GENERAL PRIZES:
THE BILL HOLBROOK MEMORIAL ARTS PRIZES
Given in memory of Bill Holbrook, Class of 1933, by his sister, Jane Holbrook Jewell. Mr. Holbrook was an enthusiastic
theatergoer as well as an accomplished pianist but was most known for his caricatures, most of which are on display here
as part of the Pennock Collection. Prizes are awarded in the following categories: PAINTING AND DRAWING, POTTERY,
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, GRAPHIC DESIGN, VIDEO, THEATER, PHOTOGRAPHY, DANCE, & MUSIC
FRENCH PRIZES:
Awarded for outstanding academic achievement, genuine interest in the language and culture, and continued effort
throughout the year. WILLIAM J. HOLBROOK PRIZE
This prize is awarded in the name of William J. Holbrook, a former trustee of Thayer Academy, banker and lawyer, one of
the founders of the South Shore Hospital and the Church of the Holy Nativity, to a sophomore whose academic achievement
and character is noteworthy and suggest promise for continued growth and success.
EDITH GILES MITCHELL PRIZE
Awarded annually to honor the memory of Edith Giles Mitchell, member of the English Department from 1955 to 1972,
whose professional standards and personal qualities were so deserving of our admiration. This award goes to a sophomore
whose interest and achievement in English and history, as well as loyalty to friends and the school community, exemplify
the values for which Mrs. Mitchell stood.
CLASS OF 1992 COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD
SPANISH PRIZES:
This award is to be given at Last Chapel. It is for a member of the Sophomore Class who has demonstrated a commitment
to maintaining and enhancing the spirit and sense of community at Thayer Academy, through his or her leadership in
all Thayer Academy activities (both on campus and in the community), and through his or her generous, positive, and
energetic presence.
Awarded for outstanding academic achievement, a sincere appreciation of Hispanic culture and sustained daily preparation
and participation.
WARD S. DONNER PRIZE
LATIN PRIZES:
Awarded for superior scholastic performance, motivation and consistent effort and interest.
MANDARIN CHINESE
The recipient of this award has demonstrated sincere motivation and enthusiasm of the Chinese language, and actively
contributed in class participation.
A memorial prize awarded annually at Last Chapel to that sophomore who, in the opinion of the faculty, ably reflects those
qualities of kindness, thoughtfulness for others, intellectual curiosity, athletic interest, good sportsmanship, and fair play
admired in Ward S. Donner - who was for twenty-five years a member of the faculty at Thayer Academy and in succession:
teacher, coach, Director of Physical Education, Dean of Students, Acting Headmaster and Dean of Faculty.
THE RICHARD R. DOWNEY, JR. MEMORIAL PRIZE
FOR EXCELLENCE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE:
This award is presented annually to the graduating student who has demonstrated excellence in foreign languages as well
as tolerance, sensitivity and fair-mindedness in character.
MATHEMATICS PRIZES
Presented to a member of each of the undergraduate classes who, in the opinion of the members of the Mathematics Dept.
has displayed outstanding accomplishment in mathematics, who has made a contribution to his or her math class, and who
has a special interest in the field.
FRESHMAN SCIENCE AWARD
To a freshman who has demonstrated high academic achievement in Physics.
BIOLOGY PRIZE
Presented to a student for outstanding achievement in the study of Biology.
CHARLES A. PITKIN CHEMISTRY PRIZE
For excellence in the study of chemistry as demonstrated by academic achievement, interest and high scientific aptitude.
This is given in memory of Charles A. Pitkin, first Science teacher at Thayer Academy, 1877-1916.
RENSSELAER MEDAL
Awarded to a junior for outstanding achievement in mathematics and science and who has made the potential for success
in a science-related career. The recipient is given the opportunity to compete for special scholarship awards at Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute.
THE W. LAWRENCE CAHALL, JR. PRIZE SCHOLARSHIP
FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE STUDY OF SCIENCE
This scholarship, in recognition of Dr. W. L. Cahall, Thayer biology teacher from 1962 to 1968, is awarded to a sophomore
who has completed courses in physics and advanced biology, and who demonstrates excellent aptitude, achievement,
and commitment to science.

SOPHOMORE PRIZES:
NANCY DINATALE TAYLOR PRIZE
A memorial awarded annually at Last Chapel to that sophomore girl who, in the opinion of the faculty, has demonstrated
outstanding achievement in athletics and those human qualities of sound character, leadership, and friendliness that were
so apparent in Nancy, a graduate in the Class of 1960.
THOMAS J. BERRY III PRIZE
A memorial awarded annually at Last Chapel to that sophomore who, in the opinion of the faculty, demonstrates those
qualities of serious scholarship, athletic participation, and most important, camaraderie so evident in Tom Berry, a
graduate in the Class of 1978. The recipient has clearly demonstrated a desire to assist his classmates and/or teammates to
improve themselves.
