Historical Background: During the late 17th century England wanted to expand its
empire in the new world. Courageous English colonists were willing to brave an
extremely rough voyage across the Atlantic Ocean for a chance to settle in the New
World. In the Jamestown and Plymouth the colonists faced many challenges at first like
disease, Native American attacks, and starvation. Despite their rough starts each colony
soon grew and thrived in the New World.
