Though both women are pretty, Bianca is more desirable because of her pleasing personality and gentler demeanor with men. Katherine, being the oldest and seeing the obvious favoritism her younger sister receives, has become full of spite and anger scaring away anyone who might want to marry her. Baptista. Baptista says as long as you can win her love, she is yours to marry. So, Petruchio’s courting of Kate begins…and it is a rocky one. Petruchio is young, arrogant, and extremely wealthy and feels that he would be a match for any woman he wanted. He makes a plea for Katherine’s hand and proposes a dowry for her to loyalty and a respect for each other’s wishes. Everyone is quite surprised at her change and the three couples at the end go off to celebrate each other’s marriages. After, “winning” her love, the two get married and move to Petruchio’s house. Here we see the madness of Petruchio escalate with the treatment of his servants. All the while he is attempting to bend Kate to conform to his will through lack of sleep, very little food, and teasing of fineries. The Three of Bianca’s suitors, Hortensio, Gremio and couple make their way back to Baptista’s house, Lucentio, come calling for Bianca’s hand, but are because Lucentio has won the love of Bianca and informed that until Kate marries, Bianca will not a wedding date is set. be allowed to marry. After re-reading Shakespeare’s story of Taming of the Shrew, I was struck with the tone and misogyny that the play almost promoted towards women. I was very skeptical on the relevancy of the story and struggled with how I might present it in a way that would stay true to the spirit of the play, while keeping it fresh and upbeat for a modern audience. After many discussions with my theater friends, I came to realize the empowerment of the story. It is not a story about a stubborn woman being “tamed”, but a love story about two stubborn people discovering the ability to compromise and ultimately work together to develop their relationship. I choose to take a path of commedia dell’arte with a mixture of absurdity and farce in my directing of this piece. My hope is that the lightheartedness and emotional intensity would help create a roller coaster ride for the audience that is enjoyable on all fronts. Thank you for supporting our endeavor here in Mountain House and I hope you thoroughly enjoy the production.
