HONORS READERS LIST 2016 - 2017
[HR Book Lists can be found at http://www.slcsaustin.org/academics/]
**Please note important changes on pages 3 and 5**
The purpose of the Honors Readers Program at St. Louis School is
to encourage students to develop a love for Reading.
We invite you to reach the reading goal three times a year!
(though all books can be read in the summer)
Have Fun Reading!
Here are a few ways to encourage reading!
For young children and new readers
One of the MOST IMPORTANT ways to help your child to read is to simply build his/her confidence and enthusiasm
with lots of positive encouragement and praise. Keep your focus on your child’s attitude towards reading, rather than
worrying about mistakes he/she makes during reading.
Resist the urge to quiz or question your child too much during a reading session. Stop before your child gets too
frustrated, or offer to read the “hard” words for your child.
When you read to your child, occasionally “sound out” words slowly. Show them that “sounding out” words is one of
the “tricks” in reading that everyone uses. As we get older, we just do this silently.
Struggle with a simple word and let your child help you. “Silly mom, I know that word!”
Read funny books. Use silly voices and add sound effects. Make it fun.
Encourage kids to read signs, cereal boxes, maps, labels, billboards, etc. Show them that reading is not just for
school, but it makes life easier everywhere we go.
Turn OFF the TV. When the TV is on, use closed captioning if you have it.
If your child likes to make up stories, write them down and make it into a small book. Don’t worry about making it look
fancy. Let them read it to a younger sibling.
Keep a cumulative list of spelling words and post it for your child to see. Remind them just how many words they can
read and spell. Praise their efforts every chance you get.
When your child makes a mistake while reading, do not correct him/her immediately. Ignore small mistakes that do
not change meaning in the story. Ask your child if he/she thinks that the sentence makes sense. Give them a chance
to correct the mistake first. Keep silent, be patient, and allow enough time for your child to figure it out.
Post your Honors Readers form in a place where you won’t forget about it. For younger children, you must keep track
and help your child to reach the Honors Readers goal. Avoid trying to read all the books during the last 2 weeks
before the lists are due.
For the older kids
As your child gets older, let them be more responsible for reaching the HR goal.
Don’t always associate reading with homework. The joy of reading should be extended beyond what is “required” for
school.
Read the same book your child is reading. You’ll love reading some of the novels that you read when you were
young. You can talk about the book with your child. It is your own mini book club!
Take your child on a “date” to a neat bookstore one evening instead of the video store to rent a movie.
For everyone
Read yourself. Children learn how important and enjoyable reading can be from you. Show your child that you enjoy
reading too.
Read to your child. Just because your child is already reading, don’t stop reading to them. Pick longer or harder
books and read a chapter at a time. Ask your child to read just a sentence or paragraph per page. Build their
confidence.
Follow your child’s interests. If they like airplanes, find books about planes and pilots.
Visit the library or local bookstores. Listen to books on tape in the car or at home. There are many classic children’s
stories and appropriate novels that are available.
Put reading time into the family schedule. Establish reading time while dinner is being prepared, or just before
bedtime.
Remember the big picture. The Honors Readers program is designed to encourage students to read quality books
and to read often. If your child doesn’t make the goal this time, don’t sweat it. Honors Readers parties happen 3 times
a year. What’s important is that your child learns to value reading.

4th Grade HR List
2016-2017 Changes to Honors Readers:
1. Students may read up one grade level (or two), depending
on their reading abilities. For example, a Second grader
may read from the Third Grade Honors Reader’s list
Appropriate lists can be found at:
http://www.slcsaustin.org/academics/
(Students may read down one grade level, with permission of
the teacher.)
2. Student Choice Books: Half of the books a student reads
MUST come from an Honors Readers list. The other half of
the student’s reading can be books of their choice (as long as
the choice is approved by their teacher). Please put the Listvs. Non-list books in the appropriate places on each
Participation Form.
3. Up through Grade 3, chapter books count extra (see HR
Requirements on page 5 of this handout).
4. The Honors Readers and Reading at St. Louis programs
(RASL) are now combined; parties for HR will take place on
RASL days.

Important information about the
HONORS READERS PROGRAM at St. Louis
Honors Readers Program 2016-2017
Enclosed is the reading list for your child so that he/she may participate in our Honors Readers (HR) Program for this next
school year. The reading list corresponds to the grade your child will enter next Fall. The list is categorized by subject
area to make it easier for your child to select books he/she wants to read. The basis of the Honors Readers program is
that good readers are a product of frequent reading. Therefore, vacation periods provide a perfect opportunity to enhance
reading skills and literature appreciation.
Save this book list, and check off the books that your child reads or that you read to him/her. When you complete a
book, use the HR Participation Form which is attached at the end of this packet to record the following information:
 author,
 title,
 date completed,
 child’s name, grade, and room number,
 your phone number,
 and, YOUR initials or signature at the bottom of the form.
BE SURE TO SIGN THE LIST! Turn these forms in to the school office. DO NOT turn in your book list because you will
need it next time. Replacement lists are available in the school office for $1.00. Now, you can also find the lists on-line at
http://www.slcsaustin.org/academics/. Save this site to your “favorites” folder for easy access throughout the year.
Most of the books on the list are available in the St. Louis School Library, and many can be found at the branch public
libraries. The web sites listed above show the availability of book titles in the area libraries. Now it’s even easier to find
some great books on the Honors Readers list.
You may substitute other books by a listed author, but be sure to screen these supplemental titles for suitability. Some
authors write for a wide variety of reading and interest levels. Just because a third-grader can read a fifth-grade book
doesn’t mean that the content is going to be meaningful or appropriate for him/her. Each grade’s list is designed to
accommodate a wide range of reading abilities. Therefore, there is duplication from one list to the next.
After each major vacation (summer, Christmas, spring break), we will ask you to certify the books completed according to
the guidelines. Students who meet the criteria listed on the next page will receive a certificate, a party, and public
recognition. We want to make the St. Louis Honors Readers famous!
Students who choose not to participate or who do not meet the goals of the first session may still participate in the next
two sessions. Deadlines will be published after school starts. However, a child should begin reading for the next deadline
promptly after each list is due.
HAPPY VACATION READING!
