The Results Are In! BIG BOWL VOTE RESULTS ARE IN – AMERICA’S YOUTH HAVE VOTED! Contact: Jim Phipps (614) 540-9985 (COLUMBUS, OH) - According to Nielsen, a RECORD 114.5 million viewers tuned in for this year’s Super Bowl, with another 1.3 million watching the game by streaming it on-line. However, individuals, especially youth, tuned in for the commercials as much as they did for the game. Sponsored by Drug Free Action Alliance, The Big Bowl Vote surveyed students and found that middle school students listed the Budweiser “Lost Puppy and Clydesdales” by a substantial margin their favorite commercial over Doritos, “When Pigs Fly” coming in as their second most favorite. High school students were also surveyed mirroring the same results for their favorite commercials. Nearly eight thousand middle and high school students (and counting) representing 25 states responding to the survey, indicated that the most recalled brands were Budweiser and Doritos. Middle school students voted for Doritos as their number one and high school students chose Budweiser as theirs. “The Super Bowl commercials were certainly watched and remembered by youth across the nation. Advertising has a powerful impact on our society and our youth,” said Marcie Seidel, Executive Director of Drug Free Action Alliance. “This survey has consistently shown over many years, that Super Bowl alcohol advertising ranks at a top youth favorite and the brands are easily recalled.” Research shows the negative impact alcohol advertising has on youth. The Center for Alcohol Marketing and Youth from the Bloomberg School of Medicine at John’s Hopkins quoted a national study from 2006 that showed that the greater exposure to alcohol advertising contributed to a rise in underage drinking. According to the Pacific Institute of Research and Evaluation, underage drinking cost society $25.1 billion dollars in 2010 in lost work and medical costs. Also, youth drinking is a key factor in the three most common reasons for death among young people – homicide, suicide and unintentional injury. “Drug Free Action would like to commend Coca-Cola on its ‘Make it Happy’ commercial that ranked in the middle school students top ten favorites. This advertisement gave a positive message to stop cyber-bullying, which is a major issue for many children,” said Drug Free Action Alliance Executive Director, Marcie Seidel. “It was extremely well done.” The Big Bowl Vote is a simple, three-question, student questionnaire given Monday morning following the Super Bowl, where middle and high school students shared their thoughts on what advertisements they remember seeing and which commercial takes their top vote.