WILLIAM C. GOULD, JR. PRIZE
This scholarship is awarded to a junior for excellence in the study of science and for the demonstration of enthusiasm,
curiosity and creativity in the pursuit of scientific achievement.
THE NAOMI R. AND SAUL B. COHEN SCIENCE AWARD
This award is given on the basis of merit in science studies to a member of the sophomore or junior class in recognition of
superior achievement.
WILLIAM J. HOLBROOK AMERICAN HISTORY PRIZE
This prize is awarded in the name of William J. Holbrook, former President of the Massachusetts Society of the Sons of the
American Revolution and a former trustee of Thayer Academy, to that underclassman who has demonstrated the greatest
improvement in the study of American History.
UNITED STATES HISTORY PRIZE
This memorial is awarded to that sophomore who exhibits outstanding personal and leadership qualities with achievement
in athletics and the arts.
Given to that student who has shown the greatest achievement in the study of U.S. History.
COLIN F. MACDONALD III PRIZE
Given annually in memory of Merton L. Emerson, Trustee of Thayer Academy from 1920 to 1945 and former President of the
Board of Trustees, for an essay in the field of American History.
Colin F. MacDonald III, a graduate in the Class of 1976, was a Thayer student with exceptional athletic ability and personal
qualities rare in one so young. His desire for self-improvement, his steadiness, perseverance, humility and kindness were
conspicuous and remarkable. He was a model for all who knew him. This prize is given to keep his memory of goodness
always with us.
MAUREEN E. BUCKEN PRIZE
Given each year at Last Chapel to a sophomore selected by the faculty, this award recognizes those qualities of good
humor, contribution to athletics, and sound character so evident in Maureen, a graduate in the Class of 1973.
LEO R. FLYNN PRIZE
This prize is awarded in memory of Leo R. Flynn to a sophomore who has exhibited those qualities of diligence, hard work,
and perseverance admired by so many in Leo Flynn.
NICHOLAS AND ROSE PAPANI PRIZE
MERTON L. EMERSON ESSAY
SPECIAL HISTORIAN AWARD
Given to that student who showed outstanding scholarship, promise and enthusiasm in the field of history; for outstanding
work in Modern European History.
ROLAND STANLEY COOPER MEMORIAL PRIZE FOR HISTORY
Given by Marvin Cooper in memory of his son, a Thayer student who showed outstanding promise and interest in the field
of history, for outstanding work in World History.
MOST IMPROVED FRESHMAN ENGLISH STUDENTS
For students who have shown great improvement during the year, this prize is awarded to freshmen, who through
perseverance and willingness to accept criticism, have made important growth in adjusting to the demands of a college
preparatory English course.
This prize is to keep alive the memory of Nicholas and Rose Papani to whom Thayer Academy meant a great deal and who
considered music to be a part of the fruit of life, to be enjoyed by everyone. It is a memorial prize to be awarded each year
at Last Chapel to the sophomore who demonstrates unusual musical talent and who has worked diligently to develop that
talent. Given in the following categories: INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC, VOCAL MUSIC.
To a sophomore who has exhibited outstanding short story writing ability. THOMAS J. GERAGHTY PRIZE
To a junior who has exhibited outstanding essay writing ability. Given annually to a sophomore boy or girl, preferably from the City of Boston whose continued perseverance in a wide range
of activities and thoughtful consideration for others reflect the ideals of Thomas J. Geraghty.
THE MATTHEW CALLAHAN HEALEY ’09 MEMORIAL PRIZE
FRANK E. REMICK PRIZE
This prize is awarded each year at Last Chapel to honor the memory of Frank E. Remick, Class of 1927 and Trustee from 1947
to 1974. Frank was a man among men, admired most for his clear-headedness, good taste, loyalty, and sensitivity. The prize
is awarded to a sophomore whose achievement in studies and interest in the arts and athletics are significant.
ADA HELEN GILBERT CLAFF PRIZE
Given in loving memory by her husband Warren Leonard Claff and her daughters Linda Claff Bailit and Ellen Claff Wolfe,
this memorial prize is awarded annually at Last Chapel to that sophomore girl, who, in the opinion of the faculty, most truly
reflects those qualities of warmth, generosity, friendliness, and love of human kind, admired in Ada Gilbert Claff, throughout
her life.

THE JUNIOR ENGLISH ESSAYIST AWARD
Given in memory of Matthew Callahan Healey ‘09 to a student in the Senior Class who has exhibited the qualities that made
Matt so special: an inclusive and unparalleled spirit, true exuberance for life, the ability to find happiness and humor in the
simplest of things, and great love for his family and the Thayer community.
THAYER ACADEMY PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
The Thayer Academy Parents’ Association Community Service Awards are awarded to members of the Senior Class who have
demonstrated outstanding involvement and exceptional dedication to community service.
