Having completed her high school at Concordia College in Windhoek, Tegah went on to pursue her Bachelor of Marketing degree at the Polytechnic of Namibia. “My first year of varsity I was enrolled for Human Resources, and later realised my passion was actually in Marketing. I would say the entrepreneurial and creativity thinking in marketing has been instrumental in my decision to change to marketing. I however always aspired to be a lawyer; I just hope it’s not late as I wish that to be my next stop,” she stated. Rachel’s first job was as a marketing assistant at Old Mutual Namibia. From there the post of nbc DTT Commercial Officer: Marketing, Pay TV and Channel Rental was advertised which she then applied for and landed the job. Her duties at the broadcaster include supporting the development and success of the Marketing function of DTT, PAY TV and Channel distribution and channel Rentals. She is also responsible for DTT marketing campaigns and projects within the department and also assisting with the implementation of the department’s policy, strategies and campaigns. Rachel joined the broadcaster in June 2015 and says she enjoys the diverse and multi-skilled people and superb work environment at the sta- tion. She also believes that she joined nbc at the right time when the broadcaster is busy shaping its competitive edge and claiming its spot in the competitive broadcasting sphere. She is also delighted by the fact that nbc is a skills hub. “I really feel fortunate to be part of the dynamic team, and I will use this opportunity to learn more” she states. Rachel enjoys being involved in a task right from strategy formulation, planning to execution and loves to ultimately measure the outcomes of her efforts. She explains her work life. “There is really no typical day for me, it can involve anything from reporting on activities and sales, creating or launching a campaign, arranging print or online advertising, organising events or dealing with supplier invoices. It is extremely varied with very limited daily structure because ad hoc tasks are always called through and due to the type of industry often require immediate attention,” she says. She sees her future at the corporation in a leadership role in the areas of Marketing Management & Strategy or Business Development. The two main objectives of her department are to push for the completion of the national analogue switch off campaign. “We are also working on the nbc DTT Pay TV and Channel distribution strategy and to see how best we can position ourselves against our competitors and lastly increase the revenue by 30%,” she adds. Rachel was born in Oshakati and raised in a village called Oluteyi in the Omusati Region by her aunt. She later moved to Windhoek to pursue her secondary education. Born of parents Fiina yaTshigwedha and Absalom Iipumbu, she has 24 siblings in total. “I grew up like any other girl child in the village doing house chores. I thank my aunt for the fact that she taught me the virtue of hard work and taking school seriously. She was a disciplinarian and we had strict order in our house. I was a tom-boy very calm and collected, playful and naughty!” she remembers. Rachel hails from a business family, and marketing and selling were the order of the day when she was growing up. “Both my late parents were in business and I am glad they taught me the basic means of survival, my passion for marketing became flagged when I was in my second year at Polytechnic. My elder brother had to take care of us, times were tough. I could not ask for pocket money as he just had a lot do so I saved up a few hundreds and bought a sewing machine. I am very talented fashion designer; I started my design and tailoring business. I remember the first weekend I sat and made 15 T-shirts, the next Monday I had sold 9 to my fellow students and the rest were finished within a week. As they say the rest is history; I could contribute to food, buy my cosmetics and even had pocket money” she beams proudly. In her spare time, Rachel enjoys fashion design as aforementioned, adding that when she was young she played with beads by making rings, watches and bracelets. She also delights in reading motivational books and networking as well as playing volleyball. She thrives off people that create their own opportunities and does not believe in waiting for opportunities. “Beg for opportunities and not for money,” she smiles. Her formula for overcoming life’s challenges is doing everything within her power to change what she can but always accept what she cannot change. “I still do not see myself as successful, because I feel am only at the beginning of my race, as it is definitely far from over. My advice will always be, work hard in everything you do, play hard when you have the little time, and never forget to PRAY HARDER,” she adds. “Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try and tomorrow is not guaranteed so make the best of TODAY” nbc BIDS FAREWELL TO OUTGOING DG nbc board Chairman, Mr Sven Thieme, handing over a farewell gift from nbc staff to outgoing Director General, Albertus Aochamub. nbc staff members enjoying themselves at the fairwell party.
