
but rising above them is what
determines our ultimate success.
As Ivy said in her parting song,
SMILE!
