Here’s a quick and easy fun experiment for those of you who don’t like to wait too long
to see what happens! Try soaking some celery sticks in coloured liquid and see what
happens!...
2 sticks of celery
2 different colours of food colouring
2 glasses of water
1. Have a look at the end of the celery and you will see a whole lot
of dots. These are like the veins that carry blood around your body,
but these veins carry water and nutrients to the leaves of the celery plant when it is in the ground and cause the stems to grow long
and tasty!
2. Pop the celery aside for a
minute and add the food colouring to your glasses of water.
The more colouring you add, the
brighter the liquid will show in
the celery but remember, food
colouring is VERY strong so you will only need a few drops to make
quite bright colours. ** Check with an adult if you’re not sure how
much to use.
3. Once you have made nice colourful water, place one stick of celery in
each glass and leave it in a sunny
space for a few hours.
4. See how long it takes for the dots
at the top of the celery to become
coloured like the water - ours did
not take very long at all, less than
one hour!
Doesn’t the celery look like the candy sticks you get from special sweet shops that are coloured all the
way through! Good enough to eat!! Fun for your next colour themed birthday party!
The veins that carry water up the stem of the celery will draw up the coloured water just the same.
