Midsummer Night’s Dream “The course of true love never did run smooth!” Midsummer Night’s Dream is a magical mystery tour of love and midsummer madness. Spells and potions are used to change the course of people’s lives. This causes plenty of confusion and fun, but not for those involved. Queen of the fairies (Titania) has a page boy she cares for a great deal, but her husband, Oberon, wants the page boy for himself. He is so angry, he casts a spell on the Queen so that she falls in love with the first thing she sees. He says, “What thou seest, when thou dost wake, Do it for thy true-love take;” Puck, the mischievous elf, has also used a potion on a weaver called Bottom which has given him the head of a donkey. Titania is woken up by Bottom singing. In spite of his donkey’s head, she falls in love with him right away and gives him a great deal of attention. She says, “Come, sit thee down upon this flowery bed, While I thy amiable cheeks do coy, And stick musk-roses in thy sleek smooth head, And kiss thy fair large ears, my gentle joy.” At the end, when all the spells have been reversed and everyone comes to their senses, it seems like it has all been a dream.
