They really had an amazing time. The Middle School Team *********** Rachel Iannacone Thank you for all of your hard work with Advisory. You have really been an invaluable member of our Middle School Team. Keep up the great work. Brady Feutz and Anna Deliyiannis IB Office ^ CAS SERVICE/CREATIVITY PROJECT As it is well known our school has a strong voluntary action on humanitarian and other issues, both through our CAS program, as well as part of our mission and learner profile. Each year students and teachers undertake a variety of voluntary projects aimed at our contribution as active citizens of society. A project that is underway now, in cooperation with the Nicosia Volunteer Center, is to paint a design on the walls outside the Makarios Hospital Children's Physiotherapy Section. Our voluntary work aims to change the exterior walls of the Physiotherapy Section in order for it to become a pleasant place for children who receive daily 5 THE ISLANDER NOVEMBER 18, 2016 treatments at the hospital. A group of our art students with the help of their Art teacher, Mr. Alexis Michaelides have taken on this project. The materials and paints have been donated by Leroy Merlin in partnership with the Nicosia Volunteer Center. ^ Elementary, Middle and High School Counselling Offices From the Middle School and High School Counselling Office: Greetings from the Upper School Counseling Office! I am away this week meeting with universities and other university admissions counselors. See you next week! Ms. Cody Hamilton MS and HS Guidance and University Counsellor Educational Technology ^ iPads in the Elementary Greek Classes The majority of the elementary students live their lives through technology: they are the web generation and they are hungry for more. Our challenge, as educators, is to channel the natural enthusiasm our pupils have for technology by using it in their everyday lives and embed it purposefully into the language classrooms. There is great value in incorporating new technologies in teaching Greek language, not as a reward, but as an integral part of the learning process. This allows learners to foster communication, creativity and innovation, information fluency and critical thinking (ISTE Standards). In the Elementary Greek Language classes, students are using their iPads for enriching and practicing their language skills; students use their interactive native Greek textbooks and/or different language programs e.g. the “Rosetta Stone Language Program” and “Logouergon”. 6 THE ISLANDER NOVEMBER 18, 2016 By using these educational applications (Apps), language learning has become more personalized and independent, where students work at their own pace, complete interactive exercises and receive immediate feedback. In addition, these Apps offer students the opportunity to re‐do the activities which allows them to improve their pronunciation, boost their confidence, and extend their speaking, listening and writing skills. Ms. Maria Charalambous & Ms. Chryso Konstantinou ^ Activities & Service Learning We would like to thank the PE Department for organizing the Annual Cross Country Run at Strovolos Park for all students in Grades 6‐ 10. The event was a success as many students ran their personal best and some students had outstanding times. The top students will be selected to participate in the PanCyprian Cross Country Run being scheduled for December 2nd. Further information will be forthcoming. If you do have questions, please contact Mr. Papapetrou. Private Schools Middle School Boys Futsal Tournament is to begin. The first game is scheduled for Wednesday, November 23rd at 2:00 pm at Strovolos Park futsal courts against the Pascal Greek School. The second game will take place upon our return from the Christmas break. Mr. Brady Feutz has been preparing the students and the team is thrilled to get their first game started. Please contact Mr. Brady Feutz for any questions or clarifications. Please note that the Fall After‐School Activity session will be ending on Wednesday, November 23rd and during the week of November 27‐December 2 no after‐school activities or tutoring will be taking place. There will be no late busses. The winter after‐school session will begin December 5th. After‐school activity forms will be handed out by Wednesday, November 23rd. Service Projects Update: Kindergarten 5 is working hand to hand with Hope for Children. With the help of our Science, International Day, Math and Literacy, we will be making soap. With the proceeds of soap, we will be giving immediate money gained and purchasing usable materials such as soap, deodorant, lotions, etc. for Hope for Children. Grade 1 Service Project for the year ‐ The Right to the Security of a Person Grade 1 is looking into a project that has to do with clothing and warmth with a collection happening during the last week of November or early December. This is still to be confirmed. We would like to collect donations of gently used clothing from each student to give to children in need through the charity of Hope for Children. We will be doing an activity during International Day that pertains to the Children's Right, so the Grade 1 students will be familiar with the idea that some children do not have proper warmth and clothing and that we are able to give in order to help them. The Grade 2 is being active with the Movember project for this year as their service learning project. Movember is a movement that started in Australia and concerns the raise of funds and awareness regarding men’s health. 2nd Grade decided to shift their project’s focus to children’s health, which is a cause students can easier relate to. Money being raised through a series of activities throughout November will be donated to the Makarios Children’s Hospital for children fighting with leukemia. Elementary, Middle, and High School students, as well as teachers, are being encouraged to “vote” for their favorite picture by placing any amount of money inside the box. Any change after lunch time will be appreciated! Participants will not shave the rest of November. Pictures of the progress of the growth of their beard or mustache will be taken by a second grader every Tuesday and will be placed on the boxes in the front entrance hall every Wednesday. Wednesday, November 30th will be the last day to vote. 7 THE ISLANDER NOVEMBER 18, 2016 Grade 3 Service Project – the students with their classroom teacher will begin a toy for tots campaign to help support a children’s organization to be decided by the class. Details on how this will occur will be out soon. ___________________________________________________ New opportunity in Tennis at AISC (private sessions) CARDIO + TENNIS Exciting exercises for parents and students Join us early mornings or Wednesday late afternoons!
