Pathways to the future
Chaplain – Garron
Wednesday 26th April 2017
It was a truly great welcome experience for my
first day as Chaplain at Springhurst Primary
School. After spending some time meeting
many of the children in the morning in the
school yard as they busily played and
continued to build cubby houses and ‘set up
house’ in their various groups. I was so grateful
for the friendly approach and introduction
from many of the students as I was shown the
different cubby house progress.
After the bell was rung, we gathered in the
classroom and Mrs Walker got me to introduce
myself to the school students and tell them a
little about my life and interests, then allowed
some time for questions.
The remainder of the day was filled with
assisting with a variety of activities with the
3,4,5,6 students including estimating length,
width of an area and then calculating the
perimeter and area. This was a great
opportunity to see the different approaches the
student took to carry out the activity and get to
know them a little better.
My first day was a delightful experience and I
look forward to getting to know the students,
staff and all the school community better over
the remaining year to come.
Garron.
Hi Everyone,
Wow! We have only been back for a little over
a week and everything is happening.
Our new Chaplain, Garron, has started; we
have been granted funding for the Respectful
Relationships initiative, which sees Mrs B
working each Friday; we had a very successful
curriculum day organising “I can” statements
for the students.

Kid’s Council News
I was fortunate to attend a Professional
Development Day last Tuesday, called “Play is
the Way”. It is a great program that engages
kids in physically interactive games for the
development of positive social behaviour. The
games support students to be independent,
self-managing, self-motivated learners in
persistent pursuit of their personal best and
able to get along with each other – to help
develop students of strong character and
decency with the social and emotional
competencies to live and learn well. We are
implementing the program for all students
from Foundation to Year 6.
Guess How Many Easter
Eggs???
Our Easter guess the eggs in
the jar raised $54.80. We had
two winners – Violet Hampson and Frank
Harbottle. Both guessed 205 – the actual
number of eggs being 209. Congratulations to
both of you.
Hot Lunches
We will begin our hot lunches on 5th May.
Students are able to order a hot lunch – hot dog
and prima for $3.00. A form will come home
this Friday.
Save the date: We will be hosting the Biggest
Morning Tea on Wednesday May 24th.
Junior Room
How nice it is to hear comments from parents
saying that their children love coming to school
and that their children couldn’t wait for the
holidays to be over!
Because this is a very short week, in spelling
Years one and two will be revising the same
digraphs as last week; ‘oo’ and ‘ea’ but will
select different words unless they need to
revise last week’s list. Foundation will revise ‘j’
and ‘m’ and words containing these sounds. We
are learning about ‘making connections’ with
our own experiences when reading as well as
between texts and in Writing we are practising
how to write a description. Last week the
students were asked to write a description of
their best friend.
In Maths we are currently focusing on
developing our knowledge of numbers that add
up to ten (‘friends of ten’) so that it becomes
automatic and we do this at the beginning of
each maths lesson. It is impressive to see our
Foundation students also beginning to acquire
this knowledge! If you have a deck of cards at
home, get your child to show you how to play
this game, (but remove the picture cards and
the tens first). The students are also learning
about 3D shapes and their properties and
finding these shapes in their surroundings.
In our Science focus the students will learn
about living things.
Senior Room
The students have settled back in to the
routines of the classroom really well.
In spelling this week, we are continuing to look
at the diagraph ‘oo’ and the very tricky trigraph
of ‘que’ which makes the ‘k’ sound. Some very
challenging words such as clique, boutique,
unique etc are proving to be very difficult.
In maths this term, our automatic response
activity is practising our tables. We have a
ladder and the students progress up the ladder
by saying the answer to the tables within one
Hot Lunches
During terms 2 & 3, the students are able
to heat their lunches if they like. We have
an oven for pies etc., a sandwich maker for
toasted sandwiches and a microwave for
the students to use. We discourage the
students from bringing noodles in a cup as
adding the hot water can be very
dangerous.
minute. We begin with the simplest eg. 2s, 10s
& 5s and progress to the more difficult.
In number and algebra, we are looking at
addition and subtraction and in measurement,
we are studying volume and capacity.
We are studying how our government works in
Civics and Citizenship and in Science, we are
looking at living things.
A very busy term!
