Metro South Region: Brisbane is the capital and most populous city

Metro South Region:
Brisbane is the capital and most populous city in Queensland and the third most populous city in
Australia. Brisbane is also known as the River City and has the self-proclaimed title of Australia's New
World City. Brisbane's metropolitan area has a population of over 2 million, and the South East
Queensland urban conurbation, centred around Brisbane, encompasses a population of more than 3
million.
The Brisbane central business district stands on the original European settlement and is situated
inside a bend of the Brisbane River approximately 23 kilometres from its mouth at Moreton Bay. The
metropolitan area extends in all directions along the floodplain of the Brisbane River valley between
the bay and the Great Dividing Range. Brisbane's metropolitan area sprawls along the Moreton Bay
floodplain from Caboolture in the north to Beenleigh in the south, and across to Ipswich in the south
west.
While the metropolitan area is governed by several municipalities, a large proportion of central
Brisbane is governed by the Brisbane City Council which is Australia's largest Local Government Area
by population. The remainder of the metropolitan area falls into the LGAs of Logan City to the south,
Moreton Bay Region in the northern suburbs, the City of Ipswich to the south west, Redland City to
the south east on the bayside, with a small strip to the far west of the Scenic Rim Region.
Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate (with warm to hot and humid summers and dry, moderately
warm winters. From November to March, thunderstorms are common over Brisbane.
Beyond the boundaries of Brisbane City Council, the South Metropolitan area covers Logan,
Redland, Wynnum, Dunwich and Beaudesert. Logan is a large suburban area located between
Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Established in the late 1970s, Logan has become a dynamic multicultural centre for families and commercial ventures. It is Queensland’s third largest city and enjoys
an ideal central location with a variety of modern industries, small businesses and government
facilities. With 500 parks and the beautiful Logan River, the city offers an ideal family lifestyle with
quick access to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Beaudesert is a substantial rural town located in the
Gold Coast hinterland in south east Queensland. Today, the town is the administrative and
commercial centre of the Beaudesert Shire and services local dairy farmers and cattle graziers.
Strong in community spirit, Beaudesert offers a relaxed and quiet country lifestyle with convenient
access to Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
