ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Our twenty-fourth year was a collection of outstanding performances at the tent, vibrant shows on tour and exciting programs over the airwaves on Tent Show Radio. It is amazing how year after year Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua can continue to dazzle audiences on every level. The credit goes to our outstanding staff and volunteers, our wonderful and versatile Blue Canvas Orchestra, our dedicated Board of Directors and our ever generous contributors. We thank you for buying tickets, sponsoring shows and donating what you can to keep this organization strong. Highlights of the year were new shows performed by the Blue Canvas Orchestra which included Laurel Canyon 1970, Blue Canvas Christmas and Bally Hoo Haw, and the celebration of the 25th anniversary of our signature show Riding the Wind. Big Top Idol brought outstanding talent from throughout the Bay to rock the tent, personally one of my favorite nights of all time. The variety of new national artists that performed from the Avett Brothers to Great Big Sea to Los Lonely Boys were fabulous crowd pleasers and showcased how Big Top can build new audiences for all ages. A great new partnership was formed with Stage North to provide opportunities for the Blue Canvas Orchestra to perform off season, and to share artistic talent for Big Top’s variety shows. We look forward to this relationship continuing for years to come. My message of gratitude is very heartfelt, to all of you, your support of Big Top Chautauqua is truly marvelous. So many people make this organization successful, we appreciate you, we need you and because of you we are looking forward to our 25th year of magical entertainment. Our Board of Directors is truly dedicated to the success of Big Top Chautauqua. We recognize the financial challenges of this year and we are striving to find increased funding sources so that the Big Top can grow a more stable financial base. I want to thank the board for their commitment to this organization and its future. Another year passes and we reflect on Big Top’s contribution to the entertainment scene of Chequamegon Bay. We want to continue to be a strong partner in bringing people to the region, to providing outstanding shows for our residents, and supporting new talent as they launch their entertainment careers. We look forward to 2011, as a year of celebration and thanks. Please review this annual report and know that only because of you can we keep the “MAGIC” alive. Nearly 530,000 people; over $100 million! During the past two and a half decades over half a million people have attended Big Top performances, many of them tourists and visitors to the area. The indirect benefit of these visitors to the lodging, restaurants, retail stores, gas stations and other industries has been estimated by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism at well over $3.9 million annually. Publicity efforts promoting the region cost Big Top Chautauqua over $100,000 annually. This rivals or exceeds the promotional budgets of many chambers of commerce and significantly promotes regional tourism. Our weekly Tent Show Radio program is heard on 54 radio stations in ten states and introduces hundreds of new visitors to the area. The show is provided free of charge to noncommercial radio stations. Production and distribution of Tent Show Radio is paid for by Big Top Chautauqua and its Tent Show Radio sponsors. Direct financial support for Mt. Ashwabay is generated by Big Top patrons enjoying the food and bar concessions operated by the Ashwabay Outdoor Education Foundation. Dozens of other organizations are assisted by donations of tickets and merchandise to help them achieve their charitable goals in the community. At least $1 million per year in direct expenses go back into our immediate community for salaries, taxes, transportation, advertising, telecommunications and all the other things necessary to operate a nonprofit performing arts organization. The local artists supported by Big Top help make this one of the most diverse and productive artistic communities in the state. 4 MISSION STATEMENT Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua exists to provide year-round cultural activities that are both entertaining and educational with emphasis on excellent performances that celebrate history and the environment. 2010 BTC STAFF & CREW LSBTC Administrative Staff Summer Tent Staff Executive Director Terry Meyer Matier Operations Manager Phillip Anich Marketing Manager Jamey Penney-Ritter Development Manager Lee Ann Schaub Box Office Manager/Volunteer Coordinator Marlyce Miller Production Manager Tom Fabjance Bookkeeper William Woodward Summer Box Office Assistants Maria Hintze Linda Nemec Christina Vick Stephen Miley Hannah Rennicke Assistant Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Moore Arts Administration Intern Stephen Miley Visuals Director Betty Ferris Stage Manager Kyra Berkness Lighting Director Rebecca Franklin Stage Hand Alan Seppa Sound T&E Concert Services Travis Johnson Scott Pike Stage Manager Assistant Zach Boylston House Manager Lew Miller Performer Hospitality Marcia Trelstad Artist Assistant Kaas Baichtal Merchandise Manager Pam Nylander Housekeeper Linda Eschke Blue Canvas Orchestra & Performers Music Director/Cello/Vocals Ed Willett Piano/Accordion/Vocals Severin Behnen Bass Cal Aultman Fiddle/Flute/Vocals Bruce Bowers Mandolin/Banjo/Vocals Bruce Burnside Bass/Vocals Jack Gunderson Percussion/Vocals Tom Mitchell Guitar/Dobro Andy Dee BCO Vocals/Performers Phillip Anich and Cheryl Leah Other Performers Corey Carlson, Sally Kessler, Liz Woodworth, Randy Sabien, Mary Bondeson, Mary Lou Williams, Noah Siegler, Michael Perry, Don Albrecht, Gerry DePerry, Heather Tucker, Brooke Melek, Jeremy Oswald, Jeff Eckels, John Munson. 