Daniel High School has one of the most storied and proud sports

Daniel High School
has one of the most
storied and proud
sports programs in SC
history
D W Daniel High School has a long, proud tradition
in sports since its founding it 1955. The blend of the
communities of Central, Clemson and Six Mile has
combined to produce some of the finest athletes and
teams in South Carolina Prep history.
Up until now, Daniel High School has not had a
place to honor those individuals that have made
such success possible. With the completion of the
new school and athletic facilities, it now seems only
fitting that we recognize them with the inception of
the D W Daniel Athletic Hall of Fame.
The D W Daniel Athletic Hall of Fame committee is now accepting nominations for its
inaugural class. In subsequent years, class size will be limited to 5; however, the
inaugural class can have more than that, and HOF Chairman Russ Hebert III expects it to
be well in to the double digits. “If you look at the names from 10 years and back, it is too
hard to count the outstanding athletes and coaches that have made a real impact here at
Daniel.”
Hebert is encouraging all Daniel fans to send in nominations that they feel are worthy of
this high honor. “Daniel is a special school, a special place. Not only does it serve this
community well with its academic excellence, it represents us just as well on the field of
play, and we encourage all fans that have benefited from the past 57 years to tell us who
you would like to recognize forever on the Wall.”
Remember, Once a Lion, Always a Lion.
Russ is a 1984 graduate of DW Daniel. He graduated from Clemson
University with a degree in Business Management in 1989.
After becoming a golf professional at both Harbour Town Golf Links and
Orangeburg Country Club he returned to Clemson to work as a real estate
broker in his family’s business, Re/Max Foothills Realty. Russ is married to
Christy Hebert and they have four daughters: Hunter ( freshman), Mason
(8th grade), Kayce (3rd grade) and Drew(5k). It has been a long time dream
of Russ’s to serve DW Daniel’s alumni and to create a Hall of Fame. He is
happy to finally have this opportunity and is looking forward to contributing to
the great traditions at DW Daniel.

This November marks the 32 year anniversary
of Daniel High School’s first individual state
cross-country title. With no 3A or 4A then,
Daniel’s Becky Calhoun outran every female
athlete in the state. In track, Becky set state
records in the 2-mile (11: 20.5), won the 800
(2:23.6) and placed 1st in the Junior Olympics
regional 1,500m (4:51). While Daniel fielded
cross country teams in the mid 70s, Becky
trained without a team during the 1980
season starting a cross country tradition that
has yielded 4 more Girls State individual titles
(Gammon, 2004; Haughey 2007, 2009, 2010,)
and 5 Girl team titles (1999, 2000, 2005,
2006, 2007). The daughter of Doris, a
Clemson University librarian, and Richard
Calhoun, a distinguished Clemson Professor,
Becky was often trained by her father.
"Becky's running always released pent up
energy and calmed her," says Becky’s
mother, Doris. "She liked the feel of running
and competing.”

Becky’s coaches), at the Daniel 1980-81 awards

A three-sport star at Daniel (lettering in basketball, volleyball and
track), Cheryl is most remembered for her outstanding Basketball
career. As a Lady Lion, Cheryl was a three-year letterman and led
the team in scoring each of her three seasons. When she
graduated, Cheryl held almost every Lady Lion basketball record
there was. After high school, Cheryl went on to a very successful
playing career at Clemson University.

What are you doing now?
I am currently the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Queens
University of Charlotte. I’m going on my 17th overall year of
coaching and my 11th year as a college coach.
Where did you go after High School?
I attended Clemson University as a student-athlete. I majored in
Elementary Education, and after receiving my
degree, stayed on to serve as an assistant coach while getting my
masters in Guidance and Counseling.
What is your favorite sports moment at DWD?
I loved watching/playing the rival games against schools. Anytime
we beat Seneca in any sport was awesome! The week before
football games and the school spirit that led up to the games was
awesome, and we always had good crowds, even on away trips.
What is your fondest memory of DWD?
I loved traveling to games and after the games on the bus, just
having fun with my teammates and those of the boys team. It
seemed like we were all friends and got along so well, which I
remember was the case with most students at Daniel. I remember
when the song Rapper’s Delight came out and one of the guys on
the boys team sang it on the bus and we all jumped in. It’s funny
how the little things stand out, but for some reason that stuck.
Any word of encouragement for current DWD students?
Enjoy every day and value it. Time goes by fast and the friends
that you make will last forever. Be involved and have fun…these
are some of the best years of your life!

spending a lot of time with my wife Jacci and my three yearold son, Jack.
Where did you go after High School?
In 2000-2002 I went to Georgia Military College to continue my
education and to play football. A highlight of my time at GMC
was playing on a Junior College National Championship team
and being named as the Junior College All-American
Placekicker. My successes at GMC led to a full scholarship at
the University of Wisconsin, where I was their starting kicker
for the 2002-2003 seasons, and the opportunity to play in two
College Bowl Games.
What is your favorite sports moment at DWD?
Kicking back-to-back game-winning field goals against BHP to
give our team the opportunity to play in two State
Championships.
Who had the biggest impact on your time at DWD?
My parents for their support and dedication. Russ Hebert for
his training, time and interest in helping me to become a
successful kicker. In addition, Coach Rob, as he was always
there to offer encouragement and support.
Any word of encouragement for current DWD students?
Take advantage of what you have as a high school student.
Stay focused on your dreams and your academics.
If you believe in yourself, have dedication and pride and never quit, you'll be
a winner. The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards.-Paul "Bear"

