Summer Term 1 in EYFS – Princesses and Castles,
Superhero Talents, The magical garden.
Communication and language: During this half term we will be asking and answering
questions to policewomen and firemen about what their job involves and what makes them
‘heroes’ in real life. The children will be extending their vocabulary by exploring the meaning of
new words looking at story language and topic related words.
Physical development: This half term the children will be focusing on effectively forming
letters of the alphabet correctly. During PE lessons the children will be learning to move in
different ways focusing on Superheroes and mini-beast movements. They will develop the
confidence to balance from different heights as well as to climb around, under, over and
through climbing equipment. The children will experience using the wall apparatus to support
and develop their physical skills. They will also begin weekly swimming lessons.
Personal, social and emotional development: The children will be describing themselves
in positive terms and talking about their abilities. This will be linked to the stories and
characters that we will be looking at this half term. We are also learning about how we show
respect and appreciation to our friends and families. We will be talking about behaviour that is
right and wrong focusing on story characters such as Lord Farquhar from Shrek and
Superheroes. The children will learn to understand how to express and show their feelings.
Literacy: This half term we will be enjoying a variety of texts such as Sleeping Beauty,
Rapunzel, The bad tempered ladybird, the crunching caterpillar and Oliver’s vegetables. We will
also be using visual literacy focusing on the story of ‘Shrek’ and ‘SuperTed’. The children will
have the opportunity to write stories, character descriptions, posters, lists and instructions for
honey sandwiches. Every week the children will continue developing their letter formation skills
during a whole class handwriting session. The children will also have daily phonic sessions
throughout this term to support and develop their reading and writing skills.
Mathematics: In Maths the children will be developing their understanding of addition. They
will begin to develop mathematical vocabulary focusing on weight and capacity when we study
the text ‘Shrek’. The children will have opportunities to solve problems involving measurement
such as measuring how many cups of coloured water will fill different sized containers. They
will also practise forming their numbers correctly when they write superhero phone numbers for
Batman. The children will extend their measuring vocabulary when they measure the length
and height of different sized beanstalks. They will learn to understand time using vocabulary
‘before’ and ‘after’ and they will begin to extend their learning by telling the time to the hour
(o’clock).The children will learn to name and describe 2D shapes.
Understanding the world: The children will be learning about what makes them unique and
special referring to ‘Rapunzel’. They will also learn about different occupations and have a
policewoman and firemen visit them to discuss how their job helps others. The children will
plant runner beans and sunflowers. They will learn how to look after a plant and what helps it
to grow. The children will learn about different gardens and environments and understand how
they are different. They will use the computer to draw a magical garden.
Expressive arts and design: The children will learn to mix colours to make a swamp for
Shrek as well as participate in role play and retell a story using a puppet show. They will use a
variety of materials to make superhero capes and to collage a beanstalk. The children will
begin to learn about how to design something before it is made. We will be studying the artist
‘Van Gogh’ and the children will create an observational drawing of a sunflower. As part of our
mini-beast theme we will learn about the artist ‘Matisse’ to create a 2D shape picture of a
snail. The children will make flavoured potions and superhero biscuits for our superhero party.
Summer Term 2 in EYFS – Rumble in the Jungle, Down on the farm,
Beware of the Pirates, Summer Holidays!
Communication and language: This half term the children will be learning a bank of new
words related to animals. They will have the opportunity to use question words that they
would like to find the answers to when they visit the farm as their school trip. The children will
develop their own stories through retelling as well as role play, using a range of vocabulary
and ideas.
Physical development: Throughout this half term the children will be developing the skill of
controlling the size of different alphabet letters. They will learn to control different sized
footballs by learning skills such as catching, throwing and bouncing. The children will move in
different ways imitating the movement of different jungle and farm animals. They will create an
animal dance showing how different animals move and react in different situations. The
children will work as a team to prepare themselves for the sports day activities.
Personal, social and emotional development: The children will enjoy reading different
stories such as ‘greedy zebra’ and ‘lazy Lion’. They will learn different qualities and how to
behave towards family and friends in different situations. We will study the text of ‘The ugly
duckling’ to discuss what makes us happy and how our skills, abilities and personalities are
unique and special.
Literacy: The children will enjoy a variety of texts to support them with writing for different
purposes. We will use visual literacy of ‘The Jungle book’ to write character descriptions and
stories. Other texts will include ‘Dear Zoo’, ‘Rumble in the jungle’ and ‘Walking through the
jungle’. The children will find a baby elephant (teddy) in class which will lead on to creating
posters and letters to the zoo. We will develop the understanding of rhyming and how to
create a rhyming string. The children will use the text of ‘Billy Goats Gruff’ to retell and role
play the story. We will read some non-fiction texts about farm animals and discuss the features
of the text. In preparation for Year One the children will write a recount of their school trip as
a whole class teaching lesson. They will use another visual text ‘Peter Pan’ to describe good
and bad characters as well as to write instructions for their pirate punch party.
Mathematics: In Maths the children will be learning how to solve problems involving
doubling, halving and sharing into groups. We will make individual cakes to show halving.
They will learn to subtract carefully using their fingers and number-lines to support counting
skills. The children will have a money shop in class in order for them to use certain vocabulary
and experience buying and selling food for the farm animals. We carry on developing our shape
skills by naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes. The children will learn to find real-life
objects that are 3D shapes of a cube, cuboid, cone, sphere and a cylinder.
Understanding the world: The children will be comparing their local setting to other
settings. They will begin to describe the similarities and differences between places. They will
learn about ‘floating and sinking’. We will be looking at the season of ‘Summer’ and discussing
the effects of the sun and what things we need when we go on holiday to keep us safe.
Expressive arts and design: This half term will involve dance and experimenting with how to
change and improve parts of their dance routines. The children will learn songs and dances
such as ‘Hey monkey’ and ‘animal boogie’. We will use a variety of materials to create a jungle
scene and a farm setting. The children will design an animal puppet and make it using different
resources. They will invent a new ice-cream and create treasure maps before they go on a
treasure hunt around the school. We will be creating observational drawings and the children
will have the opportunities to make fairy wings and swords for their pirate party at the end of
term.