2010 YEAR ROUND STAFF Terry Meyer Matier Executive Director Phillip Anich Operations Manager Jamey Penney-Ritter Lee Ann Merrill Schaub Marketing Manager Development Manager 5 Marlyce Miller Tom Fabjance Box Office Manager & Volunteer Coordinator Production Manager 2010 SEASON SCHEDULE June 11 Yonder Mountain String Band 12 Fundraiser: Chautauqua Uncorked! The event concluded with performances by Red Cliff Drum, Scooter “Laughing Fox” Charette, Frank Montano and the multi-award-winning Native American recording group Brulé & AIRO. Big Top was pleased to receive support from the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Human Rights Fund of the Apostle Islands Area Community Fund, an affiliate of the Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation and the Isle Vista Casino of Red Cliff for Native American Cultural Connections. CHRISTMAS IN JULY APRIL FOOLS DAY PRANK BY CLAIRE DUQUETTE ASHLAND DAILY PRESS July 23, 2010 BY MEG JONES MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL April 14, 2010 It was a joke. It was April 1 - as in April Fool’s Day. And, really, did anyone think the huge tent of the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua actually would be turned into the world’s biggest hat? And a Stormy Kromer hat to boot? When the press release was sent out by social media as well to local news outlets by Big Top Chautauqua marketing director Jamey Ritter a Gina Thoreson of Stormy Kromer few days before April 1, it was displays the first Special Edition tongue in cheek. Phrases such as: Kromer to come off the line. Kromer Canvas Canopy, two icons of Lake Superior's southern shore joining forces, naming rights to Bayfield County’s canvas jewel, Guinness Book of Records, etc. There was even a picture, manipulated in Photoshop, showing the tent with a 40-foot-long hat brim. It was fun, it was goofy, it wasn’t real. But quite a few people wanted one. “We have people who are Stormy Kromer fans, and we have people who are Big Top fans, and then there are those who overlap. They say this is the best thing ever,” said Ritter. 160 of the Special Edition Kromers were ordered. It’s a hot Wednesday afternoon in July, and five Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua Blue Canvas Singers are sitting around a table in the basement of Big Top’s Washburn office building smoothing out harmonies to a gospel-style “Joy to the World.” On Sunday, concert-goers will be treated to “Blue Canvas Christmas in July,” a collection of songs and skits designed to bring seasonal favorites WPR’s John Munson performing a to the stage — the season just reading of Charles Dickens’ happens to be one usually associated “A Christmas Carol.” with December. Blue Canvas band director Ed Willet said Big Top has talked about a Christmas show for years, but finally decided this was the year to make it a reality. So the musicians began researching some favorite holiday songs, and they recruited actor Liz Woodworth and John Munson of Wisconsin Public Radio as contributors. “We wanted the show to be really engaging, so we did a lot of research to find tunes we could get behind and suited our style,” he said. Often, they discovered their own favorite singers and songwriters had performed holiday songs, and found inspiration there. WATCH FOR A BCO CHRISTMAS CD IN 2011! Ashwabay each summer. Individuals and families from near and far contribute their time, energy and talents to the growth and success of our programs. Our volunteers work with the Big Top staff from our office and on show nights as ticket sellers, ushers, parking guides and sellers of Big Top and guest artist merchandise. Our dedicated volunteers contribute well over 6,000 hours of their time annually. Raising our blue and gray tent every May is another major volunteer effort. We could not do it without them! Because ticket sales cover just over half of Chautauqua’s total operating costs, Big Top needs to raise nearly half of its revenues from other sources. Your annual generosity in contributing to our fundraising campaign is the only way the shows can continue - be a Big Top stakeholder! WAYS TO GIVE ANNUAL FUND DRIVES VOLUNTEERING Our spring, fall and year-end fund drives provide operating support for our immediate expenses. All $100+ donors are enrolled in our Advanced Donor Notification Program, which gives donors advanced notice and pre-sales ticket buying capabilities for summer programs. Gifts of all sizes are needed and appreciated. Gifts of time are extremely valuable to Big Top as volunteers are crucial to the success of each summer season and the year-round planning. New friends are always welcome - look to our website on how you can lend a few hours or more! SPECIAL EVENTS MAJOR GIFT Donors who are able to make a major donation to the Big Top help provide stability and growth opportunities to our organization. Sometimes the gifts are unrestricted operating funds, and other times, they are needed to launch and sustain special projects and programs. Special fundraising events provide a fun way to be involved while helping Big Top Chautauqua. The “Chautauqua Uncorked” wine tasting event helped raise $2,500 in new money last year. Some years we have gala dinners, boat trips, and the ever popular “Parties of Note” hosted by volunteers in our community. Join in the fun and contribute to Big Top at the same time! SPONSORSHIPS RAFFLE TICKETS Show sponsorships are an excellent marketing vehicle for your business and a way to be personally involved with putting on one of our stellar performances. Sponsors underwrite production and promotion expenses associated with a particular show at the tent, on tour or on Tent Show Radio. In turn, Big Top Chautauqua provides a number of promotional vehicles designed to bring your organization’s name to our audiences. But they’re not just for businesses - they’re also a fun way for individuals to support their favorite artists or celebrate a special occasion while helping the Big Top at the same time. Originally the “Keepers of the Magic” launched our annual raffle which contributes upwards of $15,000 to Big Top every year for operations. In addition, the Keepers started an endowment fund held by the Duluth Superior Community Foundation - the interest from which will lay the foundation for future tent replacements. The fund currently holds approximately $50,000. HERITAGE SOCIETY PLANNED GIFTS Leave your legacy of support for Big Top Chautauqua after you’re gone. The Heritage Society recognizes those individuals who make provisions in their estate for Big Top. Featuring Big Top’s Tom Mitchell, the Blue Canvas Orchestra, and nationally and regionally renowned performers, Tent Show Radio is heard every week on listenersupported radio stations across the country, and the world on the Internet. Each week features a different live performance from Big Top Chautauqua’s summer season of concerts and musical productions. Tune in to Tent Show Radio and bring Big Top Chautauqua into your home. If your local listener-supported radio station does not carry Tent Show Radio, contact their program director. Big Top Chautauqua is always seeking additional stations to join the list of broadcasters. Tent Show Radio was made possible in 2010 in part by the generous support of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and Leinenkugel’s.
