South Decatur Elementary School
“Reaching for the Stars”

Notes from Mr. Layden
We have just completed our first full
week of school and the year has
started off very well. All of the students have received their iPads.
Please take a minute to review the
Acceptable Usage Policy and remind your child of the responsibility
when using the devices.
High Reliability: Our school corporation is dedicated to becoming a
High Reliability School as mapped
out by the Marzaono Research
Group. From time to time parents
will be asked to complete small surveys about our school so that we
can move toward Level 1 certification Safe and Collaborative Schools.
Your input on these surveys is greatly
appreciated and we will share the
findings when we receive them.
Thanks for helping us make the best
school possible,
School Safety: When visiting the
school we ask all parents or volunteers to bring their drivers license so
it can be scanned through our Raptor System. This may be a small inconvenience but it creates a very
safe situation for your students at
school.
New Employee Spotlight: We would like
to welcome Georga Cloud to our SDES
Family. Georga is our new Title 1 Reading Interventionist and will be working
with many students in all grade levels.
She comes to us from NDES where she
served in the same capacity.

PTO Playground Revitalization Fund. All you need to do is sign up and run, walk, or jog through the course
(distances TBD)! Early registration ends Sunday, Aug. 14, but you can still register through the day of the race. The
entry fee is now $20 for kids 12 & Under, and $25 for adults 13 Years & Older, but will go up $5 per entry on Monday. Remember, you can save some money by registering a family of 5 for just $20 each. Registration gets you a My
School Color Run T-shirt, a race bib, a packet of color, and a goody bag. You can register online by visiting
www.southdecaturMSCR.eventbrite.com, or you can send in a registration form with paid entry fee with your student on
Monday. For more info, visit the website, or contact Sariina Kalli at 218-451-1026. Let's get CoLoRfUl, Cougars!
Box Tops: Welcome back to school, Cougars! Last school year, we earned $1,989 for our school from Box Tops, and
that money went into the PTO’s playground fund. This school year, our goal is to earn $3000 just by clipping and sending in Box Tops. Can you help us reach our goals? The first Box Tops for Education Clipping Contest runs through August 31. The classroom with the most Box Tops collected by the deadline will earn an ice cream or pizza party (class choice). One student in grades K-3 and one student
in grades 4-6 will get Family Sports Pass for South Decatur High School, too. For every 25 Box
Tops turned in, students are entered into the drawing to win! I know you’ve been saving up your Box
Tops this summer, so let’s kick of the 2016-2017 school year with a record-breaking Back to School
collection!
SDHS Tailgate Carnival: There will be a tailgate carnival sponsored by the SDHS Adult Booster Club on Friday, August 19th beginning at 5:00pm. There will be food, games, obstacle course, bounce house inflatable and more! The
cost is the admittance to the game!
Notes from the Nurse: If your child is in 6th grade and did not receive their immunizations over the summer, please get that done ASAP. If your child is in Kindergarten and you have not yet turned in their immunization record or birth certificate please turn that in ASAP.