THE REUBEN AND LIZZIE GROSSMAN AWARDS
In recognition of outstanding leadership, excellence of character, scholastic achievement and service to school and
community.

THE PATRICK C. WALSH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
THE SAINT ANSELM BOOK AWARD
The Patrick C. Walsh Memorial Scholarship Award is awarded to that member of the senior class who has demonstrated
Patrick’s qualities of camaraderie, positive attitude towards all, respect of others, and the ability to surmount difficulties
with good spirit.
The Saint Anselm Book Award is presented to a junior who is an outstanding student. The recipient exercises a capacity for
academic achievement and continued education, has an awareness of social responsibility, displays leadership qualities,
and possesses strong character.
THE PATRICE DONOVAN COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
THE SAINT LAWRENCE BOOK AWARD
This award was established in 1989 by the Class of 1986 in honor of their classmate, Patrice Donovan, to be awarded
each year at Last Chapel to an underclassman who, like Patrice, has exhibited outstanding dedication, sensitivity and
determination in serving those in need.
This award is given to a junior student who displays a significant commitment to both scholarship and community service.
THE SAINT MICHAEL’S COLLEGE BOOK AWARD
THE JULIAN H. CHERUBINI PRIZE FOR SCHOLASTIC EXCELLENCE
The recipient of this award is a junior in the top 20% of his or her class who has demonstrated a sustained and sincere
commitment to community service activities either at school or within the local community.
This prize is awarded each spring at Last Chapel to a boy or girl in grades 9 - 11 chosen by the upper school faculty solely
on the basis of academic excellence, with no regard to financial need.
THE SOUTH SHORE SMITH CLUB’S BOOK AWARD
THE CHERUBINI PRIZE FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ARTS
This award is presented in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and leadership.
Given by Barbara and Julian Cherubini ’53, this prize is given annually at Last Chapel to two members of the junior class
who have demonstrated exceptional ability, interest, and achievement - one in the visual arts, and one in the performing
arts.
THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER GEORGE EASTMAN YOUNG LEADERS AWARD
FERNAND LaCHANCE AWARD
THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER FREDERICK DOUGLASS And SUSAN B. ANTHONY AWARD
This award is given in memory of Fernand LaChance, member of the Thayer faculty from 1975-2008. The award is given
to a junior or senior student who has demonstrated intellectual curiosity in both the sciences and the humanities, and
whose good humor, interest in world cultures, and creative passion for discovery reflect the qualities so admired in Mr.
LaChance.
The recipient of this Award must be a junior who has shown a demonstrated commitment to understanding and addressing
difficult social issues, leadership and dedication to the community, and has achieved strong grades in rigorous courses.
This award is presented to a junior who has high grades in challenging courses, has shown strong leadership at school and
in their community, and has extensive involvement in extracurricular activities.
THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER BAUSCH & LOMB HONORARY SCIENCE AWARD
This Award is presented to a junior with high achievement and rigor in science classes and high PSAT or SAT math scores.
THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER XEROX AWARD
FOR INNOVATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
BOOK PRIZES:
The recipient of this Award is a junior with a strong interest in innovation and/or information technology and a high level of
achievement in this area in coursework and outside of school. The selected student must seek exposure to new technologies
outside of school, as well as lead other students to new approaches to old problems.
THE BROWN BOOK AWARD
THE WELLESLEY COLLEGE BOOK AWARD
The Brown Book Award, established by the Associated Alumni of Brown University, is to be given annually to a junior who
best combines “a high degree of ability in English, both written and spoken, with outstanding personal qualities.”
Provided by the Wellesley College Alumnae of Boston, this award is to honor a female student in the junior class whose
academic record and character are exceptional, and who has also made significant contributions to her school and/or
community.
THE COLUMBIA COLLEGE BOOK AWARD
The recipient of this award has demonstrated strong scholarship in all subjects and a strong involvement in activities
whether in school or in the community.
THE DARTMOUTH COLLEGE BOOK AWARD
THE YALE BOOK AWARD
Each spring, the Yale Club of Boston presents its book award to juniors in area high schools, who in the opinion of their
faculty demonstrate outstanding personal character and intellectual promise.
The Dartmouth College Book award is given in memory of General Sylvanus Thayer, Dartmouth 1807, to a student in the top
10% of the Junior Class. He or she has attained an outstanding combined academic average in three college preparatory
subjects, two of which include mathematics and English. Above all, the selected student has demonstrated outstanding
leadership in a highly visible school sponsored activity and/or service to the community.
THE HARVARD BOOK CLUB PRIZE
The prize book of the associated Harvard Clubs is awarded to a member of the junior class to a young man or woman who
exemplifies excellence in scholarship and high character combined with achievement in other fields.
THE HOLY CROSS BOOK PRIZE
This prize goes to a junior with outstanding scholarship and personal qualities; a sincere concern for others and responsible
attitude in all endeavors.
