May 23-24 PENTECOST-wear red to Mass! 25 Memorial Day-Office Closed June A Letter From Our Pastor Dear Friends, The month of May is here - and of course that means Mothers Day, First Communion, Confirmation, graduation, Memorial Day and wedding celebrations. It means gifts, cards, food and the gathering of friends and family celebrating milestones and next steps in life. I have found that these transitions are a mix of emotions for me. There is a sense of accomplishment and excitement as another chapter in life is begun and there is a twinge of sadness knowing that a phase of our life has come to a close. As the Church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost and the Easter Season comes to a close, I imagine the Apostles must have had a mix of emotions as well. Soon the resurrected Jesus will no longer be with them and they will have to assume the role of evangelizers, teachers and servants in challenging times. Aided by the gift of the Holy Spirit, they will preach, teach and serve in the name of Christ and of His Church and inspire all Christians to do the same – for this is the life of Stewardship. In our modern day, we continue to live in challenging times and we continue to be challenged to live the life of Stewardship. And with every transition and change that comes along, it is important that we remember to use our time, talent and treasure in the service and love of God and in the service and love of neighbor in such a way as to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us. Therefore it is vital that we: • evangelize as messengers of the Good News of God’s love and mercy to all • teach the truths of the Catholic faith and form others through wise counsel and good example • serve others by reaching out to them in kindness, generosity, forgiveness and good will What a blessing that here at St. Patrick we are doing our best to live the life of Stewardship, that we continue to learn more about our faith and that we make it a point to welcome and serve others in our parish and community. In this beautiful month of May, join with me in invoking the Holy Spirit as we live the life of Stewardship so that by our evangelizing, teaching and serving we may know in our parish and personal lives the fruits of the Holy Spirit which are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. God bless you all! To Jesus through Mary, I remain, Sincerely Yours, Fr. This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. According to Blessed Pope Paul VI in his encyclical on the Month of May, “The month of May is the month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady, and it is the occasion for a moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pay to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration.” Later on in the encyclical, he states, “We are delighted and consoled by this pious custom associated with the month of May, which pays honor to the Blessed Virgin and brings such rich benefits to the Christian people. Since Mary is rightly to be regarded as the way by which we are led to Christ, the person who encounters Mary cannot help but encounter Christ likewise. For what other reason do we continually turn to Mary except to seek the Christ in her arms, to seek our Savior in her, through her, and with her?” (excerpted from Pope Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May) Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Canticle of Mary The “Canticle of Mary” or “Magnificat” is taken from the Gospel according to Luke 1:46-55. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Pope Francis to Visit the U.S. “We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.” said Pope Francis Many of us await in eager anticipation of Pope Francis’ visit to the United States in September of this year. It is a chance many of us wouldn’t get-the chance to see our Pope for the 8th World Meeting of Families, and it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The World Meeting of Families is a weeklong event that takes place every three years. The first World Meeting of Families was created by John Paul II in 1994, and the most recent Meeting took place in Milan, Italy in 2012. Reportedly, millions of people are expected to gather in Philadelphia for this Meeting. The theme will be, “Love Is Our Mission: the Family Fully Alive.” This theme is to teach people how to receive and give love. They spread 280 bags of mulch, planted flowers and swept the entire parking lot. Thanks for your stewardship of time! The Easter Season At St. Patricks Easter Vigil Palm Sunday At the “Weave the Word” Coffee, Donuts and Registration, parishioners were invited to stop by the social hall after Mass to learn how to “weave” their palm branches into different shapes while enjoying coffee, donuts and big pretzels. The Welcome Committee was available to register new members. “WE WERE THERE,” a dramatic Way of the Cross, was presented on Sunday, March 8th. The Assembly was entranced as parish members, acting as characters present at the Crucifixion, presented dramatic monologues about how the events that day changed their lives. This year the families of the Elementary Youth Group attended, in addition to people of all ages. The Choir led everyone in verses of “Were You There” accompanied by string instruments. Prior to the service, hungry guests enjoyed a Soup Supper featuring their choice of 7 homemade soups along with a variety of breads, crackers, cookies and bars. Make plans to attend this moving service in Lent of 2016. The list of characters for this season were: Fr. Rite Of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) The Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation takes place during the Easter Vigil Liturgy on Holy Saturday when the catechumen receives the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The seven gifts are; Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, and Wonder. These gifts help us to respond to the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, to make good choices, and to serve God and others. Wisdom is the gift of knowing the right choices to make to live a holy life. The gift of wisdom helps you to avoid the things that could lead you away from God. Understanding is the gift of comprehension, or the ability to grasp the meaning of the teachings of the Church. The gift of understanding helps you be tolerant and sympathetic of others. It helps you sense when someone is hurting or in need of compassion. Right Judgment or Counsel, is the gift of prudence. The gift of right judgment helps you make choices to live as a faithful follower of Jesus. Courage or Fortitude, is the gift that helps you stand up for your faith in Christ. The gift of courage helps you overcome any obstacles that would keep you from practicing your faith. Knowledge is the gift of knowing and enlightenment. The gift of knowledge enables you to choose the right path that will lead you to God. It encourages you to avoid obstacles that will keep you from him. Reverence or Piety, is the gift of confidence in God. This gift of reverence inspires you to joyfully want to serve God and others. Wonder and Awe or Fear of the Lord, is the gift of wonder and respect that encourages you to be in awe of God. The gift of wonder and awe moves you to so love God that you do not want to offend him by your words or actions. With the understanding of the gifts available from the Holy Spirit, we pray that you may recognize the gifts you have been given and apply them to your daily lives. One way to utilize these gifts is in sharing your time and talents with St. Patrick parish. We are currently searching for leaders and/or volunteers for the ministries of the Evangelization & Stewardship Commission and even the smallest gesture is appreciated. The ministries include the quarterly Newsletter, the Annual Stewardship Renewal/Ministry Fair, and the Welcome Committee. We ask that you prayerfully consider sharing your time and talents with the Evangelization and Stewardship Commission at St. Pat’s. If you would like more information or are interested in assisting our group, please contact Sarah Sheeley-Commission Chair, at [email protected] or call 309-737-7774. Thank you for your consideration and continued support of our wonderful parish! They put out 2,217 filled plastic eggs as well as handing out a few more at the other two Masses. The eggs were donated by many parishioners and we had some help from some great bunny volunteers. Thanks to all who helped with their stewardship for this event to be a success. 4 Elementary Youth Group finished up the year with a Bowling Party and invited 2nd graders to their last meeting. I have been blessed to be part of Elementary Youth group for three years, which means I’ve been honored to watch some of these children grow in their faith for the last three years. I will miss all the 6th graders next Fall as they move on to Junior High. ~ Heather Feller, Elementary Youth Group Leader St. Patrick NAMI Walk Team Six St. Patrick members walked three miles in the cold, wind and rain April 25th at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area in Iowa City during the National Alliance On Mental Illness’ annual “NAMI Walk.” Money raised for the event helps Johnson and Linn County individuals and families battling serious mental illness.