Q&A With Carly
Interview by Lindy Treglia
Sports history: I started playing t-ball when I was 6 or 7,
rec basketball, softball, volleyball and football all through
elementary. In middle school I started AAU basketball,
club volleyball and travel summer softball. In high school I
played club volleyball and travel softball and started more
serious training and working out. Freshman year, I
played basketball, volleyball and softball including playing
in the state finals for both volleyball and basketball. From
then on, I have focused on volleyball and softball.
Favorite softball player: Michele Smith (played pro softball
as a pitcher for 16 years in Japan) whom I have had the
opportunity to work with.
Most memorable moments in sports: Winning the Little
League World Series in 2008 in Oregon and winning 18year- old gold in Nationals last summer in San Diego.
Most embarrassing moment: I was trying out for the team in
Florida two summers ago. No one my age wears rubber
cleats but I always had, so it was my first time in spikes
and I slipped on the mound and fell face first. I didn’t
even have time to get my hand out of my glove.
Most influential person in your sports and why? My dad., I
would not be a pitcher or anywhere near what I am today
if it weren’t for him. He takes time out of his day every
day and whenever I need him to pitch with me or give me
whatever I need. He is my biggest cheerleader.
Any pre-game superstitions? I always brush my teeth and
put on Chapstick.
Toughest opponent: Orange County Bat Busters. They are
known as the best- hitting team in the country. I was able
to pitch a no- hitter against them, but every batter 1-9 was
a tough battle. It was one of the biggest games of my life!
Things you do offseason: Honestly, I haven’t had an
offseason since club volleyball and club softball are
opposite seasons. What I do work in is, I workout at Top
Notch Training in Anderson with Joe-Don Reames. I also
hit in the softball offseason at Blue Chip Baseball in
Anderson with Seth Brizek.
Tell us about your family: I live at home with my mom and
dad. My sister (Daniel Class of 2010) plays volleyball at
SWU. I have a cat name Snickers and a guinea pig
named, Pepper.
Worst habit: biting my nails
Who would I like to trade places with for a day: no one
Talent I would like to have: I would like to be able to swallow
fire.
(The reporter had to ask why and she responded, “why

Tatum

swimming competitively since moving to
Clemson in the 2nd grade, taking a break
from 7th through 10th grades.

Most memorable moment in sports: Qualifying
for state in competitive cheer my sophomore
year. It was so exciting and such an
accomplishment after losing Addie Hall and
Megan Pilgrim to injury during the
competition.
Most embarrassing moment: Can’t think of any
at the moment.
Most influential person in sports and why? My
swim coach in 5th or 6th grade really
encouraged me to keep at it and gave me the
incentive to keep competing.
Any pre-game superstitions? On the way to the
game, if we go over railroad tracks, we all
have to touch a screw on the bus and lift our
feet off of the floor. (It is consistent with our

On December 1, all sports are coming together to showcase DW Daniel Athletics in two
community parades, followed by a kick-off fundraising event sure be a “hot” tradition!
Beginnning at 10:30 a.m. our teams will be presenting in the Six Mile Holiday parade, and
then at 1:30 p.m. our athletes walk in the City of Central Holiday Parade. The day’s
festivities will close with our first annual all sports chili cook off at 5:00 p.m. in the
cafeteria at Daniel High School. Each Daniel sports team will have the opportunity to
enter a chili-cooking team. After everyone eats, you can cast your ballot (ticket) and vote
for your favorite team. Tickets will be $5 or $15 a family. We will have drinks and desserts
along with a season wrap-up for our fall sports and a kick-off to our winter and spring
sports. Our teams will be selling tickets to this fun event, and the proceeds will go to our
Booster Club All Sports Fund. The winning team will hold the prestigious title for the best
chili in Clemson! Each ticket sold gets you a vote, so please... save the date, buy a ticket,
and get ready to kick off our holiday season with an outrageously fun day!
The fall sports season is winding down, and as it does we would like to thank all of our
seniors for their accomplishments this season. You will be the first graduating class from
our new school, and you have represented us well on and off the field/court/links/course.
Thank you!
Many of our fall sports teams will be moving on to post-season play: the girls golf team
has qualified for state; the boys and girls cross country teams have just won the region;
volleyball should win the region and have home-court advantage during the playoffs; and
with two more wins, the football team will win the region and have home-field advantage
during the playoffs as well. It has been a very successful season.
But it doesn’t end there… basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, soccer, boys golf and
tennis are all still to come, and those sports deserve your support as well. And there is no
better way to support them than by joining the Blue & Gold Athletic Booster Club.
