Year Four Camps: My sincere thanks to the teachers and our parent volunteers for your
commitment and the additional time you gave to attend school camp at Sovereign Hill with our
students. It was a privilege for me to attend the camp with the first group of students. It was a
wonderful educational experience for us all as we had glorious weather and the behaviour of my
groups of students were exemplary. Thankyou Mr Mason and Mrs Long for organising a program that
enabled us to complete many wonderful historical events and activities.

Uniforms: I wish to thank all families for taking heed and following our uniform policy as we move
into winter again. There was a great improvement this week after reminders at assembly that
students are not permitted to wear tights under summer dresses or skorts and that black school track
pants are only to be worn by years 5&6 students on Friday sports day or if students are representing
us in a school team. Keep up the good work and if you need additional items our uniform cupboard
has plenty of stock.

Education Week and School Tours: All school families and prospective 2018 families are welcome to
visit Torquay College this week. Our school is a very happy place to visit and students love sharing
their educational programs. We have excellent classroom displays and wonderful programs for you to
observe.
Don’t forget to come along to our Family Movie Night. This will be a great night and will raise money
for repair and purchase of playground equipment.
Principals Leave: Unfortunately I need to take personal leave for the remainder of the term. I am
confident that Christian Smith will be a great Acting Principal. Please feel welcome to meet with
Christian at any time as I know that he will be more than willing to offer any support or advice that
you may require.

Year 4 Sovereign Hill Camp 2017 by Madison Gavin R1
Last week Year 4 went to Sovereign Hill camp! It was 9:00am, everybody
was excited as we jumped on the bus. On the way there, I was sitting next
to Millie, we had fun. When we got there, there was a big sign that said
Sovereign Hill, it was 10: 30 when we got there we had to take our
luggage down some stairs, lots of people were struggling. There was a
large area with grass, we all had our snack together. I was in Mrs Long’s
group with Tegan, Holly, Xavier, Henry, Harry, Baily and Hamish. First
went to the lolly shop all the lollies looked so good. I bought a horse head
lollypop and some raspberry drops. Then we went to the bakery and we
went gold panning it was fun on the first day I found 14 pieces of gold. We
even went to the gold museum it was so cool, we were allowed to see the
fake “welcome stranger nugget” because it was melted into sovereign
coins. We even saw their costumes, TV’s and radios, and little sovereign
coins they were so tiny they would just fall out of your hands and your
pockets. Then as a whole class, we went to an old fashioned school and
we played a game. We had to find gold and trade it in for money. I was put in to jail before the game even started because we were
not meant to say that we were sailors, but I did. You could go to jail for 1.running 2.pulling faces 3.not having a licence 3.digging in
someone else’s digging spot. All together me, Sienna, Daja and Kyah made 1 hundred and twenty shillings and we all got a licence.
We went to the black smith I bought my sister a horseshoe that said ‘Tali’ on it and I think a couple of author people bought
horseshoes too. At night time, we had dinner we had chicken and veggies. After dinner we watched ‘Blood on the Southern Cross.
First we had to watch this short clip and then then we hopped on a bus and watched it was so cool when the Eureka hotel got
burned down. After that, we got hot chocolate and went to bed. The next day we went gold panning again in total, I found 24
pieces of gold then we got free time. I went with Holly and Teagan, the first thing we did was go to the confectionary shop then we
went up this big tower-Red Hill Mine. After that patted some horses then we went to a shop that had many pretty things in it. Then
we had lunch- we had wraps and sandwiches. Then we had to get all our stuff out of the cabins and all the girls and boys got a room
inspection. My room had Elaine, Sara, Holly and me. All the girls got a full mark we got the
“highest mark yet” Mrs Kinsman said. Then we went on the bus ride home. I loved camp.
