Plot Synopsis
Shrek is an ogre. An ugly, smelly but happy ogre. He lives in a swamp in the land
of the fairytale creatures. The kingdom is ruled by Lord Farquaad, a short and nasty
prince, who makes up for his lack of size by building. And building and building and
building!
When Lord Farquaad sends orders to build houses on Shrek’s swamp, Shrek is furious.
With the help of Pinniochio, Puss in Boots, Donkey and the rest of his fairytale friends,
Shrek fights to defend his home. Will he get his swamp back and live happily ever
after? Or will it become just another part of Lord Farquaad’s concrete jungle?

Total physical response:Find your partner and your opposite.
Give every two students a personality eg. Stupid, intelligent, sad or happy. Make sure
no-one knows anyone else’s personality. Then ask the students to walk around the
room in character, meeting other people and trying to find their partner. Then repeat
the exercise with opposites; instead of their partner, students must find their opposite.
Charades
Put several of the character words in a hat, plus some ideas of your own. One by one
the students come to the front of the class, pick a word from the hat and act out the
word. For example, if the word is ‘sad’ they might cry, if it is ‘short’ they might crouch
down or look upwards to show how small they are. The rest of the class must try to
guess the word. Whoever guesses correctly is the next to act, but in order for your
guess to be accepted you must say it in a complete sentence eg. She is short.
You can also play this game dividing the class into two teams. Each team has a
representative who picks a word from the character hat. The representative has thirty
seconds to act out the word and for their team to guess it. If they don’t guess in thirty
seconds, the other team has a chance to guess. For every correct guess there is 1
point, and if the other team guess they earn 2 points. Write the scores on the
blackboard, and see which team is first to get to 10!

Here are some of our adjectives (describing words) with their comparative and
superlative:
Big/Bigger/Biggest
Little/Littler/Littlest
Stupid/Stupider/Stupidest
Greedy/Greedier/Greediest
Happy/Happier/Happiest
Sad/Sadder/Saddest
Ugly/Uglier/Ugliest
Friendly/Friendlier/Friendliest
Smelly/Smellier/Smelliest
Total Physical Response: Moving adjectives
For this exercise it would be ideal to work in the gymnasium, or to clear the desks in
your classroom to one side.
Start with the students walking normally around the room. Once everyone is moving,
call out and adjective, eg tall. The students must walk as they imagine a tall person
to walk. Then call out the comparative, taller, and they must walk even taller, then the
superlative, and they must walk as tall as they possibly can. Then repeat this exercise
with other adjectives. This is a great warm-up and concentration game!
Adjectimobiles
For this project you will need A4 paper or card, lolly sticks and string.
Ask your students to choose their favourite adjective from the word list. Next, choose
a character from the story and an adjective which could go with that character. For
example, your character could be Lord Farquaard and your adjective could be sad.
Now draw three pictures of Lord Farquaad, representing him as sad, sadder and
saddest. In the first picture, he could have a sad face, in the second, he could be
crying and in the third, he could have a pool of tears all around him! Now cut out your
three pictures and glue or tie them together on a length of string, with the adjective
(sad) at the bottom, the comparative (sadder) in the middle and the superlative (saddest)
at the top. Tie the top of your string to a lolly stick and suspend from the classroom
ceiling to create a three-tiered illustration of your favourite adjective!

Lord Farquaad Says!
Eat
Fight
Sing
Dance
Build
Sleep
Stand up
Sit down
Turn around
Hop
Jump
Silence!
This is a variation on the popular children´s game ´Simon Says´, and can be
played either in the classroom, or for a more energetic version,
in the gymnasium. Stand at the front of the class and take on the role of Lord
Farquaad. Lord Farquaad is horrible and must be obeyed! Using the
vocabulary above, plus and movement vocabulary your students may
know already, give commands to the class. Every command must be
preceded by ´Lord Farquaad says´. For example, if the command is ´Lord
Farquaad says dance´, the students must dance.
If, however, you give a command without saying ´Lord Farquaad says´ first,
the children should not obey it, and should continue with their previous
activity. Begin giving commands slowly, then increase your speed to see if
you can catch your students out! To make the game more lively you could
introduce set actions to go with each word, and do the actions along
with your students.
Mine and Yours
The plot of the storytelling session focuses on Shrek´s fight to defend his
swamp, therefore it is important that your students understand the concepts
of ´mine´ and ´yours´, and can express possession in English. This is
a great little exercise for learning possessives and also for practising
vocabulary.
Collect together a bag of everyday and classroom objects which your students
are familiar with the names of, such a pen, keys, a book etc. Ask the
class to line up in front of you. The first child in line must pull and object out of
the bag and pronounce it his own, saying, for example, ´it is my
book.´ He then gives the book to the second student in line and adresses
him, saying ´it is your book.´ He then takes the book back from the second
student and gives it to you, the teacher, telling the second student ´it is his
book´. You return the book to the bag. The child has now finished
his turn and goes to the back of the queue, whilst you offer the bag
of objects to the next student in line.

Drama-action game
One student stands at the front of the class and becomes Pinnochio! He or she must
point to an object or person and say its´ name (in English, of course!). Ideas for
objects could be common classroom items such as pencil, ruler, teacher, door, window
etc… This continues until a false name is given, for example the student may point
to a table and say ´window´. The rest of the class must then shout ´Liar!´. The first
person to have shouted ´liar´ correctly then becomes Pinnochio. If no-one has noticed
the lie before Pinnochio names his next object, he may keep on playing!

The Building Song
Welcome to my kingdom,
The empire of Camelot.
We’re not very clever,
But we build a lot;
Houses and chalets,
Skyscrapers, apartment blocks,
Hotels and mansions,
Supermarkets and parking lots…
I build and build, I’m a builder!
I build and build, so cool!
I build and build, if you need me
Come on by, give me a call.
Tall, strong, dark and mean:
My houses are so just like me!
I build and build.
My speed is just frightening:
I’m the king of the concrete clan!
I erect things like lightening
C’mon baby, yeah, I’m your man,
Houses and chalets…
I build and build…
Get Off My Swamp!
I like to sit in my swamp alone,
It’s the only place I can call home,
I pick my nose and I scratch my bum:
I’m an ogre! What fun!
Get off my swamp!
Get off my swamp!
Get off my swamp, get off my swamp,
Get off my swamp!
I’m afraid this swamp is not for sale
It’s the best swamp in this fairy tale
And I’ll defend it, tooth and nail:
I’m an ogre! We – hey!
Get off my swamp…
