Celebrating Our Diversity - A Call for Volunteers
The Libraries' Diversity Committee is planning a number of events for the year 2001 to
celebrate our diversity. The purpose of these events will be to inform and celebrate our
unique and rich differences all of which make us strong as an organization. The first
event will be a celebration of Black History Month in February 2001.
In order to plan and prepare for the celebration of Black History Month, the Diversity
Committee is asking for help. Volunteers are needed to serve on a planning committee
that will define a theme as well as activities and displays that will support the theme.
The Thompson Library will dedicate a bulletin board and display case in the foyer and
the EHS Library will also have a display area.
Those interested in serving on this planning committee should email the Diversity
Committee at libkey@lists by Friday, January 5th at 5:00pm. The first meeting will be
the week of January 8. The life span of this committee will only be until the end of
February 2001. Other events will be planned by the Diversity Committee throughout the
year.
Other ideas on how diversity might be celebrated throughout the year should be sent to
libkey@lists at any time.

During this past winter break, those of us who work in the Copy/Supply/OhioLINK
Room and the Library Mailroom have experienced something unknown to us before: a
dearth of student help. Never before in my experience have so few handled so many
books. OSU is OhioLINK's biggest lender, so what goes out eventually comes home,
and home they came. One student, Jeff Holloman, was left to unpack, sort and pack
2,000 books daily.
Jeff Holloman (our official photographer
for NEWS NOTES Online as well)
Mary Parnell and Pam Bivens (Mailroom) pitched in when they could but they, too, had
their own jobs to do.

If we managed to stay abreast of the deluge of books, it was due to the kindness of Tony
Maniaci, head of Circulation, who loaned several students to us at various times. They
were Michelle Thompson, Jeremy Duff, Hillary Wilson, and Allyson Mertzman.

Such willingness to collaborate in order to get the job done demonstrates the high calibre
of students we hire and the admirable level of cooperation that our different units have
been able to establish.
