WINNIPEG MAN ARRESTED ON TERROR SUSPICIONS
» MANITOBA SUMMER FAIR
Carvers part of fair’s cultural side
BY ASHLEY ROBINSON
There’s more to the Manitoba
Summer Fair than midway
rides and food — there’s also an
important cultural and arts
aspect to the event.
As part of that, a group of
local carvers is showcasing their
work at this year’s fair.
The Wheat City Carvers
were invited by the Provincial
Exhibition of Manitoba to
display their work in the historic
Dominion Exhibition Display
Building No. II.
Each day two members of
the club sit at their table working
on carvings and explaining how
to do it to anyone who is
interested.
Craig Miller has been a
member of the club since 1997
and has been carving since
1993.
“I took up carving because
it’s something I can do at home
with my family in our living
room,” he said. “I’ve got a piece
of plastic on the floor. I sit in a
chair. I’ve got (my tools). And
I can actually vacuum up the
chips that come off because
they’re not so bad.”
When Miller joined the club,
he found himself enjoying the
social aspect — talking with the
other members and drinking
coffee while working on his
carvings.
The Wheat City Carvers
meet every Tuesday night
between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in
the industrial arts room at
Vincent Massey High School.
Club meetings are held
starting the first Tuesday after
Thanksgiving and run until
mid-April.
There are currently about 25
people in the club, but the
number has fluctuated over the
years. There are men and
women in the club ranging in
age from 14 to around 90.
Miller enjoys carving Santa
Clauses, animals, bark carvings
and
even
soapstone.
Meanwhile, his colleague Ken
Barclay enjoys carving birds,
leaves and wood burning.
Barclay joined the club seven
WINNIPEG — RCMP have arrested a Winnipeg man on the
suspicion that he may carry out terrorist activities or help a
terrorist group.
Aaron Daniel Driver, 23, was arrested after a raid Thursday
in a suburban home. He appeared in court Friday, where police
filed an application for a peace bond that could impose limits on
his activities.
The RCMP have not charged Driver with a criminal offence,
but allege they have grounds to believe he “will participate in or
contribute to, directly or indirectly, the activity of a terrorist group
for the purpose of enhancing the ability of any terrorist group
to facilitate or carry out a terrorist activity.” » The Canadian Press

years ago after he had retired
and was looking for a hobby.
“You can go down and start
carving at nine in the morning
and before you know it, it’s
quarter to 12. So it’s been
good,” he said.
Both Miller and Barclay say
anyone can carve. It doesn’t
matter whether a person knows
anything about the craft
because he or she can always
learn.
“I usually tell people when
they say, ‘I don’t know if I can
do that. I’m not that good,’ that
your first carving is your worst
and your last carving is your
best,” Barclay said.
The club hosts an annual
show and competition in
November at the Western
Manitoba
Centennial
Auditorium. The contest draws
carvers from all over, including
Winnipeg, Regina and North
Dakota, with up to 600
carvings normally entered.
Pat Bowslaugh, a member of
the Provincial Exhibition board
of directors, is happy to have
the carvers at the fair.
“When I think of the time
and the patience and the vision
to take a piece of wood to a
finished product, it just kind of
overwhelms me. So that is a
very favourite corner to look at
those pieces,” she said.
Bowslaugh said the board
wants the fair to appeal to
everyone — not just ride-goers
— by having other exhibits,
such as the carvers, a
photography contest, a local
high school art show and
historical displays.
The displays, including the
carvers, are open daily at the fair
over the weekend.
