Geomatics Trivia:
1. What is the highest
point of elevation in Nova
Scotia, and where?
2. No point in NS is more
than how many kilometres (km) from the ocean?

We are on the Web!
Introducing the Nova Scotia Geodatabase v2.1
LGS Inc has been working
within Nova Scotia for almost 10 years now, and
consequently we have
worked with the majority
of the available provincial
datasets in one form or
another.
Last year, we decided to
change how we look at
local GIS data by creating
the Nova Scotia GeoDatabase for ESRI applications.
This is due to the fact that
there are many GIS web
viewers out there such as
ArcGIS Online, Google,
Bing, OpenLayers, etc…
but they all seem to generalize the data they use,
instead of using specialized local data which is
useful for large scale and/
or sector specific GIS
analysis.
Through the NS GeoDatabase, LGS Inc is looking to
solve this problem. We
To build the NS GeoDatabase, thousands of shape
files were collected,
clipped, merged and assembled into a single file
geodatabase. We also
added extensive zoom
scaling and label rendering
to give users a print and
web-publication ready
map source.
The database is most useful for organizations within
NS that need GIS data to
manage their provincewide assets. However,
organizations outside of
the province can also use
the database for various
analyses and map production, for example, in sectors such as transportation, natural resources,
and renewable energy.
To continue this trend of
providing specialized local
data, we are currently finishing similar databases
for the provinces of New
Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. We envision
having local data in a
desktop-GIS and webapplication ready environment for all of our clients.

Tech Note - The Benefit of Open Source: A Look at Quantum GIS
It is often difficult to convince an organization to
migrate from proprietary
GIS software to Open
Source (OSS), when they
have become familiar with
and invested in the former.
www.gissolutions.ca
www.geomapix.com
specifically targeted freely
available and fully accessible province-wide datasets, and compiled them
into one comprehensive
package. The sources for
the GeoDatabase include:
GeoNova (main source),
Access Nova Scotia, GeoBase, GeoGratis, and the
NS Department of Natural
Resources.
After dabbling with the
OSS, Quantum GIS
(QGIS), I have come to
realize that most of the
desktop GIS functionality
needed for the average
user is all there. And it’s
free of cost!
Not only is the same functionality available, QGIS
allows users to import and
export data in a variety of
formats, including .shp,
making it extremely interoperable with other purchased GIS software.
Moreover, QGIS has a
Plugin Manager, that allows you to load/unload
many user-written tools
from a variety of libraries,
to increase functionality.
