Every group or individual must analyze or create a satiric piece. To begin, choose ONE of the following FOUR options: Group Option: 1. In a group of 2-3 members, create a 3-6 minute satirical skit. Choose an appropriate and current topic, event, or person to satirize. Each person must speak and participate. Props and costumes should be used when appropriate. Write a 4-6 paragraph analysis of your satirical skit, or ONE group paper. --OR— Individual Options: 2. Draw a satirical cartoon. Choose an appropriate and current topic, event or person to satirize. Use pencil, marker or art tools or your choice to draw or to create a cartoon. The cartoon must . . . 1. Have color. 2. Fill the sheet of paper. 3. Outline images and words so they are easy to read and to interpret. Write a 4-6 paragraph analysis of your satirical cartoon. 3. Write a piece of satire, such as an essay, speech, script, poem, or story. Choose an appropriate and current topic, event or person to satirize. Write 2-3 paragraphs (or the genre equivalent) using a variety of satirical devices. Write a 4-6 paragraph analysis of your satire. 4. Choose a current piece of satire (speech, skit, essay, song) and analyze for satirical devices. Choose satiric work, event, or portrait that’s appropriate for the classroom and which discusses a current idea or issue. Write 4-6 paragraph analysis of your chosen piece of satire On April 18th . . . Group projects will perform their skit. Individual projects will present their created satire and summary of analysis. Unit 5: Satire Essay Outline Each group or individual will submit a 4-6 ¶analysis essay. Your analysis should include . . . 1. Summary of the piece of satire What topic, event, or person are your satirizing? What is the tone of the satire? Provide background information of the chosen topic, event or person. What devices will you use/ are used to create satire? Provide a thesis statement. Thesis statement: This satire uses (1st satirical device), (2nd satirical device) and (3rd satirical device) to present (chosen topic, event, or person) as flawed or as a flawed element of society. 2. Identify 2-4 satirical devices. Identify 2-4 satirical devices used in the satire. Define each satirical device. Provide an example from the satire as support for each satirical device. Explain how the satirical device operates. Is it an effective piece of satire? Why or why not? Tie the satirical device back to the tone. The 2-4 satirical devices should be discussed in separate paragraphs. 3. Conclusion Restate thesis statement. Describe an audience’s mood or reactions to this satire. Explain how the satire’s tone helped create the mood or reactions Describe its effectiveness. Were the satirical devices used the most effective? Why or why not? Why focus on this topic, event, or person? How might a satire impact the way an audience views or perceives this topic, event, or person? To what end could this satire effect change? 4.
