What is Dual-Fuel? Load Management Program - Adams

Adam-Columbia Electric Cooperative’s
Flexible Heat Source Program
What is Dual-Fuel?
With the rising costs of home heating, Adams-Columbia provides many
products that give you the flexibility
for how you heat your home. Thermolec Electric Plenum Heaters allow you
to operate your current gas furnace on
efficient dual-fuel electric or gas. The
choice is yours, depending on which is
most cost-efficient at the time. When
propane exceeds $1.56/gallon*, our low
Duel-Fuel heating rate of 6.1¢ per kWh
is your most economical source of heat.
Sim ple installation of a plenum hea ter on
your existing furnac e allows you to
toggle betw een ele ctricity or gas as your
source of heat — with a flip of a s witch .

Boilers
are
designed to work with in-floor
radiant and hot water baseboard and
radiator heating systems. The boiler will
automatically switch to fossil fuel backup during ACEC’s load management *Calculation based on a 95% efficient gas furnace and zero power cost adjustprogram or it can be switched manually. ment. If your furnace is less efficient, savings will be realized at an even lower per
gallon rate for propane.
Load Management Program
Electric load management is the reduction in the use of electricity through the
direct control of electric loads when Adams-Columbia experiences a peak demand
situation. A load management receiver (LMR) is required on all Duel-Fuel units.
During peak electrical usage, ACEC sends a signal to the LMR to switch off
electricity to the plenum heater in your furnace or electric boiler. This translates to
heat cost savings for you and wholesale power cost savings for all ACEC members.
The load management program looks at the electric load on the system as a whole.
ACEC only reduces electric consumption during peak demand periods, which
can occur Monday through Friday between 8am and 8pm, excluding holidays.
How to Enroll in the Duel-Fuel Program
• Must be a member of ACEC.
• Home must be wired for a second meter to take advantage of the Duel-Fuel heat rates.
• A load management receiver must be installed on the dual-fuel unit by ACEC.
• Products may be purchased and installation done through the heating contractor of your choice.
Electric Heat
Electric Heat is:
• Convenient—electricity is reliable, always available and runs cleaner than fossil fuels.
• Safe—electric units don’t require venting and there’s no flame and no potential for carbon monoxide fumes.
• Efficient— electricity operates at 100% efficiency. Running an LP furnace (with a standard operating LP
efficiency of 85%) on electricity will result in savings for you.

Electric Thermal Storage
Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) heaters are designed to use
low cost, off-peak electricity for heating a specific area or
room. These heaters can be used in new construction applications but are more ideal for retrofitting electric baseboard
heated homes, supplementing an existing heating system,
replacing wood or pellet stoves, heating a new addition or a
cold spot in the home.
During off-peak hours, ETS heaters convert electricity into
heat and store it in specially designed, high-density bricks.
The amount of heat stored in the brick core of the heater is
regulated according to seasonal conditions.
